who cheats and deceives the people。 A mason is the honorable designation
of a builder察 who works in stone察 metaphysically察 a member of a semi´

who proclaim fraternity and universal brotherhood theoretically and
practice the reverse in reality察a man who apes the Egyptian Mason察knows
nothing in reality of Hiram察his master察who knows nothing of the starry
Solomon or his mystic temple in the heavens察which Hiram built察and who
misconceives the import of the three villains察 or assassins察 and who察
further察knows nothing of that wonderful sprig of myrtlein short察a Free
Mason察speaking generally察is a man who delights in ideals察social equality察
secret fraternity察 and plays at mysticism察 who parades on the Masonic
stage and enacts a role he does not understand。 The first meaning察that of a
builder察 is the most correct。 Lastly察 the imagination is the exercise of
mental imagerythe picturings of silent thought。
And now we will proceed BACKWARDS。 Imagination is from the
word ;image察─a form察a picture察and has descended to us from the Latin
;imago察─which察in its turn察was derived from the old Semitic root察 mag。;
Mason comes to us from the Latin ;mass察─ which means to mould and
form察i。e。察to build察and the word ;mass察─through various transformations察
was also derived from the root´word ;mag。; Consequently察 originally察
there was but little difference in the ancient idea of building pictures in the
mind and erecting the mental idea externally in stone。 It is from this fact察
that察 we have to´day Mental Masons察 a la the secret orders察 and stone
masons察 who labor for wages。 The Mental Masons have merely lost the
knowledge of their art。 They should察 by rights察 be as active and
correspondingly useful to´day as their more physical brothers察the masons
of stone。
This art would never have fallen into disgrace and disuse察if their daily
bread察 or material accumulations察 had depended upon their efforts in
building up the mental察moral察and spiritual attainments察of each other察and
bringing their knowledge into more external use察by making the material
edifice察the physical body察a purer and more fitting temple察for the Divine
soul。
Magic comes from the Latin ;magi; and the Greek word ;magos察─
which means wise察 learned in the mysteries察 and was the synonym of
wisdom。 The initiated philosopher察the priest察and the wise men察are all of
them included in the ;magi。; Again察 tracing this word to its remote

ancestor察 we find it terminating in the same Semitic root察 mag察─ but of
this strange root no one was able to say much察 except that it seemed to
belong to the Assyrian branch of the great Semitic race。 But quite recently察
thanks to our scientific explorers and archaeologists察 versed in the
mysterious meaning of cuniform inscription察 Assyrian scholars now
inform us that they have found the hoary察primitive original of it察of magic察
magi and imago察etc。 It is from an old Akkadian word察 imga察─meaning
wise察holy察 and learned察 and was used as the distinguishing title of their
wisest sages察 priests察 and philosophers察 who察 as may be supposed察
gradually formed a peculiar caste察 which merged into the ruling priestly
order。 The Semites察who succeeded the old Akkadian race in the valley of
the Euphrates察as a mere matter of verbal convenience察transformed many
of the old Akkadian words to suit their own articulation察 and ;imga;
became ;mag察─and thus ;magi。; THE BLEND between the Semetic and
the older Akkadian race察 produced察by fusion of racial blood察 the famed
Chaldeans。 So that we see how old are the words which many of us daily
use察but with different meaning。 Verily察it makes one feel察when be thinks
of magic and its origin察 as though he were quite nearly related to the
people who honored King Sargon察 the Wise察 the earthly original of the
mystic Solomon of Biblical tradition。 The term Wand is an old Saxon
word察which primarily signifies to set in motion察to move。 From this we
derive our word wander察 i。e。察 to roam察 and wandering察 i。e。察 moving and
continually restless。
We have now the original察therefore real察meaning of the words Magic
Wand察thus an object that sets in motion the powers of the magician察and
the magician察an Initiate of the sacred ritesA MASTER OF WISDOM察
possessing all the resources that enable him TO BUILD mould察and form察
to create in fact察by virtue of his knowledge of the secret powers of mental
imagery and the potential use of his own imagination。 He is both Mental
Mason and learned philosopher。
The student may doubtless ask察why all this care and labor regarding
mere definitions拭 We reply that察 it is because察 the real meaning of the
words we have purposely selected for the title of our studies are察 in
themselves察 a far better revelation than we could possibly have written。

Originally察 ideas and words were related as absolute expressions or
correspondences察of each other。 This is not so now。 As the different races
became interblended察the purity of both language and morals retrograded察
and the people grew more to the external。 The intuitions and spirit were
compelled to retreat察giving place to only the intellectual and mental。 The
blending of the languages gave birth to many words wherein different
meanings were transmitted察 hence察 the trouble arising to´day over the
numerous interpretations of a single word。
Hybrid races have no such thing as a pure language。 Their ideas and
language察 like their blood察 is badly mixed up察 confusing察 and
unsatisfactory察so far as the real meaning of the words are concerned。 For
this very reason we find so many different meanings for the same word察
and also for this reason察 we cannot formulate a legal enactment in the
Anglo´Saxon tongue that察 a learned lawyer察 versed in this senseless
jugglery of words察 cannot demonstrate察 to the satisfaction of the courts察
means something the very opposite of the real intentions the spirit
which the framers thereof察intended it to convey。 Anciently察it required no
artful cunning of the lawyer to interpret the laws。 The words had only one
simple and obvious meaning。 If a language could be so constructed to´day察
and the antiquated precedents of the courts annihilated察 the legal
profession would be exterminated inside of twelve months察 and an
affliction removed from the people。
The philosophy of the Magic Wand is this。 It is a magnetic察 electric
conductor for the magician's will。 It directs the flow
