again察and as he leaned against the wall察he shook the hovel。

^He has been talking off and on about such like察 all day察

ma¨am察院said Jenny察softly。 ^Why察how you stare This is my lady察

Jo。 ̄

^Is it拭院returned the boy察doubtfully察and surveying me with his

arm held out above his burning eyes。 ^She looks to me the t¨other

one。 It ain¨t the bonnet察nor yet it ain¨t the gownd察but she looks to

me the t¨other one。 ̄

My little Charley察with her premature experience of illness and

trouble察 had pulled off her bonnet and shawl察 and now went

quietly up to him with a chair察and sat him down in it察like an old

sick nurse。 Except that no such attendant could have shown him

Charley¨s youthful face察which seemed to engage his confidence。

    ^I say 院 said the boy。 ^You tell me。 Ain¨t the lady the t¨other

lady拭院

Charley shook her head察 as she methodically drew his rags

about him and made him as warm as she could。

    ^O 院the boy muttered。 ^Then I ¨spose she ain¨t。 ̄

^I came to see if I could do you any good察院said I。 ^What is the

matter with you拭院

^I¨m a´being froze察院 returned the boy hoarsely察 with his

haggard gaze wandering about me察 and then burnt up察and then

froze察and then burnt up察ever so many times in a hour。 And my

head¨s all sleepy察and all a´going mad!like!and I¨m so dry!and

my bones isn¨t half so much bones as pain。 ̄

^When did he come here拭院I asked the woman。

^This morning察ma¨am察I found him at the corner of the town。 I

had known him up in London yonder。 Hadn¨t I察Jo拭院

    ^Tom´all´Alone¨s察院the boy replied。

Whenever he fixed his attention or his eyes察 it was only for a

very little while。 He soon began to droop his head again察and roll it

heavily察and speak as if he were half awake。

^When did he come from London拭院I asked。

^I come from London yes¨day察院 said the boy himself察 now

flushed and hot。 ^I¨m a´going somewheres。 ̄

    ^Where is he going拭院I asked。

    ^Somewheres察院repeated the boy察in a louder tone。 ^I have been

moved on察 and moved on察 more nor ever I was afore察 since the

t¨other one giv¨ me the sov¨ring。 Mrs Snagsby察 she¨s always a´

watching察 and a´driving of me!what have I done to her拭and

they¨re all a´watching and a´driving of me。 Every one of ¨em¨s

doing of it察from the time when I don¨t get up察to the time when I

don¨t go to bed。 And I¨m a going somewheres。 That¨s where I¨m a´

going。 She told me察 down in Tom´all´Alone¨s察 as she come from

Stolbuns察 and so I took the Stolbuns Road。 It¨s as good as

another。 ̄

He always concluded by addressing Charley。

^What is to be done with him拭院said I察taking the woman aside。

^He could not travel in this state察 even if he had a purpose察 and

knew where he was going 院

^I know no more察ma¨am察than the dead察院she replied察glancing

compassionately at him。 ^Perhaps the dead know better if they

could only tell us。 I¨ve kept him here all day for pity¨s sake察 and

I¨ve given him broth and physic察and Liz is gone to try if any one

will take him in here¨s my pretty in the bed!her child察but I call it

mine察but I can¨t keep him long察for if my husband was to come

home and find him here察 he¨d be rough in putting him out察 and

might do him a hurt。 Hark Here comes Liz back 院

The other woman came hurriedly in as she spoke察and the boy

got up with a half obscured sense that he was expected to be

going。 When the little child awoke察and when and how Charley got

at it察took it out of bed察and began to walk about hushing it察I don¨t

know。 There she was察doing all this察in a quiet motherly manner察

as if she were living in Mrs Blinder¨s attic with Tom and Emma

again。

The friend had been here and there察and had been played about

from hand to hand察and had come back as she went。 At first it was

too early for the boy to be received into the proper refuge察and at

least it was too late。 One official sent her to another察and the other

sent her back again to the first察 and so backward and forward察

until it appeared to me as if both must have been appointed for

their skill in evading their duties察instead of performing them。 And

now察 after all察 she said察 breathing quickly察 for she had been

running察 and was frightened too察 Jenny察 your master¨s on the

for we can do no more for him 院 They put a few half´pence

together察and hurried them into his hand察and so察in an oblivious察

half´thankful察half´insensible way察he shuffled out of the house。

^Give me the child察my dear 院said its mother to Charley察 and

thank you kindly too Jenny察woman dear察good night Young lady察

if my master don¨t fall out with me察I¨ll look down by the kiln by´

and´bye察 where the boy will be most like察 and again in the

morning 院She hurried off察and presently we passed her hushing

and singing to her child at her own door察 and looking anxiously

along the road for her drunken husband。

I was afraid of staying then to speak to either woman察 lest I

should bring her into trouble。 But I said to Charley that we must

not leave the boy to die。 Charley察 who knew what to do much

better than I did察and whose quickness equalled her presence of

mind察glided on before me察and presently we came up with Jo察just

short of the brick´kiln。

I think he must have begun his journey with some small bundle

under his arm察and must have had it stolen or lost it。 For he still

carried his wretched fragment of fur cap like a bundle察though he

went bare´headed through the rain察 which now fell fast。 He

stopped when we called to him察and again showed a dread of me

when I came up察standing with his lustrous eyes fixed upon me察

and even arrested in his shivering fit。

I asked him to come with us察and we would take care that he

^I don¨t want no shelter察院he said察 I can lay amongst the warm

^But don¨t you know that people die there拭院returned Charley。

^They dies everywheres察院 said the boy。 ^They dies in their
