there is no pain like this body�察�there is no happiness higher than rest。
203。 Hunger is the worst of diseases�察�the body the greatest of pains�察�if
one knows this truly�察�that is Nirvana�察�the highest happiness。
204。 Health is the greatest of gifts�察�contentedness the best riches�察�trust
is the best of relationships�察�Nirvana the highest happiness。
205。 He who has tasted the sweetness of solitude and tranquillity�察 �is
free from fear and free from sin�察�while he tastes the sweetness of drinking
in the law。
206。 The sight of the elect ��Arya�� is good�察�to live with them is always
happiness�察�if a man does not see fools�察�he will be truly happy。
207。 He who walks in the company of fools suffers a long way�察�
company with fools�察�as with an enemy�察�is always painful�察�company with
the wise is pleasure�察�like meeting with kinsfolk。
208。 Therefore�察 �one ought to follow the wise�察 �the intelligent�察 �the
learned�察�the much enduring�察 �the dutiful�察�the elect�察 �one ought to follow a
good and wise man�察�as the moon follows the path of the stars。

Chapter XVI Pleasure
209。 He who gives himself to vanity�察 �and does not give himself to
meditation�察�forgetting the real aim ��of life�� and grasping at pleasure�察�will
in time envy him who has exerted himself in meditation。
210。 Let no man ever look for what is pleasant�察�or what is unpleasant。
Not to see what is pleasant is pain�察�and it is pain to see what is unpleasant。
211。 Let�察�therefore�察�no man love anything�察�loss of the beloved is evil。
Those who love nothing and hate nothing�察�have no fetters。
212。 From pleasure comes grief�察�from pleasure comes fear�察�he who is
free from pleasure knows neither grief nor fear。
213。 From affection comes grief�察�from affection comes fear�察�he who is
free from affection knows neither grief nor fear。
214。 From lust comes grief�察�from lust comes fear�察�he who is free from
lust knows neither grief nor fear。
215。 From love comes grief�察�from love comes fear�察�he who is free from
love knows neither grief nor fear。
216。 From greed comes grief�察�from greed comes fear�察�he who is free
from greed knows neither grief nor fear。
217。 He who possesses virtue and intelligence�察�who is just�察�speaks the
truth�察�and does what is his own business�察�him the world will hold dear。
218。 He in whom a desire for the Ineffable ��Nirvana�� has sprung up�察�
who is satisfied in his mind�察 �and whose thoughts are not bewildered by
love�察�he is called urdhvamsrotas ��carried upwards by the stream��。
219。 Kinsmen�察 �friends�察 �and lovers salute a man who has been long
away�察�and returns safe from afar。
220。 In like manner his good works receive him who has done good�察�
and has gone from this world to the other��as kinsmen receive a friend on
his return。

Chapter XVII Anger
221。 Let a man leave anger�察�let him forsake pride�察�let him overcome all
bondage� �No sufferings befall the man who is not attached to name and
form�察�and who calls nothing his own。
222。 He who holds back rising anger like a rolling chariot�察�him I call a
real driver�察�other people are but holding the reins。
223。 Let a man overcome anger by love�察 �let him overcome evil by
good�察�let him overcome the greedy by liberality�察�the liar by truth� �
224。 Speak the truth�察�do not yield to anger�察�give�察�if thou art asked for
little�察�by these three steps thou wilt go near the gods。
225。 The sages who injure nobody�察�and who always control their body�察�
they will go to the unchangeable place ��Nirvana���察�where�察�if they have gone�察�
they will suffer no more。
226。 Those who are ever watchful�察�who study day and night�察�and who
strive after Nirvana�察�their passions will come to an end。
227。 This is an old saying�察�O Atula�察�this is not only of to´day�此 �They
blame him who sits silent�察 �they blame him who speaks much�察�they also
blame him who says little�察�there is no one on earth who is not blamed。'
228。 There never was�察�there never will be�察�nor is there now�察�a man who
is always blamed�察�or a man who is always praised。
229�察�230。 But he whom those who discriminate praise continually day
after day�察 �as without blemish�察 �wise�察 �rich in knowledge and virtue�察 �who
would dare to blame him�察�like a coin made of gold from the Gambu river�拭�
Even the gods praise him�察�he is praised even by Brahman。
231。 Beware of bodily anger�察�and control thy body� �Leave the sins of
the body�察�and with thy body practise virtue� �
232。 Beware of the anger of the tongue�察 �and control thy tongue� �
Leave the sins of the tongue�察�and practise virtue with thy tongue� �
233。 Beware of the anger of the mind�察�and control thy mind� �Leave the
sins of the mind�察�and practise virtue with thy mind� �
234。 The wise who control their body�察 �who control their tongue�察 �the
wise who control their mind�察�are indeed well controlled。

Chapter XVIII Impurity
235。 Thou art now like a sear leaf�察 �the messengers of death ��Yama��
have come near to thee�察 �thou standest at the door of thy departure�察 �and
thou hast no provision for thy journey。
236。 Make thyself an island�察 �work hard�察 �be wise� �When thy
impurities are blown away�察 �and thou art free from guilt�察 �thou wilt enter
into the heavenly world of the elect ��Ariya��。
237。 Thy life has come to an end�察�thou art come near to death ��Yama���察�
there is no resting´place for thee on the road�察�and thou hast no provision
for thy journey。
238。 Make thyself an island�察 �work hard�察 �be wise� �When thy
impurities are blown away�察�and thou art free from guilt�察�thou wilt not enter
again into birth and decay。
239。 Let a wise man blow off the impurities of his self�察 �as a smith
blows off the impurities of silver one by one�察�little by little�察�and from time
to time。
240。 As the impurity which springs from the iron�察�when it springs from
it�察�destroys it�察�thus do a transgressor's own works lead him to the evil path。
241。 The taint of prayers is non´repetition�察 �the taint of houses�察 �non´
repair�察 �the taint of the body is sloth�察 �the taint of a watchman�察�
thoughtlessness。
242。 Bad conduct is the taint of woman�察 �greediness the taint of a
benefactor�察�tainted are all evil ways in this world and in the next。
243。 But there is a taint worse than all taints��ignorance is the greatest
taint。 O mendicants� �throw off that taint�察�and become taintless� �
244。 Life is easy to live for a man who is without shame�察�a crow hero�察�
a mischief´maker�察�an insulting�察�bold�察�and wretched fellow。
245。 But life is hard to live for a modest man�察�who always looks for
what is pure�察�who is disinterested�察�quiet�察�spotless�察�and intelligent。
246。 He who destroys life�察�who speaks untruth�察�who in this world takes
what is not given him�察�who goes to another man's wife�察�
247。 And the man who gives himself to drinking intoxicating liquors�察�
