     I love all good and noble soulsI heard One speak of you but lately察

and for days Only to think of it察my soul was stirred In tender memory of

such generous praise。

       VERSE此                  THE STORY OF THE

                      FAITHFUL SOUL

    FOUNDED ON AN OLD FRENCH LEGEND

    The fettered Spirits linger In purgatorial pain察With penal fires effacing

Their last faint earthly stain察Which Life's imperfect sorrow Had tried to

cleanse in vain。

    Yet on each feast of Mary Their sorrow finds release察 For the Great

Archangel Michael Comes down and bids it cease察And the name of these

brief respites Is called ;Our Lady's Peace。;

    Yet onceso runs the Legend ´ When the Archangel came And all

these holy spirits Rejoiced at Mary's name察One voice alone was wailing察

Still wailing on the same。

    And though a great Te Deum The happy echoes woke察 This one

discordant wailing Through the sweet voices broke察So when St。 Michael

questioned察Thus the poor spirit spoke此

     ;I am not cold or thankless察 Although I still complain察 I prize our

Lady's blessing Although it comes in vain To still my bitter anguish察Or

quench my ceaseless pain。

     ;On earth a heart that loved me察Still lives and mourns me there察And

the shadow of his anguish Is more than I can bear察All the torment that I

suffer Is the thought of his despair。

     ;The evening of my bridal Death took my Life away察Not all Love's

passionate pleading Could gain an hour's delay。 And he I left has suffered

A whole year since that day。

     ;If I could only see him察 If I could only go And speak one word of

comfort And solacethen察 I know He would endure with patience察And

strive against his woe。;

    Thus the Archangel answered此 ;Your time of pain is brief察And soon

the peace of Heaven Will give you full relief察Yet if his earthly comfort So

much outweighs your grief察

     ;Then察through a special mercy I offer you this grace察 You may seek

him who mourns you And look upon his face察 And speak to him of

comfort For one short minute's space。

     ;But when that time is ended察 Return here察 and remain A thousand

years in torment察A thousand years in pain此Thus dearly must you purchase

The comfort he will gain。;

     * * *

     The Lime´trees' shade at evening Is spreading broad and wide察

Beneath their fragrant arches察Pace slowly察side by side察In low and tender

converse察A Bridegroom and his Bride。

     The night is calm and stilly察 No other sound is there Except their

happy voices此What is that cold bleak air That passes through the Lime´

trees And stirs the Bridegroom's hair拭

     While one low cry of anguish察Like the last dying wail Of some dumb察

hunted creature察 Is borne upon the gale此 Why does the Bridegroom

shudder And turn so deathly pale拭

     * * *

     Near Purgatory's entrance The radiant Angels wait察It was the great St。

Michael Who closed that gloomy gate察 When the poor wandering spirit

Came back to meet her fate。

     * * *

     ;Pass on察─thus spoke the Angel此Heaven's joy is deep and vast察Pass

on察pass on察poor Spirit察For Heaven is yours at last察In that one minute's

anguish Your thousand years have passed。;

                 VERSE此                  A CONTRAST

     Can you open that ebony Casket拭 Look察 this is the key此but stay察

Those are only a few old letters Which I keepto burn some day。

     Yes察that Locket is quaint and ancient察But leave it察dear察with the ring察

And give me the little Portrait Which hangs by a crimson string。

     I have never opened that Casket Since察many long years ago察It was

sent me back in anger By one whom I used to know。

     But I want you to see the Portrait此I wonder if you can trace A look of

that smiling creature Left now in my faded face。

     It was like me once察 but remember The weary relentless years察And

Life察with its fierce察brief Tempests察And its long察long rain of tears。

     Is it strange to call it my Portrait拭Nay察smile察dear察for well you may察

To think of that radiant Vision And of what I am to´day。

     With restless察yet confident longing How those blue eyes seem to gaze

Into deep and exhaustless Treasures察All hid in the coming days。

     With that trust which leans on the Future察And counts on her promised

store察Until she has taught us to tremble And hopebut to trust no more。

     How that young察light heart would have pitied Me nowif her dreams

had shown A quiet and weary woman With all her illusions flown。

     Yet Iwho shall soon be resting察And have passed the hardest part察

Can look back with a deeper pity On that young unconscious heart。

     It is strange察but Life's currents drift us So surely and swiftly on察That

we scarcely notice the changes察And how many things are gone此

     And forget察while to´day absorbs us察How old mysteries are unsealed察

How the old察old ties are loosened察And the old察old wounds are healed。

     And we say that our Life is fleeting Like a story that Time has told察

But we fancy that wewe only Are just what we were of old。

     So now and then it is wisdom To gaze察 as I do to´day察 At a half´

forgotten relic Of a Time that is passed away。

     The very look of that Portrait察 The Perfume that seems to cling To

those fragile and faded letters察And the Locket察and the Ring察

     If they only stirred in my spirit Forgotten pleasure and pain察 Why察

memory is often bitter察And almost always in vain察
