that awful past察marking the march of time察recording the revolutions of

the Sun in his orbit of 25920 years察and relating with wonderful accuracy

the climatic changes察 in their latitudes察 which took place with each

revolution of the Sun and corresponding motion of the Earth's pole of less

than four degrees。 All the greater myths of the dim past were formulated to

express cosmic time察solar and polar motion察and the phenomena resulting

therefrom。 These monuments of antiquity prove that察the ancients knew a

great deal more of the movements of heavenly bodies and of our planet

than modern astronomers credit them with。

Madame Blavatsky察in her ;Secret Doctrine察─seriously states that all

these monstrous forms are the types of actual察 once living physical

embodiments察 and察 with apparent sincerity察 asserts that the Adepts teach

such insane superstitions。

Such察however察is not the case察neither is there anything true察or even

approaching the truth察in the cosmogony given in the work in question。

And察 lastly察 we have but one more aspect of the grand old Astro´

Mythos to present to your notice。 This aspect reveals the whole of the

ancient classification of WORK and LABOR察and gives us a clear insight

into the original designs察or pictorial representations察of the twelve signs

and the twelve months of the year。 It also clearly explains many things

which are to´day attributed to superstitious paganism。

As each month possesses its own peculiar season察so are察or were察the

various labors of the husbandman察and those of pastoral pursuits察altered

and diverted。 Each month察then察bad a symbol which denoted the physical

characteristics of climate and the temporal characteristics of work。 As the

Sun entered the sign察 so the temple rites varied in honor of the labors

performed察and the symbol thus became the object of outward veneration

and worship。 So we see that the twelve signs察 and principally the four

cardinal ones察 became Deities察 and the symbols sacred察 but in reality察 it

was the same Sun to which homage was paid。

There is a large sphere of study in this direction察as察of course察each

climate varied the symbol to suit its requirements。 In Egypt there were

three months when the land was overflowed with water察hence察they had

only nine working months out of doors察and from this fact sprang the Nine

Muses察while the Three Sirens represented the three months of inactivity

in work察or three months of pleasure and festivity。

Mackey tells us that the great leviathan mentioned in the Book of job

was the river Nile。

In nearly all mythologies察 we find that the gods assembled on some

high mountain to take counsel。 The Olympus of the Greeks and Mount

Zion of the Hebrew Bible mean the same察the Pole´Star察and there察on the

pictured planisphere察sits Cephus察the mighty Jove察with one foot on the

Pole´Star and all the gods gathered below him。 The Pole´Star is the

symbol of the highest heaven。

With this we close察 leaving the endless ramifications of this deeply

                             CHAPTER VI。

                                      SYMBOLISM

At this point of our study it is necessary to make a halt察and察before

proceeding further察to attempt to formulate and realize that察which察so far察

we have been pursuing。

First察 then察 we have passed in review the Zodiac察 and then the

constellations。 From this we mentally surveyed both Astro´Theology and

Astro´Mythology察and now察it is our first duty to realize these in their real

significance察and this consists in a clear comprehension of the Grand Law

of Correspondences。

What is this law拭It is the law of symbolism察and symbolism察rightly

understood察 is the one Divine language of Mother Nature察 a language

wherein all can read察a language that defies the united efforts of both time

and space to obliterate it察for symbolism will be the language of Nature as

long as spirit expresses itself to the Divine soul of man。

No matter where we turn nor where we look察there is spread out to our

view a vast panorama of symbolic forms for us to read。 In whatever form察

angle察 or color they present themselves察 the true student of Nature can

interpret and understand their symbolic language aright。 It has been by the

personification of Nature's symbols察that man has become ignorant of their

language。 There is no form察 sound察 nor color but what has its laws of

expression察and only a perfect knowledge of symbolism will enable man

to know the law察power察and meaning察lying behind such manifestations。

The law of expression is exact察and as unalterable as Deity Himself。 The

physical senses cannot vibrate to these interior forces察and through them察

comprehend their law。 The physical senses vibrate to the spirit's

expression察not to the powers察forces察and laws察which brought them into

objective existence。

Countless numbers of mystics察 if such they deserve to be called察

among present´day students察 speak and write very learnedly upon the

;Law of Correspondence察─ and few察 if any察 of them really understand or

know anything at all of that law。 The intellect alone cannot solve the

                                            59

                                     THE LIGHT OF EGYPT

problems of this law。 It cannot grasp the true察 interior and spiritual

meaning察except in just so far as intellect is capable of externalizing them。

The inmost spiritual truths察 that cannot be demonstrated to the outward

senses察 never have察 nor never will察 appeal to any one who has not the

interior ability to comprehend them。

There was a time when men ruled by pure intellect察 without its

accompanying other half察 intuition此 they were looked upon as

monstrosities。 This state of purely intellectual development has been

brought about by the positive察 masculine principle察 reason察 absorbing its

counterpart察 the intuition察 the feminine portion察 and the result察 by

correspondence察is as fatal as upon the interior plane察where the positive察

masculine soul denies the existence of his mate察 thus setting upon his

throne察only a portion of himself as his idol察and then察reasons himself into

the belief that he is complete。 Love has been cast out察 ignored and

forgotten until at last she departs察leaving a vacancy察that eternity cannot

fill。

This is somewhat similar to their illusive Devachan察an ideal察a mere

mystical sentiment to gush over察 but a some
