every year察 。When the brown leaves were falling fast And the long察
lingering autumn passed撮 He would come down to hunt the deer察 With
hound and horse in splendid pride。 The story lasts the live´long year察The
peasant's winter evening fills察When he is gone and they abide In the lone
quiet of their hills。
I longed察too察for the happy night察When察all with torches flaring bright察
The crowding villagers would stand察A patient察eager察waiting band察Until
the signal ran like flame ´ ;They come ─and察slackening speed察they came。
Outriders first察in pomp and state察Pranced on their horses through the gate察
Then the four steeds as black as night察All decked with trappings blue and
white察Drew through the crowd that opened wide察The Earl and Countess
side by side。 The stern grave Earl察with formal smile And glistening eyes
and stately pride察 Could ne'er my childish gaze beguile From the fair
presence by his side。 The lady's soft sad glance察her eyes察。Like stars that
shone in summer skies撮 Her pure white face so calmly bent察With gentle
greetings round her sent Her look察that always seemed to gaze Where the
blue past had closed again Over some happy shipwrecked days察With all

their freight of love and pain此She did not even seem to see The little lord
upon her knee。 And yet he was like angel fair察 With rosy cheeks and
golden hair察That fell on shoulders white as snow此But the blue eyes that
shone below His clustering rings of auburn curls察Were not his mother's察
but the Earl's。
I feared the Earl察 so cold and grim察 I never dared be seen by him。
When through our gate he used to ride察My kinsman Walter bade me hide察
He said he was so stern。 So察when the hunt came past our way察I always
hastened to obey察Until I heard the bugles play The notes of their return。
But shemy very heart´strings stir Whene'er I speak or think of her ´ The
whole wide world could never see A noble lady such as she察 So full of
angel charity。
Strange things of her our neighbours told In the long winter evenings
cold察Around the fire。 They would draw near And speak half´whispering察
as in fear察As if they thought the Earl could hear Their treason 'gainst his
name。 They thought the story that his pride Had stooped to wed a low´
born bride察A stain upon his fame。 Some said 'twas false察there could not
be Such blot on his nobility此 But others vowed that they had heard The
actual story word for word察From one who well my lady knew察And had
declared the story true。
In a far village察 little known察 She dweltso ran the talealone。 A
widowed bride察 yet察 oh so bright察 Shone through the mist of grief察 her
charms察 They said it was the loveliest sight ´ She with her baby in her
arms。 The Earl察 one summer morning察 rode By the sea´shore where she
abode察Again he camethat vision sweet Drew him reluctant to her feet。
Fierce must the struggle in his heart Have been察 between his love and
pride察Until he chose that wondrous part察To ask her to become his bride。
Yet察ere his noble name she bore察He made her vow that nevermore She
would behold her child again察But hide his name and hers from men。 The
trembling promise duly spoken察All links of the low past were broken察And
she arose to take her stand Amid the nobles of the land。 Then all would
wondercould it be That one so lowly born as she察Raised to such height
of bliss察should seem Still living in some weary dream拭'Tis true she bore
with calmest grace The honours of her lofty place察Yet never smiled察 in

peace or joy察Not even to greet her princely boy。 She heard察with face of
white despair察The cannon thunder through the air察That she had given the
Earl an heir。 Nay察even more察。they whispered low察As if they scarce durst
fancy so撮 That察through her lofty wedded life察No word察no tone察betrayed
the wife。 Her look seemed ever in the past察 Never to him it grew more
sweet察The self´same weary glance she cast Upon the grey´hound at her
feet察As upon him察who bade her claim The crowning honour of his name。
This gossip察if old Walter heard察He checked it with a scornful word此I
never durst such tales repeat察He was too serious and discreet To speak of
what his lord might do察Besides察he loved my lady too。 And many a time察I
recollect察They were together in the wood察He察with an air of grave respect察
And earnest look察uncovered stood。 And though their speech I never heard察
Save now and then a louder word撮 I saw he spake as none but one She
loved and trusted察durst have done察For oft I watched them in the shade
That the close forest branches made察Till slanting golden sunbeams came
And smote the fir´trees into flame察 A radiant glory round her lit察 Then
down her white robes seemed to flit察 Gilding the brown leaves on the
ground察And all the waving ferns around。 While by some gloomy pine she
leant And he in earnest talk would stand察I saw the tear´drops察as she bent察
Fall on the flowers in her hand。 ´ Strange as it seemed and seems to be察
That one so sad察so cold as she察Could love a little child like me ´ Yet so it
was。 I never heard Such tender words as she would say察And murmurs察
sweeter than a word察Would breathe upon me as I lay。 While I察in smiling
joy察would rest察For hours察my head upon her breast。 Our neighbours said
that none could see In me the common childish charms察。So grave and still
I used to be撮 And yet she held me in her arms察In a fond clasp察so close察so
tight ´ I often dream of it at night。 She bade me tell her allno other My
childish thoughts e'er cared to know此 For II never knew my mother察 I
was an orphan long ago。 And I could all my fancies pour察 That gentle
loving face before。 She liked to hear me tell her all察How that day I had
climbed the tree察To make the largest fir´cones fall察And how one day I
hoped to be A sailor on the deep blue sea ´ She loved to hear it all
Then wondrous things she used to tell察Of the strange dreams that she
had known。 I used to love to hear them well察If only for her sweet low tone察

Sometimes so sad察although I knew That such things never could be true。
One day she told me such a tale It made me grow all cold and pale察The
fearful thing she told Of a poor woman mad and wild Who coined the
life´blood of her child察And tempted by a fiend察had sold The heart out of
her breast for gold。 But察when she saw me frightened seem察She smiled察
and said it was a dream。 When I look back and think of her察 My very
heart´strings seem to stir察How kind察how fair she was察how good I cannot
tell you。 If I could You察too察would love her。 The mere thought Of her
great love for me has brought Tears in my eyes此 though far away察 It
seems as it were yesterday。 And just as when I look on high Through the
blue silence of the sky察Fresh stars shine out察and more and more察Where I
could see so few before
