man!which may be improved by cultivation察 but can never be
originated!you may still rely on me。 I have been faithful to my
post察since the days of His Royal Highness the Prince Regent察and
I will not desert it now。 No察my son。 If you have ever contemplated
your father¨s poor position with a feeling of pride察 you may rest
assured that he will do nothing to tarnish it。 For yourself察Prince察
whose character is different we cannot be all alike察 nor is it
advisable that we should察work察be industrious察earn money察and
extend the connection as much as possible。 ̄

replied Prince。
^I have no doubt of it察院said Mr Turveydrop。 ^Your qualities are
not shining察my dear child察but they are steady and useful。 And to
both of you察my children察I would merely observe察in the spirit of a
sainted Wooman on whose path I had the happiness of casting察 I
believe察 some ray of light察take care of the establishment察 take
care of my simple wants察and bless you both 院
Old Mr Turveydrop then became so very gallant察 in honour of
the occasion察that I told Caddy we must really go to Thavies Inn at
once if we were to go at all that day。 So we took our departure察
after a very loving farewell between Caddy and her betrothed此and
during our walk she was so happy察 and so full of old Mr
Turveydrop¨s praises察 that I would not have said a word in his
disparagement for any consideration。
The house in Thavies Inn had bills in the windows announcing
that it was to let察and it looked dirtier and gloomier and ghastlier
than ever。 The name of poor Mr Jellyby had appeared in the list of
Bankrupts察 but a day or two before察 and he was shut up in the
dining´room with two gentlemen察 and a heap of blue bags察
account´books察 and papers察 making the most desperate
endeavours to understand his affairs。 They appeared to me to be
quite beyond his comprehension察for when Caddy took me into the
dining´room by mistake察 and we came upon Mr Jellyby in his
spectacles察forlornly fenced into a corner by the great dining´table
and the two gentlemen察 he seemed to have given up the whole
thing察and to be speechless and insensible。
Going upstairs to Mrs Jellyby¨s room the children were all
screaming in the kitchen察and there was no servant to be seen察we
found that lady in the midst of a voluminous correspondence察

opening察reading察and sorting letters察with a great accumulation of
torn covers on the floor。 She was so preoccupied that at first she
did not know me察though she sat looking at me with that curious察
bright´eyed察far´off look of hers。
^Ah Miss Summerson拭院 she said at last。 ^I was thinking of
something so different I hope you are well。 I am happy to see you。
Mr Jarndyce and Miss Clare quite well拭院
I hoped in return that Mr Jellyby was quite well。
^Why察 not quite察 my dear察院 said Mrs Jellyby察 in the calmest
manner。 ^He has been unfortunate in his affairs察and is a little out
of spirits。 Happily for me察 I am so much engaged that I have no
time to think about it。 We have察 at the present moment察 one
hundred and seventy families察 Miss Summerson察 averaging five
persons in each察either gone or going to the left bank of the Niger。 ̄
I thought of the one family so near us察who were neither gone
nor going to the left bank of the Niger察 and wondered how she
could be so placid。
^You have brought Caddy back察 I see察院 observed Mrs Jellyby察
with a glance at her daughter。 ^It has become quite a novelty to
see her here。 She has almost deserted her old employment察and in
fact obliges me to employ a boy。 ̄
^I am sure察Ma察 ̄ began Caddy。
^Now you know察Caddy察院her mother mildly interposed察 that I
do employ a boy察who is now at his dinner。 What is the use of your
contradicting拭院
^I was not going to contradict察 Ma察院 returned Caddy。 ^I was
only going to say察 that surely you wouldn¨t have me be a mere
drudge all my life。 ̄
^I believe察my dear察院said Mrs Jellyby察still opening her letters察

casting her bright eyes smilingly over them察 and sorting them as
she spoke察 that you have a business example before you in your
mother。 Besides。 A mere drudge拭 If you had any sympathy with
the destinies of the human race察it would raise you high above any
such idea。 But you have none。 I have often told you察 Caddy察 you
have no such sympathy。 ̄
^Not if it¨s Africa察Ma察I have not。 ̄
^Of course you have not。 Now察 if I were not happily so much
engaged察Miss Summerson察院said Mrs Jellyby察sweetly casting her
eyes for a moment on me察 and considering where to put the
particular letter she had just opened察 this would distress and
disappoint me。 But I have so much to think of察in connection with
Borrioboola´Gha察 and it is so necessary I should concentrate
myself察that there is my remedy察you see。 ̄
As Caddy gave me a glance of entreaty察and as Mrs Jellyby was
looking far away into Africa straight through my bonnet and head察
I thought it a good opportunity to come to the subject of my visit察
and to attract Mrs Jellyby¨s attention。
^Perhaps察院 I began察 you will wonder what has brought me
here to interrupt you。 ̄
^I am always delighted to see Miss Summerson察院 said Mrs
Jellyby察pursuing her employment with a placid smile。 ^Though I
wish察院 and she shook her head察 she was more interested in the
Borrioboolan project。 ̄
^I have come with Caddy察院said I察 because Caddy justly thinks
she ought not to have a secret from her mother察and fancies I shall
encourage and aid her though I am sure I don¨t know how in
imparting one。 ̄
^Caddy察院 said Mrs Jellyby察 pausing for a moment in her

occupation察and then serenely pursuing it after shaking her head察
^you are going to tell me some nonsense。 ̄
Caddy untied the strings of her bonnet察took her bonnet off察and
letting it dangle on the floor by the strings察 and crying heartily察
said察 Ma察I am engaged。 ̄
^O察 you ridiculous child 院 observed Mrs Jellyby察 with an
abstracted air察as she looked over the despatch last opened察 what
a goose you are 院
