dressed in the height of fashion察 with the tightest skirts and the
shortest waists察 and gazed at by Miss Ladbrook of the Old
Pastures with a shyness not unsustained by inward criticism。
Partly察Miss Ladbrook felt that her own skirt must be regarded as
unduly lax by the Miss Gunns察 and partly that it was a pity the
Miss Gunns did not show that judgment which she herself would
show if she were in their place察by stopping a little on this side of
the fashion。 On the other hand察 Mrs。 Ladbrook was standing in
skullcap and front察 with her turban in her hand察 curtsying and
smiling blandly察and saying察 After you察ma¨am察院to another lady in
similar circumstances察who had politely offered the precedence at
the looking´glass。

But Miss Nancy had no sooner made her curtsy than an elderly
lady came forward察whose full white muslin kerchief and mob´cap
round her curls of smooth gray hair were in daring contrast with
the puffed yellow satins and topknotted caps of her neighbours。
She approached Miss Nancy with much primness察and said察with a
slow察treble suavity!^Niece察I hope I see you well in health。 ̄ Miss
Nancy kissed her aunt¨s cheek dutifully察 and answered察 with the
same sort of amiable primness察 Quite well察I thank you察aunt察and
I hope I see you the same。 ̄
^Thank you察niece察I keep my health for the present。 And how is
my brother´in´law拭院
These dutiful questions and answers were continued until it
was ascertained in detail that the Lammeters were all as well as
usual察 and the Osgoods likewise察 also that niece Priscilla must
certainly arrive shortly察 and that travelling on pillions in snowy
weather was unpleasant察though a joseph was a great protection。
Then Nancy was formally introduced to her aunt¨s visitors察 the
Miss Gunns察 as being the daughters of a mother known to their
mother察though now for the first time induced to make a journey
into these parts察 and these ladies were so taken by surprise at
finding such a lovely face and figure in an out´of´the´way country
place that they began to feel some curiosity about the dress she
would put on when she took off her joseph。 Miss Nancy察 whose
thoughts were always conducted with the propriety and
moderation conspicuous in her manners察remarked to herself that
the Miss Gunns were rather hard´featured than otherwise察 and
that such very low dresses as they wore might have been
attributed to vanity if their shoulders had been pretty察 but that察
being as they were察 it was not reasonable to suppose that they

showed their necks from a love of display察but rather from some
obligation not inconsistent with sense and modesty。 She felt
convinced察 as she opened her box察 that this must be her aunt
Osgood¨s opinion察for Miss Nancy¨s mind resembled her aunt¨s to a
degree that everybody said was surprising察 considering the
kinship was on Mr。 Osgood¨s side察and though you might not have
supposed it from the formality of their greeting察 there was a
devoted attachment and mutual admiration between aunt and
niece。 Even Miss Nancy¨s refusal of her cousin Gilbert Osgood on
the ground solely that he was her cousin察 though it had grieved
her aunt greatly察had not in the least cooled the preference which
had determined her to leave Nancy several of her hereditary
ornaments察let Gilbert¨s future wife be whom she might。
Three of the ladies quickly retired察 but the Miss Gunns were
quite content that Mrs。 Osgood¨s inclination to remain with her
niece gave them also a reason for staying to see the rustic beauty¨s
toilette。 And it was really a pleasure!from the first opening of the
bandbox察 where everything smelt of lavender and rose´leaves察 to
the clasping of the small coral necklace that fitted closely round
her little white neck。 Everything belonging to Miss Nancy was of
delicate purity and nattiness此 not a crease was where it had no
business to be察not a bit of her linen professed whiteness without
fulfilling its profession察the very pins on her pincushion were stuck
in after a pattern from which she was careful to allow no
aberration察 and as for her own person察 it gave the same idea of
perfect unvarying neatness as the body of a little bird。 It is true
that her light´brown hair was cropped behind like a boy¨s察and was
dressed in front in a number of flat rings察that lay quite away from
her face察 but there was no sort of coiffure that could make Miss

Nancy¨s cheek and neck look otherwise than pretty察and when at
last she stood complete in her silvery twilled silk察her lace tucker察
her coral necklace察and coral eardrops察the Miss Gunns could see
nothing to criticise except her hands察 which bore the traces of
butter´making察 cheese´crushing察 and even still coarser work。 But
Miss Nancy was not ashamed of that察 for while she was dressing
she narrated to her aunt how she and Priscilla had packed their
boxes yesterday察because this morning was baking morning察 and
since they were leaving home察 it was desirable to make a good
supply of meat´pies for the kitchen察 and as she concluded this
judicious remark察she turned to the Miss Gunns that she might not
commit the rudeness of not including them in the conversation。
The Miss Gunns smiled stiffly察and thought what a pity it was that
these rich country´people察 who could afford to buy such good
clothes really Miss Nancy¨s lace and silk were very costly察should
be brought up in utter ignorance and vulgarity。 She actually said
^mate ̄ for ^meat ̄察 appen ̄ for ^perhaps ̄察and ^oss ̄ for ^horse ̄察
which察 to young ladies living in good Lytherly society察 who
habitually said ^`orse ̄察 even in domestic privacy察 and only said
^`appen ̄ on the right occasions察 was necessarily shocking。 Miss
Nancy察 indeed察 had never been to any school higher than Dame
Tedman¨s此 her acquaintance with profane literature hardly went
beyond the rhymes she had worked in her large sampler under the
lamb and the shepherdess察and in order to balance an account察she
was obliged to effect her subtraction by removing visible metallic
shillings and sixpences from a visible metallic total。 There is
hardly a servant´maid in these
