;The Beach Hotel察─ murmured Tom。 ;That is where Mr。 Berg is
stopping。 I hope he doesn't worm any of our secret from Captain Weston察─
and it was with a feeling of uneasiness that the young inventor continued
after his father and Mr。 Damon to where the submarine was。

CHAPTER Nine
Captain Weston's Advent
;Bless my water ballast察but that certainly is a fine boat ─cried Mr。
Damon察when he had been shown over the new craft。 ;I think I shall feel
even safer in that than in the Red Cloud。;
;Oh察 don't go back on the airship ─ exclaimed Mn Sharp。 ;I was
counting on taking you on another trip。;
;Well察 maybe after we get back from under the ocean察─ agreed Mr。
Damon。 ;I particularly like the cabin arrangements of the Advance。 I think
I shall enjoy myself。;
He would be hard to please who could not take pleasure from a trip in
the submarine。 The cabin was particularly fine察 and the sleeping
arrangements were good。
More supplies could be carried than was possible on the airship察and
there was more room in which to cook and serve food。 Mr。 Damon was
fond of good living察and the kitchen pleased him as much as anything else。
Early the next morning Tom set out for Atlantis察 to meet Captain
Weston at the hotel。 The young inventor inquired of the clerk whether the
seafaring man had arrived察 and was told that he had come the previous
evening。
;Is he in his room拭─asked Tom。
;No察─answered the clerk with a peculiar grin。 ;He's an odd character。
Wouldn't go to bed last night until we had every window in his room open察
though it was blowing quite hard察and likely to storm。 The captain said he
was used to plenty of fresh air。 Well察I guess he got it察all right。;
;Where is he now拭─ asked the youth察 wondering what sort of an
individual he was to meet。
;Oh察he was up before sunrise察so some of the scrubwomen told me。
They met him coming from his room察and he went right down to the beach
with a big telescope he always carries with him。 He hasn't come back yet。
Probably he's down on the sand。;
;Hasn't he had breakfast拭─
46

;No。 He left word he didn't want to eat until about four bells察whatever
time that is。;
;It's ten o'clock察─replied Tom察who had been studying up on sea terms
lately。 ;Eight bells is eight o'clock in the morning察or four in the afternoon
or eight at night察according to the time of day。 Then there's one bell for
every half hour察 so four bells this morning would be ten o'clock in this
watch察I suppose。;
;Oh察that's the way it goes察eh拭─asked the clerk。 ;I never could get it
through my head。 What is twelve o'clock noon拭─
;That's eight bells察too察so is twelve o'clock midnight。 Eight bells is as
high as they go on a ship。 But I guess I'll go down and see if I can meet the
captain。 It will soon be ten o'clock察or four bells察and he must be hungry
for breakfast。 By the way察is that Mr。 Berg still here拭─
;No察he went away early this morning。 He and Captain Weston seemed
to strike up quite an acquaintance察the night clerk told me。 They sat and
smoked together until long after midnight察 or eight bells察─ and the clerk
smiled as he glanced down at the big diamond ring on his little finger。
;They did拭─fairly exploded Tom察for he had visions of what the wily
Mr。 Berg might worm out of the simple captain。
;Yes。 Why察isn't the captain a proper man to make friends with拭─and
the clerk looked at Tom curiously。
;Oh察yes察of course察─was the hasty answer。 ;I guess I'll go and see if I
can find himthe captain察I mean。;
Tom hardly knew what to think。 He wished his father察or Mr。 Sharp察
had thought to warn Captain Weston against talking of the wreck。 It might
be too late now。
The young inventor hurried to the beach察which was not far from the
hotel。 He saw a solitary figure pacing up and down察and from the fact that
the man stopped察every now and then察and gazed seaward through a large
telescope察the lad concluded it was the captain for whom he was in search。
He approached察his footsteps making no sound on the sand。 The man was
still gazing through the glass。
;Captain Weston拭─spoke Tom。
Without a show of haste察though the voice must have startled him察the

captain turned。 Slowly he lowered the telescope察 and then he replied
softly此
;That's my name。 Who are you察if I may ask拭─
Tom was struck察more than by anything else察by the gentle voice of the
seaman。 He had prepared himself察 from the description of Mr。 Sharp察 to
meet a gruff察bewhiskered individual察with a voice like a crosscut saw察and
a rolling gait。 Instead he saw a man of medium size察with a smooth face察
merry blue eyes察 and the softest voice and gentlest manner imaginable。
Tom was very much disappointed。 He had looked for a regular sea´dog察
and he met a landsman察as he said afterward。 But it was not long before
our hero changed his mind regarding Captain Weston。
;I'm Tom Swift察─the owner of that name said察 and I have been sent to
show you the way to where our ship is ready to launch。; The young
inventor refrained from mentioning submarine察as it was the wish of Mn
Sharp to disclose this feature of the voyage to the sailor himself。
;Ha察I thought as much察─resumed the captain quietly。 ;It's a fine day察if
I may be permitted to say so察─and he seemed to hesitate察as if there was
some doubt whether or not he might make that observation。
;It certainly is察─ agreed the lad。 Then察 with a smile he added此 It is
nearly eight bells。;
;Ha ─ exclaimed the captain察 also smiling察 but even his manner of
saying ;Ha ─was less demonstrative than that of most persons。 ;I believe I
am getting hungry察if I may be allowed the remark察─and again he seemed
asking Tom's pardon for mentioning the fact。
;Perhaps you will come back to the cabin and have a little breakfast
with me察─ he went on。 ;I don't know what sort of a galley or cook they
have aboard the Beach Hotel察but it can't be much worse than some I've
tackled。;
;No察thank you察─answered the youth。 ;I've had my breakfast。 But I'll
wait for you察and then I'd like to get back。 Dad and Mr。 Sharp are anxious
to meet you。;
;And I am anxious to meet them察if you don't mind me mentioning it察─
was the reply察 as the captain once more put the spyglass to his eye and
took an observation。 ;Not many sails in sight this morning察─ he added。
48

;But the weather is fine察and we ought to get off in good shape to hunt for
the treasure about which Mr。 Sharp wrote me。 I believe we are going after
treasure察he said察 that is察if you don't mind talking about it。;
;Not in the least察─ replied Tom quickly察 thinking this a good
opportunity for broaching a subject that was worrying him。 ;Did you meet
