;By this time you will fully understand察 sir察─ he said察 that what

troubles me so dreadfully is the question察What does the spectre mean拭─

I was not sure察I told him察that I did fully understand。

;What is its warning against拭─ he said察 ruminating察 with his eyes on

the fire察 and only by times turning them on me。 ;What is the danger拭

Where is the danger拭There is danger overhanging somewhere on the Line。

Some dreadful calamity will happen。 It is not to be doubted this third time察

after what has gone before。 But surely this is a cruel haunting of me。 What

can I do拭─

He pulled out his handkerchief察and wiped the drops from his heated

forehead。

;If I telegraph Danger察on either side of me察or on both察I can give no

reason for it察─he went on察wiping the palms of his hands。 ;I should get

into trouble察and do no good。 They would think I was mad。 This is the way

would displace me。 What else could they do拭─

His pain of mind was most pitiable to see。 It was the mental torture of

a conscientious man察 oppressed beyond endurance by an unintelligible

responsibility involving life。

;When it first stood under the Danger´light察─he went on察putting his

dark hair back from his head察and drawing his hands outward across and

across his temples in an extremity of feverish distress察 why not tell me

where that accident was to happenif it must happen拭Why not tell me

how it could be avertedif it could have been averted拭 When on its

second coming it hid its face察why not tell me察instead察'She is going to die。

Let them keep her at home'拭If it came察on those two occasions察only to

show me that its warnings were true察and so to prepare me for the third察

why not warn me plainly now拭And I察Lord help me A mere poor signal´

man on this solitary station Why not go to somebody with credit to be

believed察and power to act拭─

When I saw him in this state察I saw that for the poor man's sake察 as

well as for the public safety察what I had to do for the time was to compose

his mind。 Therefore察 setting aside all question of reality or unreality

between us察I represented to him that whoever thoroughly discharged his

duty must do well察and that at least it was his comfort that he understood

his duty察though he did not understand these confounding Appearances。 In

this effort I succeeded far better than in the attempt to reason him out of

his conviction。 He became calm察the occupations incidental to his post as

the night advanced began to make larger demands on his attention此and I

left him at two in the morning。 I had offered to stay through the night察but

he would not hear of it。

That I more than once looked back at the red light as I ascended the

pathway察that I did not like the red light察and that I should have slept but

poorly if my bed had been under it察I see no reason to conceal。 Nor did I

like the two sequences of the accident and the dead girl。 I see no reason to

conceal that either。

But what ran most in my thoughts was the consideration how ought I

to act察 having become the recipient of this disclosure拭 I had proved the

man to be intelligent察vigilant察painstaking察and exact察but how long might

he remain so察in his state of mind拭Though in a subordinate position察still

he held a most important trust察and would I for instance like to stake my

own life on the chances of his continuing to execute it with precision拭

Unable to overcome a feeling that there would be something

treacherous in my communicating what he had told me to his superiors in

the Company察 without first being plain with himself and proposing a

middle course to him察 I ultimately resolved to offer to accompany him

otherwise keeping his secret for the present to the wisest medical

practitioner we could hear of in those parts察 and to take his opinion。 A

change in his time of duty would come round next night察he had apprised

me察and he would be off an hour or two after sunrise察and on again soon

after sunset。 I had appointed to return accordingly。

Next evening was a lovely evening察and I walked out early to enjoy it。

The sun was not yet quite down when I traversed the field´path near the

top of the deep cutting。 I would extend my walk for an hour察 I said to

myself察half an hour on and half an hour back察and it would then be time to

go to my signal´man's box。

Before pursuing my stroll察 I stepped to the brink察 and mechanically

looked down察 from the point from which I had first seen him。 I cannot

describe the thrill that seized upon me察 when察 close at the mouth of the

tunnel察I saw the appearance of a man察with his left sleeve across his eyes察

passionately waving his right arm。

The nameless horror that oppressed me passed in a moment察for in a

moment I saw that this appearance of a man was a man indeed察and that

there was a little group of other men察standing at a short distance察to whom

he seemed to be rehearsing the gesture he made。 The Danger´light was not

yet lighted。 Against its shaft察a little low hut察entirely new to me察had been

made of some wooden supports and tarpaulin。 It looked no bigger than a

bed。

With an irresistible sense that something was wrongwith a flashing

self´reproachful fear that fatal mischief had come of my leaving the man

                                              13

there察and causing no one to be sent to overlook or correct what he didI

descended the notched path with all the speed I could make。

;What is the matter拭─I asked the men。

     ;Signal´man killed this morning察sir。;

;Not the man belonging to that box拭─

     ;Yes察sir。;

     ;Not the man I know拭─

;You will recognise him察 sir察 if you knew him察─ said the man who

spoke for the others察 solemnly uncovering his own head察 and raising an

end of the tarpaulin察 for his face is quite composed。;

;O察how did this happen察how did this happen拭─I asked察turning from

one to another as the hut closed in again。

;He was cut down by an engine察 sir。 No man in England knew his

work better。 But somehow he was not clear of the outer rail。 It was just at

broad day。 He had struck the light察and had the lamp in his hand。 As the

engine came out of the tunnel察his back was towards her察and she cut him

down。 That man drove her察and was showing how it happened。 Show the

gentleman察Tom。;

The man察 who wore a rough dark dress察 stepped back to his former

place at the mouth of the tunnel。

;Coming round the curve in the tunnel察sir察─he said察 I saw him at the

end察like as if I saw him down a perspective´glass。 There was no time to

check speed察and I knew him to be very careful。 As he didn't seem to take

heed of the whistle察I shut it off when we were running down upon him察

and called to him as loud as I could call。;

     ;What did you say拭─

     ;I said察
