it ─ After that察she wrings her hands again察passes the bedside察and goes
out at the door。 We hurry on our dressing´gown察seize our pistols we
always travel with pistols察 and are following察 when we find the door
locked。 We turn the key察 look out into the dark gallery察 no one there。
We wander away察and try to find our servant。 Can't be done。 We pace the
gallery till daybreak察then return to our deserted room察fall asleep察and are
awakened by our servant nothing ever haunts him and the shining sun。
Well we make a wretched breakfast察 and all the company say we look
queer。 After breakfast察we go over the house with our host察and then we

take him to the portrait of the cavalier in green察and then it all comes out。
He was false to a young housekeeper once attached to that family察 and
famous for her beauty察who drowned herself in a pond察and whose body
was discovered察after a long time察because the stags refused to drink of the
water。 Since which察it has been whispered that she traverses the house at
midnight but goes especially to that room where the cavalier in green was
wont to sleep察trying the old locks with the rusty keys。 Well we tell our
host of what we have seen察and a shade comes over his features察and he
begs it may be hushed up察and so it is。 But察it's all true察and we said so察
before we died we are dead now to many responsible people。
There is no end to the old houses察 with resounding galleries察 and
dismal state´bedchambers察 and haunted wings shut up for many years察
through which we may ramble察with an agreeable creeping up our back察
and encounter any number of ghosts察but it is worthy of remark perhaps
reducible to a very few general types and classes察 for察 ghosts have little
originality察and ;walk; in a beaten track。 Thus察it comes to pass察that a
certain room in a certain old hall察where a certain bad lord察baronet察knight察
or gentleman察shot himself察has certain planks in the floor from which the
blood WILL NOT be taken out。 You may scrape and scrape察 as the
present owner has done察or plane and plane察as his father did察or scrub and
scrub察as his grandfather did察or burn and burn with strong acids察 as his
great´ grandfather did察but察there the blood will still beno redder and no
palerno more and no lessalways just the same。 Thus察in such another
house there is a haunted door察that never will keep open察or another door
that never will keep shut察 or a haunted sound of a spinning´wheel察 or a
hammer察or a footstep察or a cry察or a sigh察or a horse's tramp察or the rattling
of a chain。 Or else察there is a turret´clock察which察at the midnight hour察
strikes thirteen when the head of the family is going to die察or a shadowy察
immovable black carriage which at such a time is always seen by
somebody察 waiting near the great gates in the stable´yard。 Or thus察 it
came to pass how Lady Mary went to pay a visit at a large wild house in
the Scottish Highlands察and察being fatigued with her long journey察retired
to bed early察 and innocently said察 next morning察 at the breakfast´table察
;How odd察to have so late a party last night察in this remote place察and not

to tell me of it察before I went to bed ─Then察every one asked Lady Mary
what she meant拭 Then察 Lady Mary replied察 Why察 all night long察 the
carriages were driving round and round the terrace察 underneath my
window ─ Then察the owner of the house turned pale察and so did his Lady察
and Charles Macdoodle of Macdoodle signed to Lady Mary to say no
more察and every one was silent。 After breakfast察Charles Macdoodle told
Lady Mary that it was a tradition in the family that those rumbling
carriages on the terrace betokened death。 And so it proved察 for察 two
months afterwards察the Lady of the mansion died。 And Lady Mary察who
was a Maid of Honour at Court察 often told this story to the old Queen
Charlotte察 by this token that the old King always said察 Eh察 eh拭 What察
what拭 Ghosts察ghosts拭 No such thing察no such thing ─ And never left
off saying so察until he went to bed。
Or察 a friend of somebody's whom most of us know察 when he was a
young man at college察 had a particular friend察 with whom he made the
compact that察if it were possible for the Spirit to return to this earth after
its separation from the body察 he of the twain who first died察 should
reappear to the other。 In course of time察this compact was forgotten by
our friend察 the two young men having progressed in life察 and taken
diverging paths that were wide asunder。 But察 one night察 many years
afterwards察our friend being in the North of England察and staying for the
night in an inn察on the Yorkshire Moors察happened to look out of bed察and
there察in the moonlight察leaning on a bureau near the window察steadfastly
regarding him察 saw his old college friend The appearance being
solemnly addressed察replied察in a kind of whisper察but very audibly察 Do
not come near me。 I am dead。 I am here to redeem my promise。 I
come from another world察 but may not disclose its secrets ─ Then察the
whole form becoming paler察 melted察 as it were察 into the moonlight察 and
faded away。
Or察 there was the daughter of the first occupier of the picturesque
Elizabethan house察 so famous in our neighbourhood。 You have heard
about her拭 No Why察SHE went out one summer evening at twilight察
when she was a beautiful girl察 just seventeen years of age察 to gather
flowers in the garden察and presently came running察terrified察into the hall

to her father察saying察 Oh察dear father察I have met myself ─ He took her
in his arms察and told her it was fancy察but she said察 Oh no I met myself
in the broad walk察and I was pale and gathering withered flowers察and I
turned my head察 and held them up ─ And察 that night察 she died察 and a
picture of her story was begun察though never finished察and they say it is
somewhere in the house to this day察with its face to the wall。
Or察the uncle of my brother's wife was riding home on horseback察one
mellow evening at sunset察when察in a green lane close to his own house察he
saw a man standing before him察 in the very centre of a narrow way。
;Why does that man in the cloak stand there ─ he thought。 ;Does he
want me to ride over him拭─ But the figure never moved。 He felt a
strange sensation at seeing it so still察 but slackened his trot and rode
forward。 When he was so close to it察as almost to
