recall the scene。 First察I was not quite unconscious of the contrast察

in respect of meaning and intention察 between the silent look

directed that way察 and the flow of words that had preceded it。

Secondly察though Mr Jarndyce¨s glance察as he withdrew it察rested

for but a moment on me察I felt as if察in that moment察he confided to

me!and knew that he confided to me察 and that I received the

confidence!his hope that Ada and Richard might one day enter

on a dearer relationship。

Mr Skimpole could play on the piano察and the violoncello察and

he was a composer!had composed half an opera once察 but got

tired of it!and played what he composed察with taste。 After tea we

had quite a little concert察 in which Richard!who was enthralled

by Ada¨s singing察 and told me that she seemed to know all the

songs that ever were written!and Mr Jarndyce察and I察 were the

audience。 After a little while I missed察 first Mr Skimpole察 and

afterwards Richard察and while I was thinking how could Richard

stay away so long察and lose so much察the maid who had given me

the keys looked in at the door察saying察 If you please察miss察could

you spare a minute拭院

When I was shut out with her in the hall察she said察holding up

her hands察 Oh if you please察 miss察 Mr Carstone says would you

come upstairs to Mr Skimpole¨s room。 He has been took察miss 院

    ^Took拭院said I。

    ^Took察miss。 Sudden察院said the maid。

I was apprehensive that his illness might be of a dangerous

kind察but of course察I begged her to be quiet and not disturb any

one察 and collected myself察 as I followed her quickly upstairs察

sufficiently to consider what were the best remedies to be applied

if it should prove to be a fit。 She threw open a door察 and I went

into a chamber察 where察 to my unspeakable surprise察 instead of

finding Mr Skimpole stretched upon the bed察or prostrate on the

floor察 I found him standing before the fire察 smiling at Richard察

while Richard察 with a face of great embarrassment察 looked at a

person on a sofa察in a white great coat察with smooth hair upon his

head察 and not much of it察 which he was wiping smoother察 and

making less of察with a pocket´handkerchief。

^Miss Summerson察院said Richard察hurriedly察 I am glad you are

come。 You will be able to advise us。 Our friend察 Mr Skimpole!

don¨t be alarmed is arrested for debt。 ̄

^And察 really察 my dear Miss Summerson察院 said Mr Skimpole察

with his agreeable candour察 I never was in a situation察in which

that excellent sense察 and quiet habit of method and usefulness察

which anybody must observe in you who has the happiness of

being a quarter of an hour in your society察was more needed。 ̄

The person on the sofa察 who appeared to have a cold in his

head察gave such a very loud snort察that he startled me。

^Are you arrested for much察sir拭院I inquired of Mr Skimpole。

^My dear Miss Summerson察院 said he察 shaking his head

pleasantly察 I don¨t know。 Some pounds察 odd shillings察 and half´

pence察I think察were mentioned。 ̄

    ^It¨s twenty´four pound察 sixteen察 and seven´pence ha¨penny察院

observed the stranger。 ^That¨s wot it is。 ̄

^And it sounds!somehow it sounds察院said Mr Skimpole察 like a

small sum。 ̄

The strange man said nothing察but made another snort。 It was

such a powerful one察that it seemed quite to lift him out of his seat。

^Mr Skimpole察院said Richard to me察 has a delicacy in applying

to my cousin Jarndyce察 because he has lately!I think察 sir察 I

understood you that you had lately! ̄

    ^Oh察 yes 院 returned Mr Skimpole察 smiling。 ^Though I forgot

how much it was察and when it was。 Jarndyce would readily do it

again察 but I have the epicure´like feeling that I would prefer a

novelty in help察that I would rather察院and he looked at Richard and

me察 develop generosity in a new soil察 and in a new form of

flower。 ̄

^What do you think will be best察 Miss Summerson 院 said

Richard察aside。

I ventured to inquire generally察 before replying察 what would

happen if the money were not produced。

^Jail察院 said the strange man察 coolly putting his handkerchief

into his hat察which was on the floor at his feet。 ^Or Coavinses。 ̄

    ^May I ask察sir察what is! ̄

    ^Coavinses拭院said the strange man。 ^A ¨ouse。 ̄

Richard and I looked at one another again。 It was a most

singular thing that the arrest was our embarrassment察and not Mr

Skimpole¨s。 He observed us with a genial interest察 but there

seemed察if I may venture on such a contradiction察nothing selfish

in it。 He had entirely washed his hands of the difficulty察and it had

become ours。

^I thought察院 he suggested察 as if good´naturedly to help us out察

^that being parties in a chancery suit concerning as people say a

large amount of property察Mr Richard察or his beautiful cousin察or

both察could sign something察or make over something察or give some

sort of undertaking察 or pledge察 or bond拭 I don¨t know what the

business name of it may be察 but I suppose there is some

instrument within their power that would settle this拭院

^Not a bit on it察院said the strange man。

    ^Really拭院returned Mr Skimpole。 ^That seems odd察now察to one

who is no judge of these things 院

^Odd or even察院said the stranger察gruffly察 I tell you察not a bit on

it 院

^Keep your temper察 my good fellow察 keep your temper 院 Mr

Skimpole gently reasoned with him察as he made a little drawing of

his head on the flyleaf of a book。 ^Don¨t be ruffled by your

occupation。 We can separate you from your office察we can separate

the individual from the pursuit。 We are not so prejudiced as to

suppose that in private life you are otherwise than a very

estimable man察with a great deal of poetry in your nature察of which

you may not be conscious。 ̄

The stranger only answered with another violent snort察

whether in acceptance of the poetry´tribute察 or in disdainful

rejection of it察he did not express to me。

^Now察 my dear Miss Summerson察 and my dear Mr Richard察院

said Mr Skimpole察gaily察innocently察and confidingly察as he looked

at his drawing with his head on one side察 here you see me utterly

incapable of helping myself察and
