his elbow察and leaned his head upon his hand察heart´broken with toil and
hunger察 and gave himself up to death。 But brave Ancaios the helmsman
cheered up their hearts once more察and bade them leap on land察and haul
the ship with ropes and rollers for many a weary day察whether over land察
or mud察 or ice察 I know not察 for the song is mixed and broken like a
dream。 And it says next察 how they came to the rich nation of the
famous long´lived men察and to the coast of the Cimmerians察who never
saw the sun察 buried deep in the glens of the snow mountains察 and to
the fair land of Hermione察where dwelt the most righteous of all nations察
and to the gates of the world below察and to the dwelling´place of dreams。
And at last Ancaios shouted察'Endure a little while察brave friends察the
worst is surely past察 for I can see the pure west wind ruffle the water察
and hear the roar of ocean on the sands。 So raise up the mast察and set
the sail察and face what comes like men。'
Then out spoke the magic bough察'Ah察would that I had perished long
ago察and been whelmed by the dread blue rocks察 beneath the fierce swell
of the Euxine Better so察than to wander for ever察disgraced by the guilt
of my princes察for the blood of Absyrtus still tracks me察and woe follows
hard upon woe。 And now some dark horror will clutch me察if I come
near the Isle of Ierne。 7 Unless you will cling to the land察 and sail
southward and southward for ever察I shall wander beyond the Atlantic察to
the ocean which has no shore。'
Then they blest the magic bough察 and sailed southward along the
land。 But ere they could pass Ierne察the land of mists and storms察the
wild wind came down察 dark and roaring察 and caught the sail察 and
strained the ropes。 And away they drove twelve nights察 on the wide
wild western sea察through the foam察and over the rollers察while they saw
neither sun nor stars。 And they cried again察 'We shall perish察 for we
know not where we are。 We are lost in the dreary damp darkness察
and cannot tell north from south。'
But Lynceus the long´sighted called gaily from the bows察 'Take heart
again察brave sailors察for I see a pine´clad isle察 and the halls of the kind
Earth´mother察with a crown of clouds around them。'

But Orpheus said察'Turn from them察for no living man can land there此
there is no harbour on the coast察but steep´walled cliffs all round。'
So Ancaios turned the ship away察and for three days more they sailed
on察till they came to Aiaia察Circe's home察and the fairy island of the West。
8
And there Jason bid them land察and seek about for any sign of living
man。 And as they went inland Circe met them察coming down toward
the ship察 and they trembled when they saw her察 for her hair察 and face察
and robes shone like flame。
And she came and looked at Medeia察 and Medeia hid her face
beneath her veil。
And Circe cried察'Ah察wretched girl察have you forgotten all your sins察
that you come hither to my island察where the flowers bloom all the year
round拭 Where is your aged father察 and the brother whom you killed拭
Little do I expect you to return in safety with these strangers whom you
love。 I will send you food and wine此 but your ship must not stay here察
for it is foul with sin察and foul with sin its crew。'
And the heroes prayed her察but in vain察and cried察'Cleanse us from
our guilt' But she sent them away察and said察'Go on to Malea察and there
you may be cleansed察and return home。'
Then a fair wind rose察and they sailed eastward by Tartessus on the
Iberian shore察 till they came to the Pillars of Hercules察 and the
Mediterranean Sea。 And thence they sailed on through the deeps of
Sardinia察and past the Ausonian islands察and the capes of the Tyrrhenian
shore察till they came to a flowery island察upon a still bright summer's eve。
And as they neared it察slowly and wearily察they heard sweet songs upon
the shore。 But when Medeia heard it察she started察 and cried察'Beware察
all heroes察for these are the rocks of the Sirens。 You must pass close by
them察for there is no other channel察but those who listen to that song are
lost。'
Then Orpheus spoke察the king of all minstrels察'Let them match their
song against mine。 I have charmed stones察and trees察and dragons察how
much more the hearts of men' So he caught up his lyre察 and stood
upon the poop察and began his magic song。

The Heroes
And now they could see the Sirens on Anthemousa察the flowery isle察
three fair maidens sitting on the beach察beneath a red rock in the setting
sun察among beds of crimson poppies and golden asphodel。 Slowly they
sung and sleepily察with silver voices察mild and clear察which stole over the
golden waters察 and into the hearts of all the heroes察in spite of Orpheus'
song。
And all things stayed around and listened察the gulls sat in white lines
along the rocks察on the beach great seals lay basking察and kept time with
lazy heads察 while silver shoals of fish came up to hearken察 and
whispered as they broke the shining calm。 The Wind overhead hushed
his whistling察 as he shepherded his clouds toward the west察 and the
clouds stood in mid blue察and listened dreaming察like a flock of golden
sheep。
And as the heroes listened察the oars fell from their hands察 and their
heads drooped on their breasts察 and they closed their heavy eyes察 and
they dreamed of bright still gardens察 and of slumbers under murmuring
pines察 till all their toil seemed foolishness察 and they thought of their
renown no more。
Then one lifted his head suddenly察and cried察'What use in wandering
for ever拭 Let us stay here and rest awhile。' And another察'Let us row
to the shore察and hear the words they sing。' And another察'I care not for
the words察but for the music。 They shall sing me to sleep察that I may
rest。'
And Butes察 the son of Pandion察 the fairest of all mortal men察 leapt
out and swam toward the shore察crying察'I come察I come察 fair maidens察to
live and die here察listening to your song。'
Then Medeia clapped her hands together察 and cried察 'Sing louder察
Orpheus察sing a bolder strain察wake up these hapless sluggards察or none
of them will see the land of Hellas more。'
Then Orpheus lifted his harp察 and crashed his cunning hand across
the strings察and his music and his voice rose like a
