                           THE TRAGEDY OF JULIUS CAESAR

                         SCENE I。 A house in Rome。

     Antony察Octavius察and Lepidus察seated at a table。

ANTONY。 These many then shall die察 their names are prick'd。

OCTAVIUS。 Your brother too must die察consent you察Lepidus拭LEPIDUS。

I do consent´ OCTAVIUS。 Prick him down察 Antony。 LEPIDUS。 Upon

condition Publius shall not live察Who is your sister's son察 Mark Antony。

ANTONY。 He shall not live察look察with a spot I damn him。 But察Lepidus察

go you to Caesar's house察 Fetch the will hither察 and we shall determine

How to cut off some charge in legacies。 LEPIDUS。 What察shall I find you

here拭 OCTAVIUS。 Or here察 or at the Capitol。 Exit Lepidus。 ANTONY。

This is a slight unmeritable man察Meet to be sent on errands。 Is it fit察The

three´fold world divided察 he should stand One of the three to share it拭

OCTAVIUS。 So you thought him察 And took his voice who should be

prick'd to die In our black sentence and proscription。 ANTONY。 Octavius察

I have seen more days than you察And though we lay these honors on this

man To ease ourselves of divers slanderous loads察He shall but bear them

as the ass bears gold察To groan and sweat under the business察Either led or

driven察as we point the way察And having brought our treasure where we

will察Then take we down his load and turn him off察Like to the empty ass察

to shake his ears And graze in commons。 OCTAVIUS。 You may do your

will察 But he's a tried and valiant soldier。 ANTONY。 So is my horse察

Octavius察and for that I do appoint him store of provender。 It is a creature

that I teach to fight察 To wind察 to stop察 to run directly on察 His corporal

motion govern'd by my spirit。 And察in some taste察is Lepidus but so此He

must be taught察and train'd察and bid go forth察A barren´spirited fellow察one

that feeds On objects察arts察and imitations察Which察out of use and staled by

other men察Begin his fashion。 Do not talk of him But as a property。 And

now察Octavius察Listen great things。 Brutus and Cassius Are levying powers察

we must straight make head察Therefore let our alliance be combined察Our

best friends made察 our means stretch'd察 And let us presently go sit in

council察How covert matters may be best disclosed察And open perils surest

answered。 OCTAVIUS。 Let us do so察 for we are at the stake察And bay'd

about with many enemies察And some that smile have in their hearts察I fear察

                          THE TRAGEDY OF JULIUS CAESAR

SCENE II。 Camp near Sardis。 Before Brutus' tent。

                                       Drum。

Enter Brutus察 Lucilius察 Lucius察 and Soldiers察 Titinius and Pindarus

BRUTUS。 Stand察 ho LUCILIUS。 Give the word察 ho察 and stand。

BRUTUS。 What now察Lucilius察is Cassius near拭LUCILIUS。 He is at hand察

and Pindarus is come To do you salutation from his master。 BRUTUS。 He

greets me well。 Your master察Pindarus察In his own change察or by ill officers察

Hath given me some worthy cause to wish Things done undone察but if he

be at hand察I shall be satisfied。 PINDARUS。 I do not doubt But that my

noble master will appear Such as he is察full of regard and honor。 BRUTUS。

He is not doubted。 A word察 Lucilius察 How he received you。 Let me be

with such familiar instances察Nor with such free and friendly conference察

As he hath used of old。 BRUTUS。 Thou hast described A hot friend

cooling。 Ever note察 Lucilius察 When love begins to sicken and decay It

useth an enforced ceremony。 There are no tricks in plain and simple faith察

But hollow men察like horses hot at hand察Make gallant show and promise

of their mettle察But when they should endure the bloody spur察They fall

their crests and like deceitful jades Sink in the trial。 Comes his army on拭

LUCILIUS。 They meant his night in Sard is to be quarter'd察The greater

part察 the horse in general察 Are come with Cassius。 Low march within。

BRUTUS。 Hark察he is arrived。 March gently on to meet him。

       Enter Cassius and his Powers。

CASSIUS。 Stand察 ho BRUTUS。 Stand察 ho Speak the word along。

FIRST SOLDIER。 Stand SECOND SOLDIER。 Stand THIRD SOLDIER。

how should I wrong a brother拭CASSIUS。 Brutus察this sober form of yours

hides wrongs察 And when you do them´ BRUTUS。 Cassius察 be content察

                           SCENE III。 Brutus' tent。

     Enter Brutus and Cassius。

CASSIUS。 That you have wrong'd me doth appear in this此You have

condemn'd and noted Lucius Pella For taking bribes here of the Sardians察

Wherein my letters察 praying on his side察 Because I knew the man察 were

slighted off。 BRUTUS。 You wrong'd yourself to write in such a case。

CASSIUS。 In such a time as this it is not meet That every nice offense

should bear his comment。 BRUTUS。 Let me tell you察 Cassius察 you

yourself Are much condemn'd to have an itching palm察To sell and mart

your offices for gold To undeservers。 CASSIUS。 I an itching palm拭You

know that you are Brutus that speaks this察 Or察 by the gods察 this speech

were else your last。 BRUTUS。 The name of Cassius honors this corruption察

And chastisement doth therefore hide his head。 CASSIUS。 Chastisement拭

BRUTUS。 Remember March察the ides of March remember。 Did not great

Julius bleed for justice' sake拭What villain touch'd his body察that did stab察

And not for justice拭What察shall one of us察That struck the foremost man

of all this world But for supporting robbers察shall we now Contaminate our

fingers with base bribes And sell the mighty space of our large honors For

so much trash as may be grasped thus拭I had rather be a dog察and bay the

moon察Than such a Roman。 CASSIUS。 Brutus察bait not me察I'll not endure

it。 You forget yourself To hedge me in。 I am a soldie
