Harold察as the English write it察his eldest brother would give him察Tosti察no

sufficient share in the kingship。 Which state of matters察if Svein would go

ahead with him to rectify it察would be greatly to the advantage of Svein。

Svein察 taught by many beatings察 was too wise for this proposal察 refused

Tosti察who indignantly stepped over into Norway察and proposed it to King

Harald there。 Svein really had acquired considerable teaching察 I should

guess察from his much beating and hard experience in the world察one finds

him afterwards the esteemed friend of the famous Historian Adam of

Bremen察who reports various wise humanities察and pleasant discoursings

with Svein Estrithson。

As for Harald Hardrade察 Harald the Hard or Severe察─as he was now

called察Tosti's proposal awakened in him all his old Vaeringer ambitious

and cupidities into blazing vehemence。 He zealously consented察 and at

once察with his whole strength察embarked in the adventure。 Fitted out two

hundred ships察 and the biggest army he could carry in them察 and sailed

with Tosti towards the dangerous Promised Land。 Got into the Tyne and

took booty察got into the Humber察thence into the Ouse察easily subdued any

opposition the official people or their populations could make察

victoriously scattered these察 victoriously took the City of York in a day察

and even got himself homaged there察 King of Northumberland察─ as per

covenantTosti proving honorableTosti and he going with faithful strict

copartnery察 and all things looking prosperous and glorious。 Except only

an important exception。 that they learnt for certain察English Harold was

advancing with all his strength察 and察 in a measurable space of hours察

unless care were taken察 would be in York himself。 Harald and Tosti

hastened off to seize the post of Stamford Bridge on Derwent River察six or

seven miles east of York City察and there bar this dangerous advent。 Their

own ships lay not far off in Ouse River察in case of the worst。 The battle

that ensued the next day察 September 20察 1066察 is forever memorable in

English history。

Snorro gives vividly enough his view of it from the Icelandic side此A

ring of stalwart Norsemen察 close ranked察 with their steel tools in hand察

English Harold's Army察mostly cavalry察prancing and pricking all around察

trying to find or make some opening in that ring。 For a long time trying in

vain察till at length察getting them enticed to burst out somewhere in pursuit察

they quickly turned round察and quickly made an end察of that matter。 Snorro

represents English Harold察with a first party of these horse coming up察and察

with preliminary salutations察asking if Tosti were there察and if Harald were察

making generous proposals to Tosti察 but察 in regard to Harald and what

share of England was to be his察answering Tosti with the words察 Seven

feet of English earth察or more if he require it察for a grave。; Upon which

Tosti察like an honorable man and copartner察said察 No察never察let us fight

you rather till we all die。; ;Who is this that spoke to you拭─inquired Harald察

when the cavaliers had withdrawn。 ;My brother Harold察─ answers Tosti察

which looks rather like a Saga察 but may be historical after all。 Snorro's

history of the battle is intelligible only after you have premised to it察what

he never hints at察that the scene was on the east side of the bridge and of

the Derwent察the great struggle for the bridge察one at last finds察was after

the fall of Harald察and to the English Chroniclers察said struggle察which was

abundantly severe察is all they know of the battle。

Enraged at that breaking loose of his steel ring of infantry察 Norse

Harald blazed up into true Norse fury察all the old Vaeringer and Berserkir

rage awakening in him察sprang forth into the front of the fight察and mauled

and cut and smashed down察 on both hands of him察 everything he met察

irresistible by any horse or man察 till an arrow cut him through the

windpipe察and laid him low forever。 That was the end of King Harald and

of his workings in this world。 The circumstance that he was a Waring or

Baring and had smitten to pieces so many Oriental cohorts or crowds察and

had made love´verses kind of iron madrigals to his Russian Princess察and

caught the fancy of questionable Greek queens察 and had amassed such

combine with Harald's treasuresall this is new to me察naturally no hint of

it in any English book察and lends some gleam of romantic splendor to that

dim business of Stamford Bridge察now fallen so dull and torpid to most

English minds察transcendently important as it once was to all Englishmen。

Adam of Bremen says察 the English got as much gold plunder from

Harald's people as was a heavy burden for twelve men撮18А a thing

reigned there with Magnus察his brother。 Harald's body did lie in English

                                    THE CRUSADER。

The new King Olaf察his brother Magnus having soon died察bore rule in

Norway for some five´and´twenty years。 Rule soft and gentle察not like his

The ceremonials of the palace were much improved by him。 Palace
