proceeded to kill and eat察 which察 in a little while察 he heard that King

Harald was on foot to inquire into and punish察whereupon Rolf the Ganger

speedily got into his ships again察got to the coast of France with his sea´

robbers察got infeftment by the poor King of France in the fruitful察shaggy

desert which is since called Normandy察land of the Northmen察and there察

gradually felling the forests察banking the rivers察tilling the fields察became察

during the next two centuries察Wilhelmus Conquaestor察the man famous to

England察 and momentous at this day察 not to England alone察 but to all

speakers of the English tongue察now spread from side to side of the world

in a wonderful degree。 Tancred of Hauteville and his Italian Normans察

though important too察in Italy察are not worth naming in comparison。 This is

a feracious earth察and the grain of mustard´seed will grow to miraculous

extent in some cases。

Harald's chief helper察 counsellor察 and lieutenant was the above´

mentioned Jarl Rognwald of More察 who had the honor to cut Harald's

dreadful head of hair。 This Rognwald was father of Turf´Einar察who first

invented peat in the Orkneys察 finding the wood all gone there察 and is

remembered to this day。 Einar察 being come to these islands by King

Harald's permission察to see what he could do in themislands inhabited

by what miscellany of Picts察 Scots察 Norse squatters we do not know察

found the indispensable fuel all wasted。 Turf´Einar too may be regarded as

a benefactor to his kind。 He was察it appears察a bastard察and got no coddling

from his father察 who disliked him察partly perhaps察because ;he was ugly

and blind of an eye察got no flattering even on his conquest of the

Orkneys and invention of peat。 Here is the parting speech his father made

to him on fitting him out with a ;long´ship; ship of war察 dragon´ship察─

that thy people will have honor by thee察 thy mother's kin throughout is

slavish。;

Harald Haarfagr had a good many sons and daughters察the daughters

he married mostly to jarls of due merit who were loyal to him察with the

sons察 as remarked above察 he had a great deal of trouble。 They were

ambitious察stirring fellows察and grudged at their finding so little promotion

from a father so kind to his jarls察 sea´robbery by no means an adequate

career for the sons of a great king察two of them察Halfdan Haaleg Long´

Jarl Rognwald。 surrounded him in his house one night察and burnt him and

sixty men to death there。 That was the end of Rognwald察the invaluable

jarl察 always true to Haarfagr察 and distinguished in world history by

producing Rolf the Ganger察author of the Norman Conquest of England察

and Turf´Einar察who invented peat in the Orkneys。 Whether Rolf had left

Norway at this time there is no chronology to tell me。 As to Rolf's surname察

;Ganger察─ there are various hypotheses察 the likeliest察 perhaps察 that Rolf

was so weighty a man no horse small Norwegian horses察big ponies rather

could carry him察and that he usually walked察having a mighty stride withal察

and great velocity on foot。

One of these murderers of Jarl Rognwald quietly set himself in

Rognwald's place察the other making for Orkney to serve Turf´Einar in like

fashion。 Turf´Einar察taken by surprise察fled to the mainland察but returned察

days or perhaps weeks after察ready for battle察fought with Halfdan察put his

party to flight察and at next morning's light searched the island and slew all

the men he found。 As to Halfdan Long´leg himself察in fierce memory of

his own murdered father察Turf´Einar ;cut an eagle on his back察─that is to

say察hewed the ribs from each side of the spine and turned them out like

the wings of a spread´eagle此 a mode of Norse vengeance fashionable at

that time in extremely aggravated cases

Harald Haarfagr察in the mean time察had descended upon the Rognwald

scene察not in mild mood towards the new jarl there察indignantly dismissed

said jarl察and appointed a brother of Rognwald brother察notes Dahlmann察

though Rognwald had left other sons。 Which done察 Haarfagr sailed with

all speed to the Orkneys察there to avenge that cutting of an eagle on the

human back on Turf´Einar's part。 Turf´Einar did not resist察 submissively

met the angry Haarfagr察 said he left it all察 what had been done察 what

provocation there had been察 to Haarfagr's own equity and greatness of

mind。 Magnanimous Haarfagr inflicted a fine of sixty marks in gold察

which was paid in ready money by Turf´Einar察and so the matter ended。

                               CHAPTER II。

                       ERIC BLOOD´AXE AND BROTHERS。

In such violent courses Haarfagr's sons察I know not how many of them察

had come to an untimely end察only Eric察the accomplished sea´rover察and

three others remained to him。 Among these four sons察rather impatient for

property and authority of their own察King Harald察in his old days察tried to

part his kingdom in some eligible and equitable way察and retire from the

constant press of business察now becoming burdensome to him。 To each of

them he gave a kind of kingdom察Eric察his eldest son察to be head king察and

the others to be feudatory under him察and pay a certain yearly contribution察

an arrangement which did not answer well at all。 Head´King Eric insisted

on his tribute察quarrels arose as to the payment察considerable fighting and

disturbance察bringing fierce destruction from King Eric upon many valiant

but too stubborn Norse spirits察 and among the rest upon all his three

brothers察which got him from the Norse populations the surname of _Blod´

axe_察 Eric Blood´axe察─ his title in history。 One of his brothers he had

killed in battle before his old father's life ended察this brother was Bjorn察a

peaceable察 improving察 trading economic Under´king察 whom the others

mockingly called ;Bjorn the Chapman。; The great´grandson of this Bjorn

became extremely distinguished by and by as _Saint_ Olaf。 Head´King

Eric seems to have had a violent wife察 too。 She was thought to have

poisoned one of her other brothers´in´law。 Eric Blood´axe had by no

means a gentle life of it in this world察trained to sea´robbery on the coasts

of England察Scotland察Ireland and France察since his twelfth year。

Old King Fairhair察at the age of seventy察had another son察to whom was

given the name of Hakon。 His mother was a slave in Fairhair's house察

slave by ill´luck of war察though nobly enough born。 A strange adventure

connects this Hakon with England and King Athelstan察 who was then

entering upon his great career there。 Short while after this Hakon came

into the world察there entered Fairhair's palace察one evening as Fairhair sat
