         VERSE此 REST AT EVENING

When the weariness of Life is ended察And the task of our long day is

done察And the props察 on which our hearts depended察All have failed or

broken察one by one察Evening and our Sorrow's shadow blended Telling us

that peace is now begun。

How far back will seem the sun's first dawning察And those early mists

so cold and grey Half forgotten even the toil of morning察And the heat

and burthen of the day此Flowers that we were tending察and weeds scorning察

All alike withered and cast away。

Vain will seem the impatient heart察 which waited Toils that gathered

but too quickly round察And the childish joy察so soon elated At the path we

thought none else had found察And the foolish ardour察soon abated By the

storm which cast us to the ground。

Vain those pauses on the road察 each seeming As our final home and

resting´place察And the leaving them察while tears were streaming Of eternal

sorrow down our face察And the hands we held察fond folly dreaming That

no future could their touch efface。

All will then be faded此 night will borrow Stars of light to crown our

perfect rest察And the dim vague memory of faint sorrow Just remain to

show us all was best察Then melt into a divine to´morrow此 Oh察how poor a

day to be so blest

                                                                                     128

             VERSE此 A RETROSPECT

From this fair point of present bliss察Where we together stand察Let me

look back once more察 and trace That long and desert land察 Wherein till

now was cast my lot察and I could live察and thou wert not。

Strange that my heart could beat察 and know Alternate joy and pain察

That suns could roll from east to west察And clouds could pass in rain察And

the slow hours without thee fleet察nor stay their noiseless silver feet。

What had I then拭a hope察that grew Each hour more bright and dear察

The flush upon the eastern skies That showed the sun was near此 Now

night has faded far away察my sun has risen察and it is day。

A dim Ideal of tender grace In my soul reigned supreme察Too noble

and too sweet I thought To live察save in a dream ´ Within thy heart to´day

it lies察and looks on me from thy dear eyes。

Some gentle spiritLove I thought ´ Built many a shrine of pain察

Though each false Idol fell to dust察The worship was not vain察But a faint

radiant shadow cast back from our Love upon the Past。

And Grief察too察held her vigil there察With unrelenting sway Breaking

my cloudy visions down察Throwing my flowers away此 I owe to her fond

care alone that I may now be all thine own。

Fair Joy was thereher fluttering wings At times she strove to raise察

Watching through long and patient nights察 Listening long eager days此 I

know now that her heart and mine were waiting察Love察to welcome thine。

Thus I can read thy name throughout察And察now her task is done察Can

see that even that faded Past Was thine察beloved one察And so rejoice my

Life may be all consecrated察dear察to thee。

                                                                                        130

            VERSE此 TRUE OR FALSE

So you think you love me察do you拭Well察it may be so察But there are

many ways of loving I have learnt to know。 Many ways察and but one true

way察Which is very rare察And the counterfeits look brightest察Though they

will not wear。

Yet they ring察almost察quite truly察Last with care for long察But in time

must break察 may shiver At a touch of wrong此 Having seen what looked

most real Crumble into dust察 Now I chose that test and trial Should

precede my trust。

I have seen a love demanding Time and hope and tears察Chaining all

the past察exacting Bonds from future years察Mind and heart察and joy and

sorrow察Claiming as its fee此That was Love of Self察and never察Never Love

of me

I have seen a love forgetting All above察beyond察Linking every dream

and fancy In a sweeter bond察Counting every hour worthless察Which was

cold or free此 That察perhaps察wasLove of Pleasure察But not Love of me

I have seen a love whose patience Never turned aside察Full of tender察

fond devices察 Constant察 even when tried察 Smallest boons were held as

victories察Drops that swelled the sea此That I think wasLove of Power察But

not Love of me

I have seen a love disdaining Ease and pride and fame察Burning even

its own white pinions Just to feed its flame察 Reigning thus察 supreme察

triumphant察By the soul's decree察That wasLove of Love察I fancy察But not

Love of me

I have heardor dreamt察it may be ´ What Love is when true察How to

test and how to try it察Is the gift of few此These few say or did I dream it殖

That true Love abides In these very things察but always Has a soul besides。

Lives among the false loves察knowing Just their peace and strife此Bears

the self´same look察but always Has an inner life。 Only a true heart can find

it察True as it is true察 Only eyes as clear and tender Look it through and

through。

If it dies察 it will not perish By Time's slow decay察 True Love only

                                                                                       131

comrade察Fateit can defy察Only by its own sword察sometimes Love can

choose to die。

And its grave shall be more noble And more sacred still察Than a throne察

where one less worthy Reigns and rules at will。 Tell me then察do you dare

           VERSE此 GOLDEN WORDS

Some words are played on golden strings察 Which I so highly rate察 I

cannot bear for meaner things Their sound to desecrate。

For every day they are not meet察Or for a careless tone察They are for

rarest察and most sweet察And noblest use alone。

One word is POET此 which is flung So carelessly away察When such as

you and I have sung察We hear it察day by day。

Men pay it for a tender phrase Set in a cadenced rhyme此I keep it as a

crown of praise To crown the kings of time。

And LOVE此 the slightest feelings察 stirred By trivial fancy察 seek

Expression in that golden word They tarnish while they speak。

Nay察 let the heart's slow察 rare decree察 That word in reverence keep

Silence herself should only be More sacred and more deep。

FOR EVER此 men have grown at length To use that word察 to raise

Some feeble protest into strength察Or turn some tender phrase。

It should be said in awe and fear By true heart and strong will察And

burn more brightly year by year察A starry witness st
