up to heaven察And bow this feeble ruin to the earth察If any power pities
wretched tears察To that I call 。To LAVINIAАWhat察would'st thou kneel
with me拭Do察then察dear heart察for heaven shall hear our prayers察Or with
our sighs we'll breathe the welkin dim And stain the sun with fog察 as
sometime clouds When they do hug him in their melting bosoms。
MARCUS。 O brother察speak with possibility察And do not break into these
deep extremes。 TITUS。 Is not my sorrow deep察having no bottom拭Then be
my passions bottomless with them。 MARCUS。 But yet let reason govern
thy lament。 TITUS。 If there were reason for these miseries察 Then into
limits could I bind my woes。 When heaven doth weep察doth not the earth
o'erflow拭 If the winds rage察 doth not the sea wax mad察 Threat'ning the
welkin with his big´swol'n face拭And wilt thou have a reason for this coil拭
I am the sea察hark how her sighs do blow。 She is the weeping welkin察I the
earth察Then must my sea be moved with her sighs察Then must my earth
with her continual tears Become a deluge察 overflow'd and drown'd察 For
why my bowels cannot hide her woes察But like a drunkard must I vomit
them。 Then give me leave察 for losers will have leave To ease their
stomachs with their bitter tongues。
Enter a MESSENGER察 with two heads and a hand MESSENGER。
Worthy Andronicus察ill art thou repaid For that good hand thou sent'st the
Emperor。 Here are the heads of thy two noble sons察And here's thy hand察in
scorn to thee sent back´ Thy grief their sports察thy resolution mock'd察That
woe is me to think upon thy woes察More than remembrance of my father's
death。 Exit MARCUS。 Now let hot Aetna cool in Sicily察And be my heart
an ever´burning hell These miseries are more than may be borne。 To weep
with them that weep doth ease some deal察But sorrow flouted at is double
death。 LUCIUS。 Ah察that this sight should make so deep a wound察And yet
detested life not shrink thereat That ever death should let life bear his
name察Where life hath no more interest but to breathe 。LAVINIA kisses

TITUS ANDRONICUS
TITUSА MARCUS。 Alas察 poor heart察 that kiss is comfortless As frozen
water to a starved snake。 TITUS。 When will this fearful slumber have an
end拭 MARCUS。 Now farewell察 flatt'ry察 die察 Andronicus。 Thou dost not
slumber此see thy two sons' heads察Thy warlike hand察thy mangled daughter
here察Thy other banish'd son with this dear sight Struck pale and bloodless察
and thy brother察I察Even like a stony image察cold and numb。 Ah now no
more will I control thy griefs。 Rent off thy silver hair察 thy other hand
Gnawing with thy teeth察 and be this dismal sight The closing up of our
most wretched eyes。 Now is a time to storm察why art thou still拭TITUS。
Ha察 ha察 ha MARCUS。 Why dost thou laugh拭 It fits not with this hour。
TITUS。 Why察I have not another tear to shed察Besides察this sorrow is an
enemy察And would usurp upon my wat'ry eyes And make them blind with
tributary tears。 Then which way shall I find Revenge's cave拭For these two
heads do seem to speak to me察And threat me I shall never come to bliss
Till all these mischiefs be return'd again Even in their throats that have
committed them。 Come察 let me see what task I have to do。 You heavy
people察circle me about察That I may turn me to each one of you And swear
unto my soul to right your wrongs。 The vow is made。 Come察brother察take
a head察And in this hand the other will I bear。 And察Lavinia察thou shalt be
employ'd in this察Bear thou my hand察sweet wench察between thy teeth。 As
for thee察boy察go察get thee from my sight察Thou art an exile察and thou must
not stay。 Hie to the Goths and raise an army there察And if ye love me察as I
think you do察Let's kiss and part察for we have much to do。 Exeunt all but
Lucius LUCIUS。 Farewell察Andronicus察 my noble father察 The woefull'st
man that ever liv'd in Rome。 Farewell察 proud Rome察 till Lucius come
again察 He leaves his pledges dearer than his life。 Farewell察 Lavinia察 my
noble sister察 O察 would thou wert as thou tofore hast been But now nor
Lucius nor Lavinia lives But in oblivion and hateful griefs。 If Lucius live察
he will requite your wrongs And make proud Saturnine and his emperess
Beg at the gates like Tarquin and his queen。 Now will I to the Goths察and
raise a pow'r To be reveng'd on Rome and Saturnine。 Exit

TITUS ANDRONICUS
SCENE II。 Rome。 TITUS' house
A banquet。
Enter TITUS察MARCUS察LAVINIA察and the boy YOUNG LUCIUS
TITUS。 So so察now sit察and look you eat no more Than will preserve
just so much strength in us As will revenge these bitter woes of ours。
Marcus察unknit that sorrow´wreathen knot察Thy niece and I察poor creatures察
want our hands察And cannot passionate our tenfold grief With folded arms。
This poor right hand of mine Is left to tyrannize upon my breast察 Who察
when my heart察 all mad with misery察 Beats in this hollow prison of my
flesh察Then thus I thump it down。 To LAVINIAАThou map of woe察that
thus dost talk in signs When thy poor heart beats with outrageous beating察
Thou canst not strike it thus to make it still。 Wound it with sighing察girl察
kill it with groans察 Or get some little knife between thy teeth And just
against thy heart make thou a hole察That all the tears that thy poor eyes let
fall May run into that sink and察soaking in察Drown the lamenting fool in
sea´salt tears。 MARCUS。 Fie察brother察fie Teach her not thus to lay Such
violent hands upon her tender life。 TITUS。 How now Has sorrow made
thee dote already拭 Why察 Marcus察 no man should be mad but I。 What
violent hands can she lay on her life拭Ah察 wherefore dost thou urge the
name of hands拭To bid Aeneas tell the tale twice o'er How Troy was burnt
and he made miserable拭O察handle not the theme察to talk of hands察Lest we
remember still that we have none。 Fie察fie察how franticly I square my talk察
As if we should forget we had no hands察If Marcus did not name the word
of hands Come察let's fall to察and察 gentle girl察eat this此 Here is no drink。
Hark察 Marcus察 what she says´ I can interpret all her martyr'd signs察 She
says she drinks no other drink but tears察Brew'd with her sorrow察mesh'd
upon her cheeks。 Speechless complainer察I will learn thy thought察In thy
dumb action will I be as perfect As begging hermits in their holy prayers。
Thou shalt not sigh察nor hold thy stumps to heaven察Nor wink察nor nod察nor
kneel察nor make a sign察But I of these will wrest an alphabet察And by still
practice learn to know thy meaning。 BOY。 Good grandsire察 leave these
bitter deep laments察 Make my aunt merry with some pleasing tale。
MARCUS。 Alas察the tender boy察in passion mov'd察Doth weep to see his

grandsire's heaviness。 TITUS。 Peace察tender sapling察thou art made of tears察
And tears will quickly melt thy life away。 MARCUS strikes the dish with
a knifeАWhat dost thou strike at察Marcus察with thy knife拭MARCUS。 At
that that I have kill'd察my lord´ a fly。 TITUS。 Out on thee察murderer
