talking to myself for a little while though there was not much of
it察and Ada was soon quiet and happy。
^Do you think my cousin John knows察dear Dame Durden拭院she
asked。
^Unless my cousin John is blind察my pet察院said I察 I should think
my cousin John knows pretty well as much as we know。 ̄
^We want to speak to him before Richard goes察院 said Ada察
timidly察 and we wanted you to advise us察 and to tell him so。
Perhaps you wouldn¨t mind Richard¨s coming in察Dame Durden拭院
^O Richard is outside察is he察my dear拭院said I。
^I am not quite certain察院returned Ada察with a bashful simplicity
that would have won my heart察if she had not won it long before察
^but I think he¨s waiting at the door。 ̄
There he was of course。 They brought a chair on either side of
me察and put me between them察and really seemed to have fallen in
love with me察instead of one another察they were so confiding察and
so trustful察and so fond of me。 They went on in their own wild way
for a little while!I never stopped them察 I enjoyed it too much
myself!and then we gradually fell to considering how young they
were察and how there must be a lapse of several years before this
early love could come to anything察 and how it could come to
happiness only if it were real and lasting察and inspired them with a
steady resolution to do their duty to each other察 with constancy察
fortitude察 and perseverance此 each always for the other¨s sake。
Well Richard said that he would work his fingers to the bone for
Ada察and Ada said that she would work her fingers to the bone for
Richard察 and they called me all sorts of endearing and sensible
names察 and we sat there察 advising and talking察 half the night。
Finally before we parted察I gave them my promise to speak to their

cousin John tomorrow。
So察 when tomorrow came察 I went to my Guardian after
breakfast察 in the room that was our town substitute for the
Growlery察and told him that I had it in trust to tell him something。
^Well察little woman察院said he察shutting up his book察 if you have
accepted the trust察there can be no harm in it。 ̄
^I hope not察Guardian察院said I。 ^I can guarantee that there is no
secrecy in it。 For it only happened yesterday。 ̄
^Aye拭And what is it察Esther拭院
^Guardian察院 said I察 you remember the happy night when we
first came down to Bleak House拭 When Ada was singing in the
dark room拭院
I wished to recall to his remembrance the look he had given me
then。 Unless I am much mistaken察I saw that I did so。
^Because察院said I察with a little hesitation。
^Yes察my dear 院said he。 ^Don¨t hurry。 ̄
^Because察院 said I察 Ada and Richard have fallen in love。 And
have told each other so。 ̄
^Already 院cried my Guardian察quite astonished。
^Yes 院 said I察 and to tell you the truth察 Guardian察 I rather
expected it。 ̄
^The deuce you did 院said he。
He sat considering for a minute or two察with his smile at once so
handsome and so kind察 upon his changing face察 and then
requested me to let them know that he wished to see them。 When
they came he encircled Ada with one arm察in his fatherly way察and
addressed himself to Richard with a cheerful gravity。
^Rick察院 said Mr Jarndyce察 I am glad to have won your
confidence。 I hope to preserve it。 When I contemplated these

relations between us four which have so brightened my life察and so
invested it with new interest and pleasures察 I certainly did
contemplate察afar off察the possibility of you and your pretty cousin
here don¨t be shy察Ada察don¨t be shy察my dear。 being in a mind to
go through life together。 I saw察and do see察many reasons to make
it desirable。 But that was afar off察Rick察afar off 院
^We look afar off察sir察院returned Richard。
^Well 院 said Mr Jarndyce。 ^That¨s rational。 Now察 hear me察my
dears I might tell you that you don¨t know your own minds yet察
that a thousand things may happen to divert you from one
another察that it is well this chain of flowers you have taken up is
very easily broken察or it might become a chain of lead。 But I will
not do that。 Such wisdom will come soon enough察I dare say察if it is
to come at all。 I will assume that察a few years hence察you will be in
your hearts to one another察 what you are today。 All I say before
speaking to you according to that assumption is察 if you do
change!if you do come to find that you are more common´place
cousins to each other as man and woman察 than you were as boy
and girl your manhood will excuse me察Rick。!don¨t be ashamed
still to confide in me察 for there will be nothing monstrous or
uncommon in it。 I am only your friend and distant kinsman。 I have
no power over you whatever。 But I wish and hope to retain your
confidence察if I do nothing to forfeit it。 ̄
^I am very sure察sir察院returned Richard察 that I speak for Ada察
too察when I say that you have the strongest power over us both!
rooted in respect察 gratitude察 and affection!strengthening every
day。 ̄
^Dear Cousin John察院 said Ada察 on his shoulder察 my father¨s
place can never be empty again。 All the love and duty I could ever

have rendered to him察is transferred to you。 ̄
^Come 院said Mr Jarndyce。 ^Now for our assumption。 Now we
lift our eyes up察and look hopefully at the distance Rick察the world
is before you察and it is most probable that as you enter it察so it will
receive you。 Trust in nothing but in Providence and your own
efforts。 Never separate the two察 like the heathen waggoner。
Constancy in love is a good thing察 but it means nothing察 and is
nothing察without constancy in every kind of effort。 If you had the
abilities of all the great men察 past and present察 you could do
nothing well察without sincerely meaning it察and setting about it。 If
you entertain the supposition that any real success察in great things
or in small察ever was or could be察ever will or can be察wrested from
Fortune by fits and starts察 leave that wrong idea here察 or leave
your cousin Ada here。 ̄
^I will leave it here察sir察院replied Richard察smiling察 if I brought
it here just now but I hope I did not察and will work my way on to
my cousin Ada in the hopeful distance。 ̄
^Right 院said Mr Jarndyce。 ^If you are not to make her happy察
why should you pursue her拭院
