believe she likes me。 If you could see young Mr Turveydrop察I am

sure you would think well of him!at least察I am sure you couldn¨t

possibly think any ill of him。 I am going there now察for my lesson。 I

couldn¨t ask you to go with me察 Miss Summerson察 but if you

would察院 said Caddy察 who had said all this察 earnestly and

tremblingly察 I should be very glad!very glad。 ̄

It happened that we had arranged with my Guardian to go to

Miss Flite¨s that day。 We had told him of our former visit察and our

account had interested him察but something had always happened

to prevent our going there again。 As I trusted that I might have

sufficient influence with Miss Jellyby to prevent her taking any

very rash step察if I fully accepted the confidence she was so willing

to place in me察 poor girl察 I proposed that she and I and Peepy

should go to the Academy察and afterwards meet my Guardian and

Ada at Miss Flite¨s!whose name I now learnt for the first time。

This was on condition that Miss Jellyby and Peepy should come

back with us to dinner。 The last article of the agreement being

joyfully acceded to by both察we smartened Peepy up a little察with

the assistance of a few pins察 some soap and water察 and a

hairbrush察 and went out此 bending our steps towards Newman

Street察which was very near。

I found the Academy established in a sufficiently dingy house at

the corner of an archway察with busts in all the staircase windows。

In the same house there were also established察as I gathered from

the plates on the door察 a drawing´master察 a coal´merchant there

was察certainly察no room for his coals察and a lithographic artist。 On

the plate which察 in size and situation察 took precedence of all the

rest察I read察Mr TURVEYDROP。 The door was open察and the hall

was blocked up by a grand piano察 a harp察 and several other

musical instruments in cases察 all in progress of removal察 and all

looking rakish in the daylight。 Miss Jellyby informed me that the

Academy had been lent察last night察for a concert。

We went upstairs!it had been quite a fine house once察when it

was anybody¨s business to keep it clean and fresh察 and nobody¨s

business to smoke in it all day!and into Mr Turveydrop¨s great

room察 which was built out into a mews at the back察 and was

lighted by a skylight。 It was a bare察resounding room察smelling of

stables察with cane forms along the walls察and the walls ornamented

at regular intervals with painted lyres察 and little cut´glass

branches for candles察 which seemed to be shedding their old´

fashioned drops as other branches might shed autumn leaves。

Several young lady pupils察ranging from thirteen or fourteen years

of age to two or three and twenty察 were assembled察 and I was

looking among them for their instructor察 when Caddy察 pinching

my arm察 repeated the ceremony of introduction。 ^Miss

Summerson察Mr Prince Turveydrop 院

I curtseyed to a little blue´eyed fair man of youthful

appearance察with flaxen hair parted in the middle察and curling at

the ends all round his head。 He had a little fiddle察which we used

to call at school a kit察under his left arm察and its little bow in the

same band。 His little dancing shoes were particularly diminutive察

and he had a little innocent察 feminine manner察 which not only

appealed to me in an amiable way察 but made this singular effect

upon me此 that I received the impression that he was like his

mother察 and that his mother had not been much considered or

well used。 ̄

^I am very happy to see Miss Jellyby¨s friend察院he said察bowing

low to me。 ^I began to fear察院with timid tenderness察 as it was past

the usual time察that Miss Jellyby was not coming。 ̄

^I beg you will have the goodness to attribute that to me察who

have detained her察and to receive my excuses察sir察院said I。

    ^O dear 院said he。

^And pray察院I entreated察 do not allow me to be the cause of any

more delay。 ̄

With that apology I withdrew to a seat between Peepy who察

being well used to it察had already climbed into a corner place and

an old lady of a censorious countenance察whose two nieces were in

the class察and who was very indignant with Peepy¨s boots。 Prince

Turveydrop then tinkled the strings of his kit with his fingers察and

the young ladies stood up to dance。 Just then察there appeared from

a side´door察 old Mr Turveydrop察 in the full lustre of his

Deportment。

He was a fat old gentleman with a false complexion察false teeth察

false whiskers察and a wig。 He had a fur collar察and he had a padded

breast to his coat察which only wanted a star or a broad blue ribbon

to be complete。 He was pinched in察 and swelled out察 and got up察

and strapped down察 as much as he could possibly bear。 He had

such a neckcloth on puffing his very eyes out of their natural

shape察 and his chin and even his ears so sunk into it察 that it

seemed as though he must inevitably double up察 if it were cast

loose。 He had察 under his arm察 a hat of great size and weight察

shelving downward from the crown to the brim察and in his hand a

pair of white gloves察with which he flapped it察as he stood poised

on one leg察in a high´shouldered察round´elbowed state of elegance

not to be surpassed。 He had a cane察he had an eyeglass察he had a

snuff´box察he had rings察he had wristbands察he had everything but

any touch of nature察he was not like youth察he was not like age察he

was like nothing in the world but a model of Deportment。

    ^Father A visitor。 Miss Jellyby¨s friend察Miss Summerson。 ̄

^Distinguished察院 said Mr Turveydrop察 by Miss Summerson¨s

presence。 ̄ As he bowed to me in that tight state察I almost believe I

saw creases come into the whites of his eyes。

^My father察院said the son察aside to me察 with quite an affecting

belief in him察 is a celebrated character。 My father is greatly

admired。 ̄

^Go on察Prince Go on 院said Mr Turveydrop察standing with his

back to the fire察 and waving his gloves condescendingly。 ^Go on察

my son 院

At this command察 or by this gracious permission察 the lesson

went on。 Prince Turveydrop察 sometimes察 played the kit察 dancing察

sometimes played the piano察 standing此 sometimes hummed the
