Rdon¨t know the physiognomy of the country拭 You have
not its lineaments defined upon your memory察 as I have
them on mine拭
Three!nay four!pictures line the four´walled cell where are
stored for me the records of the past。 First察 Eton。 All in that
picture is in far perspective察 receding察 diminutive察 but freshly
coloured察green察dewy察with a spring sky察piled with glittering yet
showery clouds察for my childhood was not all sunshine!it had its
overcast察its cold察its stormy hours。 Second察X!察huge察dingy察the
canvas cracked and smoked察a yellow sky察sooty clouds察no sun察no
azure察 the verdure of the suburbs blighted and sullied!a very
dreary scene。
Third察 Belgium察 and I will pause before this landscape。 As to
the fourth察a curtain covers it察which I may hereafter withdraw察or
may not察as suits my convenience and capacity。 At any rate察for the
present it must hang undisturbed。 Belgium name unromantic and
unpoetic察yet name that whenever uttered has in my ear a sound察
in my heart an echo察 such as no other assemblage of syllables察

word察 now as I sit alone near midnight。 It stirs my world of the
past like a summons to resurrection察the graves unclose察the dead

on their vapoury forms察 and strive to ascertain definitely their
outline察the sound which wakened them dies察and they sink察each

and all察like a light wreath of mist察absorbed in the mould察recalled
to urns察resealed in monuments。 Farewell察luminous phantoms
This is Belgium察reader。 Look don¨t call the picture a flat or a
dull one!it was neither flat nor dull to me when I first beheld it。
When I left Ostend on a mild February morning察and found myself
on the road to Brussels察nothing could look vapid to me。 My sense
of enjoyment possessed an edge whetted to the finest察untouched察
keen察exquisite。 I was young察I had good health察pleasure and I had
never met察 no indulgence of hers had enervated or sated one
faculty of my nature。 Liberty I clasped in my arms for the first
time察and the influence of her smile and embrace revived my life
like the sun and the west wind。 Yes察 at that epoch I felt like a
morning traveller who doubts not that from the hill he is
ascending he shall behold a glorious sunrise察what if the track be
strait察steep察and stony拭he sees it not察 his eyes are fixed on that
summit察flushed already察flushed and gilded察and having gained it
he is certain of the scene beyond。 He knows that the sun will face
him察that his chariot is even now coming over the eastern horizon察
and that the herald breeze he feels on his cheek is opening for the
god¨s career a clear察vast path of azure察amidst clouds soft as pearl
and warm as flame。 Difficulty and toil were to be my lot察 but
sustained by energy察 drawn on by hopes as bright as vague察 I
deemed such a lot no hardship。 I mounted now the hill in shade察
there were pebbles察 inequalities察 briars in my path察 but my eyes
were fixed on the crimson peak above察 my imagination was with
the refulgent firmament beyond察 and I thought nothing of the
stones turning under my feet察or of the thorns scratching my face
and hands。
I gazed often察and always with delight察from the window of the

diligence these察be it remembered察were not the days of trains and
railroads。 Well and what did I see拭 I will tell you faithfully。
Green察reedy swamps察 fields fertile but flat察 cultivated in patches
that made them look like magnified kitchen´gardens察 belts of cut
trees察 formal as pollard willows察 skirting the horizon察 narrow
canals察gliding slow by the road´side察painted Flemish farmhouses察
some very dirty hovels察a grey察dead sky察wet road察wet fields察wet
house´tops此not a beautiful察scarcely a picturesque object met my
eye along the whole route察 yet to me察 all was beautiful察 all was
more than picturesque。 It continued fair so long as daylight lasted察
though the moisture of many preceding damp days had sodden
the whole country察 as it grew dark察 however察 the rain
recommenced察 and it was through streaming and starless
darkness my eye caught the first gleam of the lights of Brussels。 I
saw little of the city but its lights that night。 Having alighted from
the diligence察a fiacre conveyed me to the Hotel de !察where I had
been advised by a fellow´traveller to put up察 having eaten a
traveller¨s supper察I retired to bed察and slept a traveller¨s sleep。
Next morning I awoke from prolonged and sound repose with
the impression that I was yet in X!察and perceiving it to be broad
daylight I started up察 imagining that I had overslept myself and
should be behind time at the counting´house。 The momentary and
painful sense of restraint vanished before the revived and reviving
consciousness of freedom察as察throwing back the white curtains of
my bed察 I looked forth into a wide察 lofty foreign chamber察 how
different from the small and dingy察 though not uncomfortable察
apartment I had occupied for a night or two at a respectable inn in
London while waiting for the sailing of the packet Yet far be it
from me to profane the memory of that little dingy room It察too察is
