here I found her a visitor at the very house of whose locality she
had professed absolute ignorance
Any comments I might have intended to make on my pupil¨s
communication察were checked by the plashing of large rain´drops
on our faces and on the path察and by the muttering of a distant but
coming storm。 The warning obvious in stagnant air and leaden sky
had already induced me to take the road leading back to Brussels察
and now I hastened my own steps and those of my companion察
and察 as our way lay downhill察 we got on rapidly。 There was an
interval after the fall of the first broad drops before heavy rain
came on察 in the meantime we had passed through the Porte de
Louvain察and were again in the city。
^Where do you live拭院I asked察 I will see you safe home察院
^Rue Notre Dame aux Neiges察院answered Frances。

It was not far from the Rue de Louvain察 and we stood on the
doorsteps of the house we sought ere the clouds察 severing with
loud peal and shattered cataract of lightning察 emptied their livid
folds in a torrent察heavy察prone察and broad。
^Come in come in 院said Frances察as察after putting her into the
house察 I paused ere I followed此 the word decided me察 I stepped
across the threshold察 shut the door on the rushing察 flashing察
whitening storm察 and followed her upstairs to her apartments。
Neither she nor I were wet察a projection over the door had warded
off the straight´descending flood察 none but the first察 large drops
had touched our garments察 one minute more and we should not
have had a dry thread on us。
Stepping over a little mat of green wool察 I found myself in a
small room with a painted floor and a square of green carpet in the
middle察 the articles of furniture were few察 but all bright and
exquisitely clean察 order reigned through its narrow limits!such
order as it soothed my punctilious soul to behold。 And I had
hesitated to enter the abode察because I apprehended after all that
Mdlle Reuter¨s hint about its extreme poverty might be too well´
founded察and I feared to embarrass the lace´mender by entering
her lodgings unawares Poor the place might be察poor truly it was察
but its neatness was better than elegance察 and had but a bright
little fire shone on that clean hearth察I should have deemed it more
attractive than a palace。 No fire was there察 however察 and no fuel
laid ready to light察 the lace´mender was unable to allow herself
that indulgence察 especially now when察 deprived by death of her
sole relative察 she had only her own unaided exertions to rely on。
Frances went into an inner room to take off her bonnet察and she
came out a model of frugal neatness察 with her well´fitting black

stuff dress察so accurately defining her elegant bust and taper waist察
with her spotless white collar turned back from a fair and shapely
neck察with her plenteous brown hair arranged in smooth bands on
her temples察and in a large Grecian plait behind此 ornaments she
had none!neither brooch察ring察nor ribbon察 she did well enough
without them!perfection of fit察 proportion of form察 grace of
carriage察agreeably supplied their place。 Her eye察as she re´entered
the small sitting´room察instantly sought mine察which was just then
lingering on the hearth察I knew she read at once the sort of inward
ruth and pitying pain which the chill vacancy of that hearth stirred
in my soul此quick to penetrate察quick to determine察and quicker to
put in practice察she had in a moment tied a holland apron round
her waist察then she disappeared察and reappeared with a basket察it
had a cover察 she opened it察 and produced wood and coal察 deftly
and compactly she arranged them in the grate。
^It is her whole stock察and she will exhaust it out of hospitality察院
thought I。
^What are you going to do拭院I asked此 not surely to light a fire
this hot evening拭I shall be smothered。 ̄
^Indeed察 monsieur察 I feel it very chilly since the rain began察
besides察I must boil the water for my tea察for I take tea on Sundays察
you will be obliged to try and bear the heat。 ̄
She had struck a light察 the wood was already in a blaze察 and
truly察 when contrasted with the darkness察 the wild tumult of the
tempest without察that peaceful glow which began to beam on the
now animated hearth察 seemed very cheering。 A low察 purring
sound察from some quarter察announced that another being察besides
myself察 was pleased with the change察 a black cat察 roused by the
light from its sleep on a little cushioned foot´stool察 came and

rubbed its head against Frances¨ gown as she knelt察she caressed
it察saying it had been a favourite with her ^pauvre tante Julienne。 ̄
The fire being lit察the hearth swept察and a small kettle of a very
antique pattern察such as I thought I remembered to have seen in
old farmhouses in England察 placed over the now ruddy flame察
Frances¨ hands were washed察and her apron removed in an instant
then she opened a cupboard察and took out a tea´tray察on which she
had soon arranged a china tea´equipage察 whose pattern察 shape察
and size察denoted a remote antiquity察a little察old´fashioned silver
spoon was deposited in each saucer察 and a pair of silver tongs察
equally old´fashioned察 were laid on the sugar´basin察 from the
cupboard察too察was produced a tidy silver cream´ewer察 not larger
then an egg´shell。 While making these preparations察she chanced
to look up察 and察 reading curiosity in my eyes察 she smiled and
asked!
^Is this like England察monsieur拭院
^Like the England of a hundred years ago察院I replied。
^Is it truly拭Well察everything on this tray is at least a hundred
years old此 these cups察 these spoons察 this ewer察 are all heirlooms察
my great´grandmother left them to my grandmother察 she to my
mother察 and my mother brought them with her from England to
Switzerland察and left them to me察and察ever since I was a little girl察
I have thought I should like to carry them back to England察
whence they came。 ̄
She put some pistolets on the table察 she made the tea察 as
foreigners do make tea!i。e。察at the rate of a teaspoonful to half´a´
dozen cups察 she placed me a chair察 and察 as I took it察 she asked察
with a sort of exaltation!
^Will it make you think yourself at home for a moment拭院
