boy left Bleak House察 and that you accepted a present on that

occasion。 I have not mentioned it to my Guardian察 for I fear it

would hurt him unnecessarily察 but I may say to you that I was

much surprised。 ̄

^No拭 Really surprised察 my dear Miss Summerson拭院 he

returned察inquiringly察raising his pleasant eyebrows。

    ^Greatly surprised。 ̄

He thought about it for a little while察 with a highly agreeable

and whimsical expression of face察then quite gave it up察and said察

in his most engaging manner此

    ^You know what a child I am。 Why surprised拭院

I was reluctant to enter minutely into that question察but as he

begged I would察for he was really curious to know察I gave him to

understand察 in the gentlest words I could use察 that his conduct

seemed to involve a disregard of several moral obligations。 He was

much amused and interested when he heard this察and said察 No察

really拭院with ingenuous simplicity。 ^You know I don¨t pretend to

be responsible。 I never could do it。 Responsibility is a thing that

has always been above me!or below me察院 said Mr Skimpole察 I

don¨t even know which察but察as I understand the way in which my

dear Miss Summerson always remarkable for her practical good

sense and clearness puts this case察I should imagine it was chiefly

a question of money察do you know拭院

I incautiously gave a qualified assent to this。

^Ah Then you see察院said Mr Skimpole察shaking his head察 I am

hopeless of understanding it。 ̄

I suggested察as I rose to go察 that it was not right to betray my

Guardian¨s confidence for a bribe。

^My dear Miss Summerson察院he returned察with a candid hilarity

that was all his own察 I can¨t be bribed。 ̄

    ^Not by Mr Bucket拭院said I。

    ^No察院 said he。 ^Not by anybody。 I don¨t attach any value to

money。 I don¨t care about it察I don¨t know about it察I don¨t want it察I

don¨t keep it!it goes away from me directly。 How can I be

bribed拭院

I showed that I was of a different opinion察though I had not the

capacity for arguing the question。

^On the contrary察院said Mr Skimpole察 I am exactly the man to

be placed in a superior position察in such a case as that。 I am above

the rest of mankind察 in such a case as that。 I can act with

philosophy察in such a case as that。 I am not warped by prejudices察

as an Italian baby is by bandages。 I am as free as the air。 I feel

myself as far above suspicion as Caesar¨s wife。 ̄

Anything to equal the lightness of his manner察and the playful

impartiality with which he seemed to convince himself察 as he

tossed the matter about like a ball of feathers察 was surely never

seen in anybody else

^Observe the case察 my dear Miss Summerson。 Here is a boy

received into the house and put to bed察 in a state that I strongly

object to。 The boy being in bed察a man arrives!like the house that

Jack built。 Here is the man who demands the boy who is received

into the house and put to bed in a state that I strongly object to。

Here is a banknote produced by the man who demands the boy

who is received into the house and put to bed in a state that I

strongly object to。 Here is the Skimpole who accepts the banknote

produced by the man who demands the boy who is received into

the house and put to bed in a state that I strongly object to。 Those

are the facts。 Very well。 Should the Skimpole have refused the

note拭Why should the Skimpole have refused the note拭Skimpole

protests to Bucket察 what¨s this for拭I don¨t understand it察 it is of

no use to me察 take it away。¨ Bucket still entreats Skimpole to

accept it。 Are there reasons why Skimpole察not being warped by

prejudices察should accept it拭Yes。 Skimpole察perceives them。 What

are they拭Skimpole reasons with himself察this is a tamed察lynx察an

active police officer察 an intelligent man察 a person of a peculiarly

directed energy and great subtlety both of conception and

execution察 who discovers our friends and enemies for us when

they run away察recovers our property for us when we are robbed察

avenges us comfortably when were are murdered。 This active

police officer and intelligent man has acquired察in the exercise of

his art察a strong faith in money察he finds it very useful to him察and

he makes it very useful to society。 Shall I shake that faith in

Bucket察because I want it myself察shall I deliberately blunt one of

Bucket¨s weapons察 shall I possibly paralyse Bucket察 in his next

detective operation拭And again。 If it is blameable in Skimpole to

take the note察 it is blameable in Bucket to offer the note!much

more blameable in Bucket察because he is the knowing man。 Now察

Skimpole wishes to think well of Bucket察 Skimpole deems it

essential察in its little place察to the general cohesion of things察that

he should think well of Bucket。 The State expressly asks him to

trust to Bucket。 And he does。 And that¨s all he does 院

I had nothing to offer in reply to this exposition察and therefore

took my leave。 Mr Skimpole察 however察 who was in excellent

spirits察 would not hear of my returning home attended only by

^Little Coavinses察院and accompanied me himself。 He entertained

me察 on the way察 with a variety of delightful conversation察 and

assured me察 at parting察 that he should never forget the fine tact

with which I had found that out for him about our young friends。

As it so happened that I never saw Mr Skimpole again察I may at

once finish what I know of his history。 A coolness arose between

him and my Guardian察 based chiefly on the foregoing grounds察

and on his having heartlessly disregarded my Guardian¨s

entreaties as we afterwards learned from Ada in reference to

Richard。 His being heavily in my Guardian¨s debt察had nothing to

do with their separation。 He died some five years afterwards察and

left a diary behind him察 with letters and other materials towards

his Life察 which was published察 and which showed him to have

been the victim of a combination on the part of mankind against

an amiable child。 It was considered very pleasant reading察 but I

never read more of it myself than the sentence on which I chanced
