restrained in all things�察�is freed from all pain。
362。 He who controls his hand�察 �he who controls his feet�察 �he who
controls his speech�察�he who is well controlled�察�he who delights inwardly�察�
who is collected�察�who is solitary and content�察�him they call Bhikshu。
363。 The Bhikshu who controls his mouth�察 �who speaks wisely and
calmly�察�who teaches the meaning and the law�察�his word is sweet。
364。 He who dwells in the law�察�delights in the law�察 �meditates on the
law�察�follows the law�察�that Bhikshu will never fall away from the true law。
365。 Let him not despise what he has received�察�nor ever envy others�此�a
mendicant who envies others does not obtain peace of mind。
366。 A Bhikshu who�察�though he receives little�察�does not despise what
he has received�察�even the gods will praise him�察�if his life is pure�察�and if he
is not slothful。
367。 He who never identifies himself with name and form�察�and does
not grieve over what is no more�察�he indeed is called a Bhikshu。
368。 The Bhikshu who acts with kindness�察�who is calm in the doctrine
of Buddha�察 �will reach the quiet place ��Nirvana���察 �cessation of natural
desires�察�and happiness。
369。 O Bhikshu�察�empty this boat� �if emptied�察�it will go quickly�察�having
cut off passion and hatred thou wilt go to Nirvana。
370。 Cut off the five ��senses���察�leave the five�察�rise above the five。 A
Bhikshu�察 �who has escaped from the five fetters�察 �he is called Oghatinna�察�
`saved from the flood。'
371。 Meditate�察 �O Bhikshu�察 �and be not heedless� �Do not direct thy
thought to what gives pleasure that thou mayest not for thy heedlessness

have to swallow the iron ball ��in hell���察�and that thou mayest not cry out
when burning�察 �This is pain。'
372。 Without knowledge there is no meditation�察 �without meditation
there is no knowledge�此�he who has knowledge and meditation is near unto
Nirvana。
373。 A Bhikshu who has entered his empty house�察�and whose mind is
tranquil�察�feels a more than human delight when he sees the law clearly。
374。 As soon as he has considered the origin and destruction of the
elements ��khandha�� of the body�察�he finds happiness and joy which belong
to those who know the immortal ��Nirvana��。
375。 And this is the beginning here for a wise Bhikshu�此�watchfulness
over the senses�察�contentedness�察�restraint under the law�察�keep noble friends
whose life is pure�察�and who are not slothful。
376。 Let him live in charity�察�let him be perfect in his duties�察�then in the
fulness of delight he will make an end of suffering。
377。 As the Vassika plant sheds its withered flowers�察�men should shed
passion and hatred�察�O ye Bhikshus� �
378。 The Bhikshu whose body and tongue and mind are quieted�察�who
is collected�察�and has rejected the baits of the world�察�he is called quiet。
379。 Rouse thyself by thyself�察 �examine thyself by thyself�察 �thus self´
protected and attentive wilt thou live happily�察�O Bhikshu� �
380。 For self is the lord of self�察�self is the refuge of self�察�therefore curb
thyself as the merchant curbs a good horse。
381。 The Bhikshu�察 �full of delight�察 �who is calm in the doctrine of
Buddha will reach the quiet place ��Nirvana���察�cessation of natural desires�察�
and happiness。
382。 He who�察�even as a young Bhikshu�察�applies himself to the doctrine
of Buddha�察�brightens up this world�察�like the moon when free from clouds。

Chapter XXVI The Brahmana
��Arhat��
383。 Stop the stream valiantly�察 �drive away the desires�察 �O Brahmana� �
When you have understood the destruction of all that was made�察�you will
understand that which was not made。
384。 If the Brahmana has reached the other shore in both laws ��in
restraint and contemplation���察�all bonds vanish from him who has obtained
knowledge。
385。 He for whom there is neither this nor that shore�察�nor both�察�him�察�
the fearless and unshackled�察�I call indeed a Brahmana。
386。 He who is thoughtful�察�blameless�察�settled�察�dutiful�察�without passions�察�
and who has attained the highest end�察�him I call indeed a Brahmana。
387。 The sun is bright by day�察�the moon shines by night�察�the warrior is
bright in his armour�察�the Brahmana is bright in his meditation�察�but Buddha�察�
the Awakened�察�is bright with splendour day and night。
388。 Because a man is rid of evil�察 �therefore he is called Brahmana�察�
because he walks quietly�察 �therefore he is called Samana�察�because he has
sent away his own impurities�察�therefore he is called Pravragita ��Pabbagita�察�
a pilgrim��。
389。 No one should attack a Brahmana�察�but no Brahmana ��if attacked��
should let himself fly at his aggressor� �Woe to him who strikes a
Brahmana�察�more woe to him who flies at his aggressor� �
390。 It advantages a Brahmana not a little if he holds his mind back
from the pleasures of life�察�when all wish to injure has vanished�察�pain will
cease。
391。 Him I call indeed a Brahmana who does not offend by body�察�word�察�
or thought�察�and is controlled on these three points。
392。 After a man has once understood the law as taught by the Well´
awakened ��Buddha���察 �let him worship it carefully�察 �as the Brahmana
worships the sacrificial fire。
393。 A man does not become a Brahmana by his platted hair�察�by his

family�察�or by birth�察�in whom there is truth and righteousness�察�he is blessed�察�
he is a Brahmana。
394。 What is the use of platted hair�察 �O fool� �what of the raiment of
goat´skins�拭 �Within thee there is ravening�察 �but the outside thou makest
clean。
395。 The man who wears dirty raiments�察�who is emaciated and covered
with veins�察�who lives alone in the forest�察�and meditates�察�him I call indeed a
Brahmana。
396。 I do not call a man a Brahmana because of his origin or of his
mother。 He is indeed arrogant�察�and he is wealthy�此�but the poor�察�who is
free from all attachments�察�him I call indeed a Brahmana。
397。 Him I call indeed a Brahmana who has cut all fetters�察�who never
trembles�察�is independent and unshackled。
398。 Him I call indeed a Brahmana who has cut the strap and the thong�察�
the chain with all that pertains to it�察 �who has burst the bar�察 �and is
awakened。
399。 Him I call indeed a Brahmana who�察�though he has committed no
offence�察�endures reproach�察�bonds�察�and stripes�察�who has endurance for his
force�察�and strength for his army。
400。 Him I call indeed a Brahmana who is free from anger�察 �dutiful�察�
virtuous�察�without appetite�察�who is subdued�察�and has received his last body。
401。 Him I call indeed a Brahmana who does not cling to pleasures�察�
like water on a lotus leaf�察�like a mustard seed on the point of a needle。
402。 Him I call indeed a Brahmana who�察�even here�察�knows the end of
his suffering�察�has put down his burden�察�and is unshackled。
403。 Him I call indeed a Brahmana whose knowledge is deep�察 �who
possesses wisdom�察 �who knows the right way and the wrong�察 �and has
attained the highest end。
404。 Him I cal
