excuse himself。

^And what can you have to say察 Snagsby察院 demands Mr

Tulkinghorn察 about her拭院

^Well sir察院 returns the stationer察 shading his communication

with his hat察 it falls a little hard upon me。 My domestic happiness

is very great!at least察it¨s as great as can be expected察I¨m sure!

but my little woman is rather given to jealousy。 Not to put too fine

a point upon it察she is very much given to jealousy。 And you see察a

foreign female of that genteel appearance coming into the shop察

and hovering!I should be the last to make use of a strong

expression察if I could avoid it察but hovering sir!in the court!you

know it is!now ain¨t it拭I only put it to yourself sir。 ̄

Mr Snagsby having said this in a very plaintive manner察throws

in a cough of general application to fill up all the blanks。

^Why察what do you mean拭院asks Mr Tulkinghorn。

^Just so sir察院returns Mr Snagsby察 I was sure you would feel it

yourself察 and would excuse the reasonableness of my feelings

when coupled with the known excitableness of my little woman。

You see察the foreign female!which you mentioned her name just

now察 with quite a native sound I am sure!caught up the word

Snagsby that night察 being uncommon quick察 and made inquiry察

and got the direction and come at dinner´time。 Now Guster察 our

young woman察is timid and has fits察and she察 taking fright at the

foreigner¨s looks!which are fierce!and at a grinding manner

that she has of speaking!which is calculated to alarm a weak

mind!gave way to it察 instead of bearing up against it察 and

tumbled down the kitchen stairs out of one into another察such fits

as I do sometimes think are never gone into察or come out of察in any

house but ours。 Consequently there was by good fortune ample

occupation for my little woman察and only me to answer the shop。

When she did say that Mr Tulkinghorn察being always denied to her

by his Employer which I had no doubt at the time was a foreign

mode of viewing a clerk察 she would do herself the pleasure of

continually calling at my place until she was let in here。 Since then

she has been察 as I began by saying察 hovering!Hovering sir察院 Mr

Snagsby repeats the word with pathetic emphasis察 in the court。

The effects of which movement it is impossible to calculate。 I

shouldn¨t wonder if it might have already given rise to the

painfullest mistakes even in the neighbours¨ minds察 not

mentioning if such a thing was possible my little woman。

Whereas察Goodness knows察院says Mr Snagsby察shaking his head察 I

never had an idea of a foreign female察 except as being formerly

connected with a bunch of brooms and a baby察 or at the present

time with a tambourine and earrings。 I never had察I do assure you

sir 院

Mr Tulkinghorn has listened gravely to this complaint察 and

inquires察 when the stationer has finished察 And that¨s all察 is it察

Snagsby拭院

^Why yes sir察that¨s all察院says Mr Snagsby察ending with a cough

that plainly adds察 and it¨s enough too!for me。 ̄

^I don¨t know what Mademoiselle Hortense may want or mean察

unless she is mad察院says the lawyer。

^Even if she was察 you know sir察院 Mr Snagsby pleads察 it

wouldn¨t be a consolation to have some weapon or another in the

form of a foreign dagger察planted in the family。 ̄

    ^No察院 says the other。 ^Well察 well This shall be stopped。 I am

sorry you have been inconvenienced。 If she comes again察send her

here。 ̄

Mr Snagsby察with much bowing and short apologetic coughing察

takes his leave察lightened in heart。 Mr Tulkinghorn goes upstairs察

saying to himself察 These women were created to give trouble察the

whole earth over。 The Mistress not being enough to deal with察

here¨s the maid now But I will be short with this jade at least 院

So saying he unlocks his door察 gropes his way into his murky

rooms察lights his candles察and looks about him。 It is too dark to see

much of allegory overhead there察 but that importunate Roman察

who is for ever toppling out of the clouds and pointing察is at his old

work pretty distinctly。 Not honouring him with much attention察

Mr Tulkinghorn takes a small key from his pocket察 unlocks a

drawer in which there is another key察 which unlocks a chest in

which there is another察and so comes to the cellar´key察with which

he prepares to descend to the regions of old wine。 He is going

towards the door with a candle in his hand察when a knock comes。

^Who¨s this拭Ay察ay察 mistress察it¨s you察 is it拭 You appear at a

good time。 I have just been hearing of you。 Now What do you

want拭院

He stands the candle on the chimney´piece in the clerk¨s hall察

and taps his dry cheek with the key察as he addresses these words

of welcome to Mademoiselle Hortense。 That feline personage察with

her lips tightly shut察 and her eyes looking out at him sideways察

softly closes the door before replying。

^I have had great deal of trouble to find you察sir。 ̄

    ^Have you 院

^I have been here very often察sir。 It has always been said to me察

he is not at home察 he is engage察 he is this and that察 he is not for

you。 ̄

    ^Quite right察and quite true。 ̄

    ^Not true。 Lies 院

At times察there is a suddenness in the manner of Mademoiselle

Hortense so like a bodily spring upon the subject of it察 that such

subject involuntarily starts and falls back。 It is Mr Tulkinghorn¨s

case at present察 though Mademoiselle Hortense察 with her eyes

almost shut up but still looking out sideways察 is only smiling

contemptuously and shaking her head。

^Now察mistress察院says the lawyer察tapping the key hastily upon

the chimney´piece。 ^If you have anything to say察say it察say it。 ̄

^Sir察 you have not use me well。 You have been mean and

shabby。 ̄

^Mean and shabby察 eh拭院 returns the lawyer察 rubbing his nose

with the key。

^Yes。 What is it that I tell you拭You know you have。 You have

attrapped me!catched me!to give you information察 you have

asked me to show you the dress of mine my Lady must have wore

that night察 you have prayed me to come in it here to meet that
