any continuing reign at allsometimes as many as four kings
simultaneously fightingand in Norway察 from sire to son察 nothing but
sanguinary anarchy察disaster and bewilderment察a Country sinking steadily
as if towards absolute ruin。 Of all which frightful misery and discord Irish
Gylle察 styled afterwards King Harald Gylle察 was察 by ill destiny and
otherwise察the visible origin此an illegitimate Irish Haarfagr who proved to
be his own destruction察and that of the Haarfagr kindred altogether
Sigurd himself seems always to have rather favored Gylle察who was a
cheerful察shrewd察patient察witty察and effective fellow察and had at first much
quizzing to endure察from the younger kind察on account of his Irish way of
speaking Norse察 and for other reasons。 One evening察 for example察 while
the drink was going round察Gylle mentioned that the Irish had a wonderful
talent of swift running and that there were among them people who could
keep up with the swiftest horse。 At which察especially from young Magnus察
there were peals of laughter察and a declaration from the latter that Gylle
and he would have it tried to´morrow morning Gylle in vain urged that he
had not himself professed to be so swift a runner as to keep up with the
Prince's horses察 but only that there were men in Ireland who could。
Magnus was positive察 and察 early next morning察 Gylle had to be on the
ground察and the race察naturally under heavy bet察actually went off。 Gylle
started parallel to Magnus's stirrup察 ran like a very roe察 and was clearly
ahead at the goal。 ;Unfair察─said Magnus察 thou must have had hold of my
stirrup´leather察and helped thyself along察we must try it again。; Gylle ran
behind the horse this second time察 then at the end察 sprang forward察 and

again was fairly in ahead。 ;Thou must have held by the tail察─said Magnus察
;not by fair running was this possible察 we must try a third time ─ Gylle
started ahead of Magnus and his horse察 this third time察 kept ahead with
increasing distance察Magnus galloping his very best察and reached the goal
more palpably foremost than ever。 So that Magnus had to pay his bet察and
other damage and humiliation。 And got from his father察 who heard of it
soon afterwards察scoffing rebuke as a silly fellow察who did not know the
worth of men察but only the clothes and rank of them察and well deserved
what he had got from Gylle。 All the time King Sigurd lived察Gylle seems
to have had good recognition and protection from that famous man察and察
indeed察to have gained favor all round察by his quiet social demeanor and
the qualities he showed。

CHAPTER XIII。
MAGNUS THE BLIND察HARALD GYLLE察AND MUTUAL
EXTINCTION OF THE HAARFAGRS。
On Sigurd the Crusader's death察Magnus naturally came to the throne察
Gylle keeping silence and a cheerful face for the time。 But it was not long
till claim arose on Gylle's part察till war and fight arose between Magnus
and him察till the skilful察popular察ever´active and shifty Gylle had entirely
beaten Magnus察 put out his eyes察 mutilated the poor body of him in a
horrid and unnamable manner察and shut him up in a convent as out of the
game henceforth。 There in his dark misery Magnus lived now as a monk察
called ;Magnus the Blind; by those Norse populations察King Harald Gylle
reigning victoriously in his stead。 But this also was only for a time。 There
arose avenging kinsfolk of Magnus察who had no Irish accent in their Norse察
and were themselves eager enough to bear rule in their native country。 By
one of thesea terribly stronghanded察 fighting察 violent察 and regardless
fellow察who also was a Bastard of Magnus Barefoot's察and had been made
a Priest察but liked it unbearably ill察and had broken loose from it into the
wildest courses at home and abroad察 so that his current name got to be
;Slembi´diakn察─Slim or Ill Deacon察under which he is much noised of in
Snorro and the Sagas此 by this Slim´Deacon察 Gylle was put an end to
murdered by night察 drunk in his sleep察 and poor blind Magnus was
brought out察and again set to act as King察or King's Cloak察in hopes Gylle's
posterity would never rise to victory more。 But Gylle's posterity did察 to
victory and also to defeat察 and were the death of Magnus and of Slim´
Deacon too察in a frightful way察and all got their own death by and by in a
ditto。 In brief察 these two kindreds reckoned to be authentic enough
Haarfagr people察 both kinds of them proved now to have become a
veritable crop of dragon's teeth察who mutually fought察plotted察struggled察
as if it had been their life's business察never ended fighting and seldom long
intermitted it察till they had exterminated one another察and did at last all rest
in death。 One of these later Gylle temporary Kings I remember by the

name of Harald Herdebred察Harald of the Broad Shoulders。 The very last
of them I think was Harald Mund Harald of the _Wry´Mouth_察who gave
rise to two Impostors察pretending to be Sons of his察a good while after the
poor Wry´Mouth itself and all its troublesome belongings were quietly
underground。 What Norway suffered during that sad century may be
imagined。

CHAPTER XIV。
SVERRIR AND DESCENDANTS察TO HAKON THE OLD。
The end of it was察or rather the first abatement察and _beginnings_ of
the end察That察 when all this had gone on ever worsening for some forty
years or so察one Sverrir A。D。 1177察at the head of an armed mob of poor
people called _Birkebeins_察came upon the scene。 A strange enough figure
in History察 this Sverrir and his Birkebeins At first a mere mockery and
dismal laughing´stock to the enlightened Norway public。 Nevertheless by
unheard´of fighting察hungering察exertion察and endurance察Sverrir察after ten
years of such a death´wrestle against men and things察got himself accepted
as King察 and by wonderful expenditure of ingenuity察 common cunning察
unctuous Parliamentary Eloquence or almost Popular Preaching察 and it
must be owned general human faculty and valor or value in the over´
clouded and distorted state察did victoriously continue such。 And founded a
new Dynasty in Norway察 which ended only with Norway's separate
existence察after near three hundred years。
This Sverrir called himself a Son of Harald Wry´Mouth察 but was in
reality the son of a poor Comb´maker in some little town of Norway察
nothing heard of Sonship to Wry´Mouth till after good success otherwise。
His Birkebeins that is to say察 _Birchlegs_ the poor rebellious wretches
having taken to the woods察 and been obliged察 besides their intolerable
scarcity of food察 to thatch their bodies from the cold with whatever
covering
