really had a disinterested appearance察 and captivated my

Guardian察if not察for the moment察Ada too。

^You are welcome to love him as much as you like察院 returned

Mr Jarndyce察 but we must save his pocket察Harold。 ̄

^Oh 院said Mr Skimpole。 ^His pocket拭Now察you are coming to

what I don¨t understand。 ̄ Taking a little more claret察and dipping

one of the cakes in it察he shook his head and smiled at Ada and me

with an ingenuous foreboding that he never could be made to

understand。 ̄

^If you go with him here or there察院said my Guardian察plainly察

^you must not let him pay for both。 ̄

^My dear Jarndyce察院 returned Mr Skimpole察 his genial face

irradiated by the comicality of this idea察 what am I to do拭 If he

takes me anywhere察I must go。 And how can I pay拭I never have

any money。 If I had any money察 I don¨t know anything about it。

Suppose I say to a man察how much拭Suppose the man says to me

seven and sixpence拭I know nothing about seven and sixpence。 It

is impossible for me to pursue the subject察with any consideration

for the man。 I don¨t go about asking busy people what seven and

sixpence is in Moorish!which I don¨t understand。 Why should I

go about asking them what seven and sixpence is in Money!

which I don¨t understand拭院

^Well察院 said my Guardian察 by no means displeased with this

artless reply察 if you come to any kind of journeying with Rick察you

must borrow the money of me never breathing the least allusion

to that circumstance察and leave the calculation to him。 ̄

^My dear Jarndyce察院returned Mr Skimpole察 I will do anything

to give you pleasure察 but it seems an idle form!a superstition。

Besides察 I give you my word察 Miss Clare and my dear Miss

Summerson察I thought Mr Carstone was immensely rich。 I thought

he had only to make over something察or to sign a bond察or a draft

or a cheque察or a bill察or to put something on a file somewhere察to

bring down a shower of money。 ̄

    ^Indeed it is not so察sir察院said Ada。 ^He is poor。 ̄

^No察really拭院returned Mr Skimpole察with his bright smile察 you

surprise me。 ̄

^And not being the richer for trusting in a rotten reed察院said my

Guardian察 laying his hand emphatically on the sleeve of Mr

Skimpole¨s dressing´gown察 be you very careful not to encourage

him in that reliance察Harold。 ̄

^My dear good friend察院 returned Mr Skimpole察 and my dear

Miss Summerson察and my dear Miss Clare察how can I do that拭It¨s

business察and I don¨t know business。 It is he who encourages me。

He emerges from great feats of business察 presents the brightest

prospects before me as their result察and calls upon me to admire

them。 I do admire them!as bright prospects。 But I know no more

about them察and I tell him so。 ̄

The helpless kind of candour with which he presented this

before us察 the light´hearted manner in which he was amused by

his innocence察 the fantastic way in which he took himself under

his own protection and argued about that curious person察

combined with the delightful ease of everything he said exactly to

make out my Guardian¨s case。 The more I saw of him察 the more

unlikely it seemed to me察 when he was present察 that he could

design察conceal察or influence anything察and yet the less likely that

appeared when he was not present察and the less agreeable it was

to think of his having anything to do with anyone for whom I

cared。

Hearing that his examination as he called it was now over察Mr

Skimpole left the room with a radiant face to fetch his daughters

his sons had run away at various times察 leaving my Guardian

quite delighted by the manner in which he had vindicated his

childish character。 He soon came back察 bringing with him the

three young ladies and Mrs Skimpole察 who had once been a

beauty察but was now a delicate high´nosed invalid察suffering under

a complication of disorders。

^This察院said Mr Skimpole察 is my Beauty daughter察Arethusa!

plays and sings odds and ends like her father。 This is my

Sentiment daughter察 Laura!plays a little but don¨t sing。 This is

my Comedy daughter察 Kitty!sings a little but don¨t play。 We all

draw a little察and compose a little察and none of us have any idea of

time or money。 ̄

Mrs Skimpole sighed察I thought察as if she would have been glad

to strike out this item in the family attainments。 I also thought that

she rather impressed her sigh upon my Guardian察 and that she

took every opportunity of throwing in another。

^It is pleasant察院 said Mr Skimpole察 turning his sprightly eyes

from one to the other of us察 and it is whimsically interesting察 to

trace peculiarities in families。 In this family we are all children察

and I am the youngest。 ̄

The daughters察 who appeared to be very fond of him察 were

amused by this droll fact察particularly the Comedy daughter。

^My dears察it is true察院said Mr Skimpole察 is it not拭So it is察and

so it must be察because察like the dogs in the hymn察 it is our nature

to。¨ Now察 here is Miss Summerson with a fine administrative

capacity察 and a knowledge of details perfectly surprising。 It will

sound very strange in Miss Summerson¨s ears察I dare say察that we

know nothing about chops in this house。 But we don¨t察 not the

least。 We can¨t cook anything whatever。 A needle and thread we

don¨t know how to use。 We admire the people who possess the

practical wisdom we want察but we don¨t quarrel with them。 Then

why should they quarrel with us拭 Live察 and let live察 we say to

them。 Live upon your practical wisdom察and let us live upon you 院

He laughed察 but察 as usual察 seemed quite candid察 and really to

mean what he said。

^We have sympathy察 my roses察院said Mr Skimpole察 sympathy

for everything。 Have we not拭院

    ^O yes察papa察院cried the three daughters。

^In fact察that is our family department察院said Mr Skimpole察 in

this hurly´burly of life。 We are capable of looking on and of being

interested察and we do look on察and we are interested。 What more

can we do Here is my Beauty daughter察 married these three

years。 Now察I dare say her marrying another child察and having two

more察was all wrong in point of political economy此but it was very

agreeable。
