almost hear the organ Peal alone the arches dim。

As I watched the wreathed pillars察Groves of stately palms arose察And

a group of swarthy Indians Stealing on some sleeping foes。

Stay察 a cataract glancing brightly察 Dashed and sparkled察 and beside

Lay a broken marble monster察Mouth and eyes were staring wide。

Then I saw a maiden wreathing Starry flowers in garlands sweet察Did

she see the fiery serpent That was wrapped about her feet拭

That fell crashing all and vanished察And I saw two armies close ´ I

could almost hear the clarions察And the shouting of the foes。

They were gone察 and lo bright angels察 On a barren mountain wild察

Raised appealing arms to Heaven察Bearing up a little child。

And I gazed察 and gazed察 and slowly Gathered in my eyes sad tears察

And the fiery pictures bore me Back through distant dreams of years。

Once again I tasted sorrow察With past joy was once more gay察Till the

shade had gathered round me ´ And the fire had died away。

              VERSE此 THE SETTLERS

Two stranger youths in the Far West察Beneath the ancient forest trees察

Pausing察 amid their toil to rest察 Spake of their home beyond the seas察

Spake of the hearts that beat so warmly察Of the hearts they loved so well。

In their chilly northern country。 ;Would察─ they cried察 some voice could

tell Where they are察 our own beloved ones ─ They looked up to the

evening sky Half hidden by the giant branches察But heard no angel´voice

reply。 All silent was the quiet evening察Silent were the ancient trees察They

only heard the murmuring song Of the summer breeze察That gently played

among The acacia trees。 And did no warning spirit answer察 Amid the

silence all around察 Before the lowly village altar She thou lovest may be

found察Thou察who trustest still so blindly察Know she stands a smiling bride

Forgetting thee察she turneth kindly To the stranger at her side。 Yes察this day

thou art forgotten察Forgotten察too察thy last farewell察All the vows that she

has spoken察And thy heart has kept so well。 Dream no more of a starry

future察In thy home beyond the seas ─But he only heard the gentle sigh Of

the summer breeze察So softly passing by The acacia trees。

And vainly察too察the other察looking Smiling up through hopeful tears察

Asked in his heart of hearts察 Where is she察She I love these many years拭─

He heard no echo calling faintly此 Lo察 she lieth cold and pale察And her

smile so calm and saintly Heeds not grieving sob or wail ´ Heeds not the

lilies strewn upon her察Pure as she is察and as white察Or the solemn chanting

voices察Or the taper's ghastly light。; But silent still was the ancient forest察

Silent were the gloomy trees察 He only heard the wailing sound Of the

summer breeze察That sadly played around The acacia trees

;I can scarcely hear察─she murmured察 For my heart beats loud and fast察

But surely察in the far察far distance察I can hear a sound at last。; ;It is only

the reapers singing察As they carry home their sheaves察And the evening

breeze has risen察And rustles the dying leaves。;

;Listen there are voices talking。; Calmly still she strove to speak察Yet

her voice grew faint and trembling察And the red flushed in her cheek。 ;It is

only the children playing Below察now their work is done察And they laugh

that their eyes are dazzled By the rays of the setting sun。;

Fainter grew her voice察 and weaker As with anxious eyes she cried察

;Down the avenue of chestnuts察I can hear a horseman ride。; ;It was only

the deer that were feeding In a herd on the clover grass察They were startled察

and fled to the thicket察As they saw the reapers pass。;

Now the night arose in silence察Birds lay in their leafy nest察And the

deer couched in the forest察And the children were at rest此There was only a

sound of weeping From watchers around a bed察 But Rest to the weary

spirit察Peace to the quiet Dead

                         VERSE此 HOURS

When the bright stars came out last night察 And the dew lay on the

flowers察I had a vision of delight ´ A dream of by´gone hours。

Those hours that came and fled so fast察 Of pleasure or of pain察 As

phantoms rose from out the past Before my eyes again。

With beating heart did I behold A train of joyous hours察Lit with the

radiant light of old察And察smiling察crowned with flowers。 And some were

hours of childish sorrow察 A mimicry of pain察 That through their tears

looked for a morrow They knew must smile again。

Those hours of hope that longed for life察And wished their part begun察

And ere the summons to the strife察Dreamed that the field was won。

I knew the echo of their voice察 The starry crowns they wore察 The

vision made my soul rejoice With the old thrill of yore。

I knew the perfume of their flowers察The glorious shining rays Around

these happy smiling hours Were lit in by´gone days。

Oh stay察I criedbright visions察stay察And leave me not forlorn But察

smiling still察they passed away察Like shadows of the morn。

One spirit still remained察and cried察 Thy soul shall ne'er forget ─He

standeth ever by my side ´ The phantom called Regret

But still the spirits rose察 and there Were weary hours of pain察 And

anxious hours of fear and care Bound by an iron chain。

Dim shadows came of lonely hours察That shunned the light of day察And

in the opening smile of flowers Saw only quick decay。

Calm hours that sought the starry skies For heavenly lore were there察

With folded hands and earnest eyes察I knew the hours of prayer。

Stern hours that darkened the sun's light察 Heralds of coming woes察

With trailing wings察before my sight From the dim past arose。

As each dark vision passed and spoke I prayed it to depart此At each

some buried sorrow woke And stirred within my heart。

Until these hours of pain and care Lifted their tearful eyes察 Spread

their dark pinions in the air And passed into the skies。
