disastrous time。 No Scottish chronicler gives the least of exact date to their

famed victory of Loncarty察 only that it was achieved by Kenneth III。察

which will mean some time between A。D。 975 and 994察and察by the order

they put it in察 probably soon after A。D。 975察 or the beginning of this

Kenneth's reign。 Buchanan's narrative察 carefully distilled from all the

ancient Scottish sources察 is of admirable quality for style and otherwise

quiet察 brief察 with perfect clearness察 perfect credibility even察 except that

hanging to the tail of it察the grain of possible truth in which can now never

be extracted by man's art。6А In brief察 what we know is察 fragments of

ancient human bones and armor have occasionally been ploughed up in

this locality察proof positive of ancient fighting here察and the fight fell out

not long after Hakon's beating of the Jomsburgers at the Cape of Stad。 And

in such dim glimmer of wavering twilight察the question whether these of

Loncarty were refitted Jomsburgers or not察must be left hanging。 Loncarty

is now the biggest bleach´field in Queen Victoria's dominions察no village

or hamlet there察only the huge bleaching´house and a beautiful field察some

six or seven miles northwest of Perth察bordered by the beautiful Tay river

on the one side察 and by its beautiful tributary Almond on the other察 a

Loncarty fitted either for bleaching linen察or for a bit of fair duel between

nations察in those simple times。

Whether our refitted Jomsburgers had the least thing to do with it is

only matter of fancy察but if it were they who here again got a good beating察

fancy would be glad to find herself fact。 The old piratical kings of

Denmark had been at the founding of Jomsburg察 and to Svein of the

Forked Beard it was still vitally important察but not so to the great Knut察or

any king that followed察all of whom had better business than mere thieving察

and it was Magnus the Good察 of Norway察 a man of still higher anti´

anarchic qualities察that annihilated it察about a century later。

Hakon Jarl察 his chief labors in the world being over察 is said to have

become very dissolute in his elder days察especially in the matter of women察

the wretched old fool察led away by idleness and fulness of bread察which to

all of us are well said to be the parents of mischief。 Having absolute power察

he got into the habit of openly plundering men's pretty daughters and

wives from them察and察after a few weeks察sending them back察greatly to

the rage of the fierce Norse heart察had there been any means of resisting or

revenging。 It did察 after a little while察 prove the ruin and destruction of

Hakon the Rich察 as he was then called。 It opened the door察 namely察 for

entry of Olaf Tryggveson upon the scenea very much grander man察in

regard to whom the wiles and traps of Hakon proved to be a recipe察not on

Tryggveson察 but on the wily Hakon himself察 as shall now be seen

straightway。

                             CHAPTER VI。

                                OLAF TRYGGVESON。

Hakon察in late times察had heard of a famous stirring person察victorious

in various lands and seas察latterly united in sea´robbery with Svein察Prince

Royal of Denmark察 afterwards King Svein of the Double´beard ─_Zvae

Skiaeg_;察 _Twa Shag_ or fork´beard察 both of whom had already done

transcendent feats in the viking way during this copartnery。 The fame of

Svein察and this stirring personage察whose name was ;Ole察─and察recently察

their stupendous feats in plunder of England察siege of London察and other

wonders and splendors of viking glory and success察had gone over all the

North察awakening the attention of Hakon and everybody there。 The name

of ;Ole; was enigmatic察 mysterious察 and even dangerous´looking to

Hakon Jarl察 who at length sent out a confidential spy to investigate this

;Ole察─ a feat which the confidential spy did completely accomplishby

no means to Hakon's profit The mysterious ;Ole; proved to be no other

than Olaf察 son of Tryggve察 destined to blow Hakon Jarl suddenly into

destruction察and become famous among the heroes of the Norse world。

Of Olaf Tryggveson one always hopes there might察one day察some real

outline of a biography be written察fished from the abysses where as usual

it welters deep in foul neighborhood for the present。 Farther on we intend

a few words more upon the matter。 But in this place all that concerns us in

it limits itself to the two following facts first察that Hakon's confidential spy

;found Ole in Dublin察─picked acquaintance with him察got him to confess

that he was actually Olaf察son of Tryggve the Tryggve察whom Blood´axe's

fierce widow and her sons had murdered察got him gradually to own that

perhaps an expedition into Norway might have its chances察and finally that察

under such a wise and loyal guidance as his the confidential spy's察whose

friendship for Tryggveson was so indubitable察 he Tryggveson would

actually try it upon Hakon Jarl察the dissolute old scoundrel。 Fact second is察

that about the time they two set sail from Dublin on their Norway

expedition察Hakon Jarl removed to Trondhjem察then called Lade察intending

to pass some months there。

Now just about the time when Tryggveson察spy察and party had landed

in Norway察 and were advancing upon Lade察 with what support from the

public could be got察dissolute old Hakon Jarl had heard of one Gudrun察a

Bonder's wife察 unparalleled in beauty察 who was called in those parts察

;Sunbeam of the Grove; so inexpressibly lovely察and sent off a couple of

thralls to bring her to him。 ;Never察─ answered Gudrun察 never察─ her

indignant husband察 in a tone dangerous and displeasing to these Court

thralls察who had to leave rapidly察but threatened to return in better strength

before long。 Whereupon察instantly察the indignant Bonder and his Sunbeam

of the Grove sent out their war´arrow察rousing all the country into angry

promptitude察and more than one perhaps into greedy hope of revenge for

their own injuries。 The rest of Hakon's history now rushes on with extreme

rapidity。

Sunbeam of the Grove察 when next demanded of her Bonder察 has the

whole neighborhood assembled in arms round her察rumor of Tryggveson is

fast making it the whole country。 Hakon's insolent messengers are cut in

pieces察 Hakon finds he cannot fly under cover too soon。 With a single

slave he flies that same nightbut whitherward拭 Can think of no safe

place察 except to some old mistress of his察 who lives retired in that

neighborhood察and has some pity or regard for the wicked old Hakon。 Old

mistress does receive him察 pities him察 will do all she can to protect and

hide
