Of a heart to be given察 And all in vain察。See察her cheek is flushing察As if

with pain撮 He telleth of sorrow察 Regrets and fears察 And the few vain

pleasures We buy with tears察And the bitter lesson We learn from years。

The stars are gleaming Upon her brow此 What is she dreaming So

calmly now拭By her side is the Angel With folded wings察She smiles in her

slumber The while he sings。 He sings of a Bridal察Of Love divine察Of a

heart to be laid On a sacred shrine察Of a crown of glory察Where seraphs

shine察 Of the deep察 long rapture The chosen know Who forsake for

Heaven Vain joys below察Who desire no pleasure察And fear no woe。

The Bells are ringing察The sun shines clear察The Choir is singing察The

guests are here。 Before the High Altar Behold the Bride察And a mournful

Angel Is by her side。 She smiles察all content With her chosen lot察 Is her

last night's dreaming So soon forgot殖 And oh察may the Angel Forsake her

not For on her small hand There glitters plain The first sad link Of a life´

long chain察 And she needs his guiding Through paths of pain。

                VERSE此 THE ANGEL'S

                                 BIDDING

Not a sound is heard in the Convent察The Vesper Chant is sung察The

sick have all been tended察The poor nun's toils are ended Till the Matin

bell has rung。 All is still察 save the Clock察 that is ticking So loud in the

frosty air察And the soft snow察falling as gently As an answer to a prayer。

But an Angel whispers察 Oh察Sister察You must rise from your bed to pray察

In the silent察deserted chapel察You must kneel till the dawn of day察For察far

on the desolate moorland察So dreary察and bleak察and white察There is one察

all alone and helpless察In peril of death to´night。

;No sound on the moorland to guide him察 No star in the murky air察

And he thinks of his home and his loved ones With the tenderness of

despair察 He has wandered for hours in the snow´drift察And he strives to

stand in vain察And so lies down to dream of his children And never to rise

again。 Then kneel in the silent chapel Till the dawn of to´morrow's sun察

And ask of the Lord you worship For the life of that desolate one察And the

smiling eyes of his children Will gladden his heart again察And the grateful

tears of God's poor ones Will fall on your soul like rain

;Yet察leave him alone to perish察And the grace of your God implore察

With all the strength of your spirit察For one who needs it more。 Far away察

in the gleaming city察Amid perfume察and song察and light察A soul that Jesus

has ransomed Is in peril of sin to´night。

;The Tempter is close beside him察And his danger is all forgot察And the

far´off voices of childhood Call aloud察but he hears them not察He sayeth no

prayer察and his mother ´ He thinks not of her to´day察And he will not look

up to Heaven察And his Angel is turning away。

;Then pray for a soul in peril察A soul for which Jesus died察Ask察by the

cross that bore Him察And by her who stood beside察And the Angels of God

will thank you察 And bend from their thrones of light察 To tell you that

Heaven rejoices At the deed you have done to´night。;

                        VERSE此 SPRING

Hark the Hours are softly calling察Bidding Spring arise察To listen to

the raindrops falling From the cloudy skies察 To listen to Earth's weary

voices察Louder every day察 Bidding her no longer linger On her charmed

way察 But hasten to her task of beauty Scarcely yet begun察 By the first

bright day of summer It should all be done。 She has yet to loose the

fountain From its iron chain察And to make the barren mountain Green and

bright again察She must clear the snow that lingers Round the stalks away

And let the snowdrop's trembling whiteness See the light of day。 She must

watch察and warm察and cherish Every blade of green察Till the tender grass

appearing From the earth is seen察She must bring the golden crocus From

her hidden store察She must spread broad showers of daisies Each day more

and more。 In each hedgerow she must hasten Cowslips sweet to set察

Primroses in rich profusion察With bright dewdrops wet察And under every

leaf察in shadow Hide a Violet Every tree within the forest Must be decked

anew And the tender buds of promise Should be peeping through察Folded

deep察 and almost hidden察 Leaf by leaf beside察 What will make the

Summer's glory察And the Autumn's pride。 She must weave the loveliest

carpets察Chequered sun and shade察Every wood must have such pathways

Laid in every glade察 She must hang laburnum branches On each arched

bough察 And the white and purple lilac Should be waving now察She must

breathe察and cold winds vanish At her breath away察And then load the air

around her With the scent of May Listen then察Oh Spring nor linger On

thy charmed way察Have pity on thy prisoned flowers Wearying for the day。

Listen to the raindrops falling From the cloudy skies察Listen to the hours

calling Bidding thee arise。

The shadows of the evening hours Fall from the darkening sky察Upon

the fragrance of the flowers The dews of evening lie此Before Thy throne察

O Lord of Heaven察We kneel at close of day察Look on Thy children from

on high察And hear us while we pray。

The sorrows of Thy Servants察Lord察Oh察do not Thou despise察But let

the incense of our prayers Before Thy mercy rise察The brightness of the

coming night Upon the darkness rolls此With hopes of future glory chase

The shadows on our souls。

Slowly the rays of daylight fade察So fade within our heart察The hopes

in earthly love and joy察That one by one depart此Slowly the bright stars察

one by one察Within the Heavens shine察 Give us察Oh察Lord察fresh hopes in

Let peace察 Oh Lord察 Thy peace察 Oh God察 Upon our souls descend察

From midnight fears and perils察Thou Our trembling hearts defend察Give

us a respite from our toil察Calm and subdue our woes察Through the long

day we suffer察Lord察Oh察give us now repose
