you察院returned Caddy。
To the Old Street Road we went察 and there inquired at Mrs
Guppy¨s residence for Mrs Guppy。 Mrs Guppy察 occupying the

parlours察 and having indeed been visibly in danger of cracking
herself like a nut in the front parlour door by peeping out before
she was asked for察 immediately presented herself察and requested
us to walk in。 She was an old lady in a large cap察with rather a red
nose and rather an unsteady eye察 but smiling all over。 Her close
little sitting´room was prepared for a visit察and there was a portrait
of her son in it察 which I had almost written here察 was more like
than life察 it insisted upon him with such obstinacy察 and was so
determined not to let him off。
Not only was the portrait there察but we found the original there
too。 He was dressed in a great many colours察and was discovered
at a table reading law´papers with his forefinger to his forehead。
^Miss Summerson察院 said Mr Guppy察 rising察 this is indeed an
Oasis。 Mother察will you be so good as to put a chair for the other
lady察and get out of the gangway。 ̄
Mrs Guppy察whose incessant smiling gave her quite a waggish
appearance察 did as her son requested察 and then sat down in a
corner察 holding her pocket´handkerchief to her chest察 like a
fomentation察with both hands。
I presented Caddy察and Mr Guppy said that any friend of mine
was more than welcome。 I then proceeded to the object of my visit。
^I took the liberty of sending you a note察sir察院said I。
Mr Guppy acknowledged the receipt by taking it out of his
breast´pocket察putting it to his lips察and returning it to his pocket
with a bow。 Mr Guppy¨s mother was so diverted that she rolled her
head as she smiled察and made a silent appeal to Caddy with her
elbow。
^Could I speak to you alone for a moment拭院said I。
Anything like the jocoseness of Mr Guppy¨s mother察 now察 I

think I never saw。 She made no sound of laughter察but she rolled
her head察 and shook it察 and put her handkerchief to her mouth察
and appealed to Caddy with her elbow察 and her hand察 and her
shoulder察 and was so unspeakably entertained altogether that it
was with some difficulty she could marshal Caddy through the
folding´door into her bedroom adjoining。
^Miss Summerson察院 said Mr Guppy察 you will excuse the
waywardness of a parent ever mindful of a son¨s happiness。 My
mother察though highly exasperating to the feelings察is actuated by
maternal dictates。 ̄
I could have hardly have believed that anybody could in a
moment have turned so red察or changed so much察as Mr Guppy did
when I now put up my veil。
^I asked the favour of seeing you for a few moments here察院said
I察 in preference to calling at Mr Kenge¨s察because察remembering
what you said on an occasion when you spoke to me in confidence察
I feared I might otherwise cause you some embarrassment察 Mr
Guppy。 ̄
I caused him embarrassment enough as it was察 I am sure。 I
never saw such faltering察 such confusion察 such amazement and
apprehension。
^Miss Summerson察院 stammered Mr Guppy察 I!I!beg your
pardon察 but in our profession!we!we!find it necessary to be
explicit。 You have referred to an occasion察 miss察 when I!when I
did myself the honour of making a declaration which! ̄
Something seemed to rise in his throat that he could not possibly
swallow。 He put his hand there察coughed察made faces察tried again
to swallow it察coughed again察made faces again察looked all around
the room察and fluttered his papers。

^A kind of giddy sensation has come upon me察 miss察院 he
explained察 which rather knocks me over。 I!er!a little subject to
this sort of thing!er!By George 院
I gave him a little time to recover。 He consumed it in putting his
hand to his forehead and taking it away again察and in backing his
chair into the corner behind him。
^My intention was to remark察 miss察院 said Mr Guppy察 亜dear
me!something bronchial察I think!hem to remark that you was
so good on that occasion察 as to repel and repudiate that
declaration。 You!you wouldn¨t perhaps object to admit that拭
Though no witnesses are present察it might be a satisfaction to!to
your mind!if you was to put in that admission。 ̄
^There can be no doubt察院said I察 that I declined your proposal
without any reservation or qualification whatever察Mr Guppy。 ̄
^Thank you miss察院 he returned察 measuring the table with his
troubled hands。 ^So far that¨s satisfactory察and it does you credit。
Er!this is certainly bronchial must be in the tubes!er!you
wouldn¨t perhaps be offended if I was to mention!not that it¨s
necessary察 for your own good sense or any person¨s sense must
show ¨em that!if I was to mention that such declaration on my
part was final察and there terminated拭院
^I quite understand that察院said I。
^Perhaps!er!it may not be worth the form察but it might be a
satisfaction to your mind!perhaps you wouldn¨t object to admit
that察miss拭院said Mr Guppy。
^I admit it most fully and freely察院said I。
^Thank you察院returned Mr Guppy。 ^Very honourable察I am sure。
I regret that my arrangements in life察 combined with
circumstances over which I have no control察will put it out of my

power ever to fall back upon that offer察or to renew it in any shape
or form whatever察but it will ever be a retrospect entwined!er!
with friendship¨s bowers。 ̄ Mr Guppy¨s bronchitis came to his
relief察and stopped his measurement of the table。
^I may now perhaps mention what I wished to say to you拭院 I
began。
^I shall be honoured察 I am sure察院 said Mr Guppy。 ^I am so
persuaded that your own good sense and right feeling察miss察will!
will keep you as square as possible!that I can have nothing but
pleasure察I am sure察in hearing any observation you may wish to
offer。 ̄
^You were so good as to imply察on that occasion! ̄
^Excuse me察 miss察院 said Mr Guppy察 but we had better not
travel out of the record into implication。 I cannot admit that I
implied anything。 ̄
^You said on that occasion察院 I recommenced察 that you might
possibly have the means of advancing my interests察
