know。; ;I'm grieved察─ said BAGG察 at paining you ´ ;To COBB and
POLTHERTHWAITE I'll go ´
;To COBB'S cold察calculating ear察My gruesome sorrows I'll impart;
´ ;No察stop察─ said BAINES察 I'll dry my tear察And steel my sympathetic
heart。;
;She makes me perch upon a tree察Rewarding me with 'Sweety ´ nice'
And threatens to exhibit me With four or five performing mice。;
;Restrain my tears I wish I could; Said BAINES察 I don't know what
to do。; Said CAPTAIN BAGG察 You're very good。; ;Oh察not at all察─said
BAINES CAREW。
;She makes me fire a gun察─said BAGG察 And察at a preconcerted word察
Climb up a ladder with a flag察Like any street performing bird。
;She places sugar in my way ´ In public places calls me 'Sweet' She
gives me groundsel every day察And hard canary´seed to eat。;
;Oh察 woe oh察 sad oh察 dire to tell ─ 。Said BAINES。 ;Be good
enough to stop。; And senseless on the floor he fell察With unpremeditated
flop
Said CAPTAIN BAGG察 Well察 really I Am grieved to think it pains
you so。 I thank you for your sympathy察But察hang it come ´ I say察you
know ─
But BAINES lay flat upon the floor察Convulsed with sympathetic sob察
´ The Captain toddled off next door察And gave the case to MR。 COBB。

The Bab Ballads
Ballad此Thomas Winterbottom
Hance
In all the towns and cities fair On Merry England's broad expanse察No
swordsman ever could compare With THOMAS WINTERBOTTOM
HANCE。
The dauntless lad could fairly hew A silken handkerchief in twain察
Divide a leg of mutton too ´ And this without unwholesome strain。
On whole half´sheep察 with cunning trick察 His sabre sometimes he'd
employ ´ No bar of lead察however thick察Had terrors for the stalwart boy。
At Dover daily he'd prepare To hew and slash察behind察before ´ Which
aggravated MONSIEUR PIERRE察 Who watched him from the Calais
shore。
It caused good PIERRE to swear and dance察The sight annoyed and
vexed him so察 He was the bravest man in France ´ He said so察 and he
ought to know。
;Regardez donc察ce cochon gros ´ Ce polisson Oh察sacre bleu Son
sabre察son plomb察et ses gigots Comme cela m'ennuye察enfin察mon Dieu
;Il sait que les foulards de soie Give no retaliating whack ´ Les gigots
morts n'ont pas de quoi ´ Le plomb don't ever hit you back。;
But every day the headstrong lad Cut lead and mutton more and more察
And every day poor PIERRE察half mad察Shrieked loud defiance from his
shore。
HANCE had a mother察poor and old察A simple察harmless village dame察
Who crowed and clapped as people told Of WINTERBOTTOM'S rising
fame。
She said察 I'll be upon the spot To see my TOMMY'S sabre´play察─And
so she left her leafy cot察And walked to Dover in a day。
PIERRE had a doating mother察who Had heard of his defiant rage察HIS
Ma was nearly ninety´two察And rather dressy for her age。
At HANCE'S doings every morn察With sheer delight HIS mother cried察
And MONSIEUR PIERRE'S contemptuous scorn Filled HIS mamma with

proper pride。
But HANCE'S powers began to fail ´ His constitution was not strong ´
And PIERRE察who once was stout and hale察Grew thin from shouting all
day long。
Their mothers saw them pale and wan察 Maternal anguish tore each
breast察And so they met to find a plan To set their offsprings' minds at rest。
Said MRS。 HANCE察 Of course I shrinks From bloodshed察ma'am察as
you're aware察 But still they'd better meet察 I thinks。; ;Assurement ─ said
MADAME PIERRE。
A sunny spot in sunny France Was hit upon for this affair察The ground
was picked by MRS。 HANCE察 The stakes were pitched by MADAME
PIERRE。
Said MRS。 H。察 Your work you see ´ Go in察my noble boy察and win。;
;En garde察 mon fils ─ said MADAME P。 ;Allons ─ Go on ─ En
garde ─ Begin ─
The mothers were of decent size察Though not particularly tall察But in
the sketch that meets your eyes I've been obliged to draw them small。
Loud sneered the doughty man of France察 Ho ho Ho ho Ha ha
Ha ha The French for 'Pish'; said THOMAS HANCE。 Said PIERRE察
;L'Anglais察Monsieur察pour 'Bah。';
Said MRS。 H。察 Come察one two three We're sittin' here to see all
fair。; ;C'est magnifique ─said MADAME P。察 Mais察parbleu ce n'est pas
la guerre ─
;Je scorn un foe si lache que vous察─Said PIERRE察the doughty son of
France。 ;I fight not coward foe like you ─Said our undaunted TOMMY
HANCE。
;The French for 'Pooh'; our TOMMY cried。 ;L'Anglais pour 'Va'; the
Frenchman crowed。 And so察 with undiminished pride察 Each went on his
respective road。

The Bab Ballads
Ballad此The Reverend Micah Sowls
The REVEREND MICAH SOWLS察 He shouts and yells and howls察
He screams察he mouths察he bumps察He foams察he rants察he thumps。
His armour he has buckled on察to wage The regulation war against the
Stage察And warns his congregation all to shun ;The Presence´Chamber of
the Evil One察─
The subject's sad enough To make him rant and puff察And fortunately察
too察His Bishop's in a pew。
So REVEREND MICAH claps on extra steam察His eyes are flashing
with superior gleam察 He is as energetic as can be察 For there are fatter
livings in that see。
The Bishop察 when it's o'er察 Goes through the vestry door察 Where
MICAH察very red察Is mopping of his head。
;Pardon察 my Lord察 your SOWLS' excessive zeal察 It is a theme on
which I strongly feel。; The sermon somebody had sent him down From
London察at a charge of half´a´crown。
The Bishop bowed his head察And察acquiescing察said察 I've heard your
well´meant rage Against the Modern Stage。
;A modern Theatre察as I heard you say察Sows seeds of evil broadcast ´
well it may察But let me ask you察my respected son察Pray察have you ever
ventured into one拭─
;My Lord察─said MICAH察 no I never察never go What Go and see
a play拭My goodness gracious察nay ─
The worthy Bishop said察 My friend察no doubt The Stage may be the
place you make it out察But if察my REVEREND SOWLS察you never go察I
don't quite understand how you're to know。;
;Well察really察─MICAH said察 I've often heard and read察But never go ´
do you拭─The Bishop said察 I do。;
;That proves me wrong察─ said MICAH察 in a trice此 I thought it all
frivolity and vice。; The Bishop handed him a printed card察 Go to a theatre
where they play our Bard。;
The Bishop took his leave察Rejoicing in his sleeve。 The next ensuing

day SOWLS went and heard a play。
He saw a dreary person on the stage察 Who mouthed and mugged in
simulated rage察Who growled and spluttered in a mode absurd察And spoke
an English SOWLS had never heard。
For ;gaunt; was spoken ;garnt察─ And ;haunt; transformed to ;harnt察─
And ;wrath ; pronounced as ;rath察─ And ;death; was changed to ;dath。;
For hours and hours that dismal actor walked察And talked察and
