To go alone to play。
One day察 out in the meadow With strangers from the town察 Some
secret plan discussing察The men walked up and down。 Yet察now and then
seemed watching察A strange uncertain gleam察That looked like lances 'mid
the trees察That stood below the stream。
At eve they all assembled察Then care and doubt were fled察With jovial
laugh they feasted察The board was nobly spread。 The elder of the village
Rose up察 his glass in hand察 And cried察 We drink the downfall ;Of an
accursed land
;The night is growing darker察 Ere one more day is flown察 Bregenz察
our foemen's stronghold察 Bregenz shall be our own ─The women shrank
in terror察 。Yet Pride察 too察 had her part撮 But one poor Tyrol maiden Felt
death within her heart。
Before her察 stood fair Bregenz察 Once more her towers arose察 What
were the friends beside her拭 Only her country's foes The faces of her
kinsfolk察 The days of childhood flown察 The echoes of her mountains察
Reclaimed her as their own
Nothing she heard around her察。Though shouts rang forth again撮 Gone
were the green Swiss valleys察The pasture察and the plain察Before her eyes
one vision察And in her heart one cry察That said察 Go forth察save Bregenz察
And then察if need be察die ─
With trembling haste and breathless察 With noiseless step she sped察
Horses and weary cattle Were standing in the shed察She loosed the strong
white charger察That fed from out her hand察She mounted察and she turned
his head Towards her native land。
Outout into the darkness ´ Faster察 and still more fast察 The smooth
grass flies behind her察The chestnut wood is past察She looks up察clouds are
heavy此Why is her steed so slow拭 Scarcely the wind beside them察Can
pass them as they go。

;Faster ─ she cries察 Oh faster ─ Eleven the church´bells chime此 Oh
God察─she cries察 help Bregenz察And bring me there in time ─But louder
than bells' ringing察Or lowing of the kine察Grows nearer in the midnight
The rushing of the Rhine。
Shall not the roaring waters Their headlong gallop check拭The steed
draws back in terror察 She leans upon his neck To watch the flowing
darkness察 The bank is high and steep察 One pausehe staggers forward察
And plunges in the deep。
She strives to pierce the blackness察And looser throws the rein察 Her
steed must breast the waters That dash above his mane。 How gallantly察
how nobly察 He struggles through the foam察And seein the far distance察
Shine out the lights of home
Up the steep banks he bears her察And now察they rush again Towards the
heights of Bregenz察 That tower above the plain。 They reach the gate of
Bregenz察 Just as the midnight rings察 And out come serf and soldier To
meet the news she brings。
Bregenz is saved Ere daylight Her battlements are manned察
Defiance greets the army That marches on the land。 And if to deeds heroic
Should endless fame be paid察 Bregenz does well to honour The noble
Tyrol maid。
Three hundred years are vanished察And yet upon the hill An old stone
gateway rises察To do her honour still。 And there察when Bregenz women Sit
spinning in the shade察They see in quaint old carving The Charger and the
Maid。
And when察to guard old Bregenz察By gateway察street察and tower察The
warder paces all night long察And calls each passing hour察 Nine察─ ten察─
;eleven察─he cries aloud察And then Oh crown of Fame。 When midnight
pauses in the skies察He calls the maiden's name

VERSE此 A FAREWELL
Farewell察 oh dream of mine I dare not stay察The hour is come察 and
time Will not delay此Pleasant and dear to me Wilt thou remain察No future
hour Brings thee again。
She stands察the Future dim察And draws me on察And shows me dearer
joys ´ But thou art gone Treasures and Hopes more fair察Bears she for me察
And yet I linger察Oh dream察with thee
Other and brighter days察Perhaps she brings察Deeper and holier songs察
Perchance she sings察 But thou and I察 fair time察 We too must sever ´ Oh
dream of mine察Farewell for ever

VERSE此 SOWING AND
REAPING
Sow with a generous hand察 Pause not for toil or pain察 Weary not
through the heat of summer察Weary not through the cold spring rain察But
wait till the autumn comes For the sheaves of golden grain。
Scatter the seed察and fear not察A table will be spread察What matter if
you are too weary To eat your hard´earned bread此Sow察while the earth is
broken察For the hungry must be fed。
Sowwhile the seeds are lying In the warm earth's bosom deep察And
your warm tears fall upon it ´ They will stir in their quiet sleep察And the
green blades rise the quicker察Perchance察for the tears you weep。
Then sowfor the hours are fleeting察And the seed must fall to´day察
And care not what hands shall reap it察Or if you shall have passed away
Before the waving corn´fields Shall gladden the sunny day。
Sow察 and look onward察 upward察 Where the starry light appears ´
Where察in spite of the coward's doubting察Or your own heart's trembling
fears察You shall reap in joy the harvest You have sown to´day in tears。

VERSE此 THE STORM
The tempest rages wild and high察The waves lift up their voice and cry
Fierce answers to the angry sky察 Miserere Domine。
Through the black night and driving rain察A ship is struggling察all in
vain To live upon the stormy main察 Miserere Domine。
The thunders roar察the lightnings glare察Vain is it now to strive or dare察
A cry goes up of great despair察 Miserere Domine。
The stormy voices of the main察The moaning wind察 and pelting rain
Beat on the nursery window pane此 Miserere Domine。
Warm curtained was the little bed察 Soft pillowed was the little head察
;The storm will wake the child察─they said此 Miserere Domine。
Cowering among his pillows white He prays察his blue eyes dim with
fright察 Father察save those at sea to´night ─Miserere Domine。
The morning shone all clear and gay察On a ship at anchor in the bay察
And on a little child at play察 Gloria tibi Domine

VERSE此 WORDS
Words are lighter than the cloud´foam Of the restless ocean spray察
Vainer than the trembling shadow That the next hour steals away。 By the
fall of summer raindrops Is the air as deeply stirred察And the rose´leaf that
we tread on Will outlive a word。
Yet察 on the dull silence breaking With a lightning flash察 a Word察
