A Lay Sung at the Banquet in the Capitol�察�on the
Day Whereon Manius Curius Dentatus�察�a Second
Time Consul�察�Triumphed Over King Pyrrhus and the
Tarentines�察�in the Year of the City CCCCLXXIX
I
Now slain is King Amulius�察 �Of the great Sylvian line�察 �Who
reigned in Alba Longa�察 �On the throne of Aventine。 Slain is the
Ponfiff Camers�察 �Who spake the words of doom�此 �`The children to
the Tiber�察 �The mother to the tomb。''
II
In Alba's lake no fisher His net to´day is flinging�察�On the dark
rind of Alba's oaks To´day no axe is ringing�察�The yoke hangs o'er
the manger�察 �The scythe lies in the hay�此 �Through all the Alban
villages No work is done to´day。
III
And every Alban burgher Hath donned his whitest gown�察�And
every head in Alba Weareth a poplar crown�察�And every Alban door´
post With boughs and flowers is gay�察�For to´day the dead are living�察�
The lost are found to´day。

his hand a broadsword�察 �And on the blade a head A head in an iron

head�察 �Fixed in a ghastly frown The head of King Amulius

On the left side goes Remus�察 �With wrists and fingers red�察�And
in his hand a boar´spear�察 �And on the point a head A wrinkled head

Two and two behind the twins Their trusty comrades go�察�Four
and forty valiant men�察 �With club�察�and axe�察�and bow。 On each side
every hamlet Pours forth its joyous crowd�察 �Shouting lads and
baying dogs�察 �And children laughing loud�察 �And old men weeping
fondly As Rhea's boys go by�察 �And maids who shriek to see the
heads�察 �Yet�察�shrieking�察�press more nigh。

In the hall´gate sat Capys�察 �Capys�察�the sightless seer�察�From head
to foot he trembled As Romulus drew near。 And up stood stiff his
thin white hair�察 �And his blind eyes flashed fire�此 �`Hail� �foster child
of the wondrous nurse� �Hail� �son of the wondrous sire��''

``But thouwhat dost thou here In the old man's peaceful hall�拭�
What doth the eagle in the coop�察 �The bison in the stall�拭�Our corn

``For thee no treasure ripens In the Tartessian mine�察�For thee no
ship brings precious bales Across the Libyan brine�察�Thou shalt not
