The blessing fell upon her soul察Her angel by her side Knew that the
hour of peace was come察 Her soul was purified此The shadows fell from
roof and arch察Dim was the incensed air ´ But Peace went with her as she
left The sacred Presence there

VERSE此 THE WAYSIDE INN
A little past the village The Inn stood察 low and white察 Green shady
trees behind it察And an orchard on the right察Where over the green paling
The red´cheeked apples hung察As if to watch how wearily The sign´board
creaked and swung。
The heavy´laden branches察Over the road hung low察Reflected fruit or
blossom From the wayside well below察 Where children察 drawing water察
Looked up and paused to see察Amid the apple´branches察A purple Judas
Tree。
The road stretched winding onward For many a weary mile ´ So dusty
foot´sore wanderers Would pause and rest awhile察 And panting horses
halted察 And travellers loved to tell The quiet of the wayside inn察 The
orchard察and the well。
Here Maurice dwelt察and often The sunburnt boy would stand Gazing
upon the distance察And shading with his hand His eyes察 while watching
vainly For travellers察who might need His aid to loose the bridle察And tend
the weary steed。
And once the boy remembered That morning察many a day ´ The dew
lay on the hawthorn察 The bird sang on the spray A train of horsemen察
nobler Than he had seen before察 Up from the distance galloped察 And
halted at the door。
Upon a milk´white pony察Fit for a faery queen察Was the loveliest little
damsel His eyes had ever seen此A serving´man was holding The leading
rein察to guide The pony and its mistress察Who cantered by his side。
Her sunny ringlets round her A golden cloud had made察 While her
large hat was keeping Her calm blue eyes in shade察One hand held fast the
silken reins To keep her steed in check察The other pulled his tangled mane察
Or stroked his glossy neck。
And as the boy brought water察 And loosed the rein察 he heard The
sweetest voice that thanked him In one low gentle word察She turned her
blue eyes from him察 Looked up察 and smiled to see The hanging purple
blossoms Upon the Judas Tree察

And showed it with a gesture察 Half pleading察 half command察Till he
broke the fairest blossom察And laid it in her hand察And she tied it to her
saddle With a ribbon from her hair察While her happy laugh rang gaily察Like
silver on the air。
But the champing steeds were rested ´ The horsemen now spurred on察
And down the dusty highway They vanished and were gone。 Years passed察
and many a traveller Paused at the old inn´door察But the little milk´white
pony And the child returned no more。
Years passed察the apple´branches A deeper shadow shed察And many a
time the Judas Tree察 Blossom and leaf察 lay dead察 When on the loitering
western breeze Came the bells' merry sound察And flowery arches rose察and
flags And banners waved around。
Maurice stood there expectant此 The bridal train would stay Some
moments at the inn´door察The eager watchers say察They comethe cloud
of dust draws near ´ 'Mid all the state and pride察He only sees the golden
hair And blue eyes of the bride。
The same察yet察ah察still fairer察He knew the face once more That bent
above the pony's neck Years past at that inn´door此 Her shy and smiling
eyes looked round察 Unconscious of the place察 Unconscious of the eager
gaze He fixed upon her face。
He plucked a blossom from the tree ´ The Judas Treeand cast Its
purple fragrance towards the Bride察A message from the Past。 The signal
came察 the horses plunged ´ Once more she smiled around此 The purple
blossom in the dust Lay trampled on the ground。
Again the slow years fleeted察Their passage only known By the height
the Passion´flower Around the porch had grown察 And many a passing
traveller Paused at the old inn´door察But the bride察so fair and blooming察
The bride returned no more。
One winter morning察 Maurice察Watching the branches bare察 Rustling
and waving dimly In the grey and misty air察Saw blazoned on a carriage
Once more the well´known shield察The stars and azure fleurs´de´lis Upon
a silver field。
He lookedwas that pale woman察So grave察so worn察so sad察The child察
once young and smiling察 The bride察 once fair and glad拭What grief had

dimmed that glory察 And brought that dark eclipse Upon her blue eyes'
radiance察And paled those trembling lips拭
What memory of past sorrow察What stab of present pain察Brought that
deep look of anguish察That watched the dismal rain察That watched with
the absent spirit That looks察 yet does not see The dead and leafless
branches Upon the Judas Tree。
The slow dark months crept onward Upon their icy way察 'Till April
broke in showers And Spring smiled forth in May察 Upon the apple´
blossoms The sun shone bright again察When slowly up the highway Came
a long funeral train。
The bells toiled slowly察sadly察For a noble spirit fled察Slowly察in pomp
and honour察They bore the quiet dead。 Upon a black´plumed charger One
rode察 who held a shield察Where stars and azure fleurs´de´lis Shone on a
silver field。
'Mid all that homage given To a fluttering heart at rest察 Perhaps an
honest sorrow Dwelt only in one breast。 One by the inn´door standing
Watched with fast´dropping tears The long procession passing察 And
thought of bygone years察
The boyish察silent homage To child and bride unknown察The pitying
tender sorrow Kept in his heart alone察 Now laid upon the coffin With a
purple flower察might be Told to the cold dead sleeper察The rest could only
see A fragrant purple blossom察Plucked from a Judas Tree。

VERSE此 VOICES OF THE PAST
You wonder that my tears should flow In listening to that simple strain察
That those unskilful sounds should fill My soul with joy and pain ´ How
can you tell what thoughts it stirs Within my heart again拭
You wonder why that common phrase察So all unmeaning to your ear察
Should stay me in my merriest mood察And thrill my soul to hear ´ How can
you tell what ancient charm Has made me hold it dear拭
You marvel that I turn away From all those flowers so fair and bright察
And gaze at this poor herb察till tears Arise and dim my sight ´ You cannot
tell how every leaf Breathes of a past delight。
You smile to see me turn and speak With one whose converse you
despise察You do not see the
