;For the sake of all my brethren I thank God that I am here Poor had been
my Life's best efforts察Now I waste no thought or breath ´ For the prayer of

VERSE此 THE CARVER'S
LESSON
Trust me察 no mere skill of subtle tracery察 No mere practice of a
dexterous hand察Will suffice察without a hidden spirit察That we may察or may
not察understand。
And those quaint old fragments that are left us Have their power in
thisthe Carver brought Earnest care察 and reverent patience察 only
Worthily to clothe some noble thought。
Shut then in the petals of the flowers察Round the stems of all the lilies
twine察Hide beneath each bird's or angel's pinion察Some wise meaning or
some thought divine。
Place in stony hands that pray for ever Tender words of peace察 and
strive to wind Round the leafy scrolls and fretted niches Some true察loving
message to your kind。
Some will praise察some blame察and察soon forgetting察Come and go察nor
even pause to gaze察Only now and then a passing stranger Just may loiter
with a word of praise。
But I think察 when years have floated onward察And the stone is grey察
and dim察and old察And the hand forgotten that has carved it察And the heart
that dreamt it still and cold察
There may come some weary soul察o'erladen With perplexed struggle
in his brain察Or察it may be察fretted with life's turmoil察Or made sore with
some perpetual pain。
Then察 I think those stony hands will open察 And the gentle lilies
overflow察With the blessing and the loving token That you hid there many
years ago。
And the tendrils will unroll察and teach him How to solve the problem
of his pain察And the birds' and angels' wings shake downward On his heart
a sweet and tender rain。
While he marvels at his fancy察 reading Meaning in that quaint and
ancient scroll察Little guessing that the loving Carver Left a message for his

VERSE此 THREE ROSES
Just when the red June Roses blow She gave me onea year ago。 A
Rose whose crimson breath revealed The secret that its heart concealed察
And whose half shy察half tender grace Blushed back upon the giver's face。
A year agoa year ago ´ To hope was not to know。
Just when the red June Roses blow I plucked her onea month ago此
Its half´blown crimson to eclipse察I laid it on her smiling lips察The balmy
fragrance of the south Drew sweetness from her sweeter mouth。 Swiftly do
golden hours creep察 To hold is not to keep。
The red June Roses now are past察This very day I broke the last ´ And
now its perfumed breath is hid察With her察beneath a coffin´lid察There will
its petals fall apart察And wither on her icy heart此 At three red Roses' cost
My world was gained and lost。

VERSE此 MY PICTURE
GALLERY
I。
You write and think of me察 my friend察 with pity察 While you are
basking in the light of Rome察Shut up within the heart of this great city察
Too busy and too poor to leave my home。
II。
You think my life debarred all rest or pleasure察Chained all day to my
ledger and my pen察Too sickly even to use my little leisure To bear me
from the strife and din of men。
III。
Well察it is true察yet察now the days are longer察At sunset I can lay my
writing down察And slowly crawl summer has made me stronger Just to
the nearest outskirt of the town。
IV。
There a wide Common察 blackened though and dreary With factory
smoke察spreads outward to the West察I lie down on the parched´up grass察if
weary察Or lean against a broken wall to rest。
V。
So might a King察turning to Art's rich treasure察At evening察when the
cares of state were done察Enter his royal gallery察drinking pleasure Slowly
from each great picture察one by one。

VI。
Towards the West I turn my weary spirit察 And watch my pictures此
one each night is mine。 Earth and my soul察 sick of day's toil察 inherit A
portion of that luminous peace divine。
VII。
There I have seen a sunset's crimson glory察Burn as if earth were one
great Altar's blaze察 Or察 like the closing of a piteous story察 Light up the
misty world with dying rays。
VIII。
There I have seen the Clouds察in pomp and splendour察Their gold and
purple banners all unfurl察There I have watched colours察 more faint and
tender Than pure and delicate tints upon a pearl。
IX。
Skies strewn with roses fading察 fading slowly察 While one star
trembling watched the daylight die察 Or deep in gloom a sunset察 hidden
wholly察Save through gold rents torn in a violet sky。
X。
Or parted clouds察as if asunder riven By some great angeland beyond
a space Of far´off tranquil light察the gates of Heaven Will lead us grandly
to as calm a place。
XI。
Or stern dark walls of cloudy mountain ranges Hid all the wonders that
we knew must be察While察far on high察some little white clouds changes'
Revealed the glory they alone could see。

XII。
Or in wild wrath the affrighted clouds lay shattered察Like treasures of
the lost Hesperides察All in a wealth of ruined splendour scattered察Save one
strange light on distant silver seas。
XIII。
What land or time can claim the Master Painter察Whose art could teach
him half such gorgeous dyes拭Or skill so rare察but purer hues and fainter
Melt every evening in my western skies。
XIV。
So there I wait察until the shade has lengthened察And night's blue misty
curtain floated down察 Then察 with my heart calmed察 and my spirit
strengthened察I crawl once more back to the sultry town。
XV。
What Monarch察 then察 has nobler recreations Than mine拭 Or where
the great and classic Land Whose wealth of Art delights the gathered
nations That owns a Picture Gallery half as grand拭
