All the mirrors in the house are brought into action now此many
of them after a long blank。 They reflect handsome faces察simpering

pass a January week or two at Chesney Wold察 and which the
fashionable intelligence察 a mighty hunter before the Lord察 hunts
with a keen scent察from their breaking cover at the Court of Saint
James¨s to their being run down to Death。 The place in
Lincolnshire is all alive。 By day察guns and voices are heard ringing
in the woods察 horsemen and carriages enliven the park roads察
servants and hangers´on pervade the Village and the Dedlock
Arms。 Seen by night察from distant openings in the trees察the row of
windows in the long drawing´room察 where my Lady¨s picture
hangs over the great chimney´piece察is like a row of jewels set in a
black frame。 On Sunday察the chill little church is almost warmed
by so much gallant company察 and the general flavour of the
Dedlock dust is quenched in delicate perfumes。
The brilliant and distinguished circle comprehends within it察no
contracted amount of education察 sense察 courage察 honour察 beauty察
and virtue。 Yet there is something a little wrong about it察 in
despite of its immense advantages。 What can it be拭
Dandyism拭 There is no King George the Fourth now more¨s
the pity。 to set the dandy fashion察 there are no clear´starched
jack´towel neckcloths察 no short´waisted coats察 no false calves察 no
stays。 There are no caricatures察 now察 of effeminate Exquisites so
arrayed察swooning in opera boxes with excess of delight察and being
revived by other dainty creatures察 poking long´necked scent´
bottles at their noses。 There is no beau whom it takes four men at
once to shake into his buckskins察 or who goes to see all the
executions察 or who is troubled with the self´reproach of having
once consumed a pea。 But is there Dandyism in the brilliant and
distinguished circle notwithstanding察 Dandyism of a more
mischievous sort察that has got below the surface and is doing less

harmless things than jack´towelling itself and stopping its own
digestion察to which no rational person need particularly object拭
Why察 yes。 It cannot be disguised。 There are察 at Chesney Wold
this January week察 some ladies and gentlemen of the newest
fashion察 who have set up a Dandyism!in Religion察 for instance。
Who察in mere lackadaisical want of an emotion察have agreed upon
a little dandy talk about the Vulgar wanting faith in things in
general察 meaning察 in the things that have been tried and found
wanting察as though a low fellow should unaccountably lose faith in
a bad shilling察 after finding it out Who would make the Vulgar
very picturesque and faithful察by putting back the hands upon the
Clock of Time察and cancelling a few hundred years of history。
There are also ladies and gentlemen of another fashion察not so
new察but very elegant察who have agreed to put a smooth glaze on
the world察and to keep down all its realities。 For whom everything
must be languid and pretty。 Who have found out the perpetual
stoppage。 Who are to rejoice at nothing察and be sorry for nothing。
Who are not to be disturbed by ideas。 On whom even the Fine
Arts察 attending in powder and walking backward like the Lord
Chamberlain察must array themselves in the milliners¨ and tailors¨
patterns of past generations察and be particularly careful not to be
in earnest察or to receive any impress from the moving age。
Then there is my Lord Boodle察of considerable reputation with
his party who has known what office is察and who tells Sir Leicester
Dedlock with much gravity察 after dinner察 that he really does not
see to what the present age is tending。 A debate is not what a
debate used to be察 the House is not what the House used to be察
even a Cabinet is not what it formerly was。 He perceives with
astonishment察 that supposing the present Government to be

overthrown察the limited choice of the Crown察in the formation of a
new Ministry察 would lie between Lord Coodle and Sir Thomas
Doodle!supposing it to be impossible for the Duke of Foodle to
act with Goodle察 which may be assumed to be the case in
consequence of the breach arising out of that affair with Hoodle。
Then察 giving the Home Department and the Leadership of the
House of Commons to Joodle察 the Exchequer to Koodle察 the
Colonies to Loodle察 and the Foreign Office to Moodle察 what are
you to do with Noodle拭You can¨t offer him the Presidency of the
Council察 that is reserved for Poodle。 You can¨t put him in the
Woods and Forests察that is hardly good enough for Quoodle。 What
follows拭That the country is shipwrecked察lost察and gone to pieces
as is made manifest to the patriotism of Sir Leicester Dedlock察
because you can¨t provide for Noodle
On the other hand察the Right Honourable William Buffy察M。P。察
contends across the table with some one else察that the shipwreck
of the country!about which there is no doubt察 it is only the
manner of it that is in question!is attributable to Cuffy。 If you had
done with Cuffy what you ought to have done when he first came
into Parliament察and had prevented him from going over to Duffy察
you would have got him into an alliance with Fuffy察 you would
have had with you the weight attaching as a smart debater to
Guffy察 you would have brought to bear upon the elections the
wealth of Huffy察 you would have got in for three counties Juffy察
Kuffy察 and Luffy察 and you would have strengthened your
administration by the official knowledge and the business habits of
Muffy。 All this察instead of being as you now are察dependent on the
mere caprice of Puffy
As to this point察 and as to some minor topics察 there are

differences of opinion察but it is perfectly clear to the brilliant and
distinguished circle察 all round察 that nobody is in question but
Boodle and his retinue察and Buffy and his retinue。 These are the
