Judy察with her brother¨s wink察shakes her head察and purses up

her mouth into No察without saying it。

^She¨d want sixpence a´day察 and we can do it for less察院 says

Judy answers with a nod of deepest meaning察and calls察as she

On this severe matron察as she returns to her task of scraping the

butter and cutting the bread察 falls the shadow of her brother察

looking in at the window。 For whom察 knife and loaf in hand察she

    Small nods again。

^That¨s right。 Live at his expense as much as you can察and take

warning by his foolish example。 That¨s the use of such a friend。

The only use you can put him to察院says the venerable sage。

His grandson察 without receiving this good counsel as dutifully

as he might察 honours it with all such acceptance as may lie in a

slight wink and a nod察and takes a chair at the tea´table。 The four

old faces then hover over teacups察 like a company of ghastly

cherubim察 Mrs Smallweed perpetually twitching her head and

chattering at the trivets察 and Mr Smallweed requiring to be

repeatedly shaken up like a large black draught。

^Yes察yes察院says the good old gentleman察reverting to his lesson

of wisdom。 ^That¨s such advice as your father would have given

true son。 ̄ Whether it is intended to be conveyed that he was

particularly pleasant to look at察on that account察does not appear。

^He was my true son察院 repeats the old gentleman察 folding his

bread and butter on his knee察 a good accountant察and died fifteen

years ago。 ̄

Mrs Smallweed察 following her usual instinct察 breaks out with

^Fifteen hundred pound。 Fifteen hundred pound in a black box察

fifteen hundred pound locked up察fifteen hundred pound put away

and hid 院Her worthy husband察setting aside his bread and butter察

immediately discharges the cushion at her察crushes her against the

side of her chair察 and falls back in his own察 overpowered。 His

appearance察 after visiting Mrs Smallweed with one of these

admonitions察 is particularly impressive and not wholly

prepossessing此 firstly察 because the exertion generally twists his

black skull cap over one eye and gives him an air of goblin

rakishness察 secondly察 because he mutters violent imprecations

against Mrs Smallweed察and thirdly察because the contrast between

those powerful expressions and his powerless figure is suggestive

of a baleful old malignant察who would be very wicked if he could。

All this察 however察 is so common in the Smallweed family circle察

that it produces no impression。 The old gentleman is merely

shaken察 and has his internal feathers beaten up察 the cushion is

restored to its usual place beside him察 and the old lady察 perhaps

with her cap adjusted察 and perhaps not察 is planted in her chair

again察ready to be bowled down like a ninepin。

Some time elapses察 in the present instance察 before the old

gentleman is sufficiently cool to resume his discourse察 and even

then he mixes it up with several edifying expletives addressed to

the unconscious partner of his bosom察who holds communication

with nothing on earth but trivets。 As thus此

^If your father察 Bart察 had lived longer察 he might have been

worth a great deal of money!you brimstone chatterer but just

as he was beginning to build up the house that he had been

making the foundations for察 through many a year!you jade of a

magpie察jackdaw察and poll´parrot察what do you mean he took ill

and died of a low fever察always being a sparing and a spare man察

full of business care!I should like to throw a cat at you instead of

a cushion察 and I will too if you make such a confounded fool of

yourself and your mother察who was a prudent woman as dry as a

chip察just dwindled away like touchwood after you and Judy were

born!You are an old pig。 You are a brimstone pig。 You¨re a head

of swine 院

Judy察 not interested in what she has often heard察 begins to

collect in a basin various tributary streams of tea from the bottoms

of cups and saucers and from the bottom of the teapot察for the little

charwoman¨s evening meal。 In like manner she gets together察 in

the iron bread´basket察as many outside fragments and worn´down

heels of loaves as the rigid economy of the house has left in

existence。

^But your father and me were partners察 Bart察院 says the old

gentleman察 and when I am gone察you and Judy will have all there

is。 It¨s rare for you both察that you went out early in life!Judy to

the flower business察and you to the law。 You won¨t want to spend

it。 You¨ll get your living without it察and put more to it。 When I am

gone察Judy will go back to the flower business察and you¨ll stick to

the law。 ̄

One might infer察 from Judy¨s appearance察 that her business

rather lay with the thorns than the flowers察 but察 she has察 in her

time察been apprenticed to the art and mystery of artificial flower´

making。 A close observer might perhaps detect both in her eye

and her brother¨s察when their venerable grandsire anticipates his

being gone察some little impatience to know when he may be going察
