In the cruel fire of Sorrow Cast thy heart察do not faint or wail察Let thy
hand be firm and steady察Do not let thy spirit quail此But wait till the trial is
over察And take thy heart again察For as gold is tried by fire察So a heart must
be tried by pain
I shall know by the gleam and glitter Of the golden chain you wear察By
your heart's calm strength in loving察Of the fire they have had to bear。 Beat
on察true heart察for ever察Shine bright察strong golden chain察And bless the
cleansing fire察And the furnace of living pain

VERSE此 THE VOICE OF THE
WIND
Let us throw more logs on the fire We have need of a cheerful light察
And close round the hearth to gather察For the wind has risen to´night。 With
the mournful sound of its wailing It has checked the children's glee察And it
calls with a louder clamour Than the clamour of the sea。 Hark to the voice
of the wind
Let us listen to what it is saying察Let us hearken to where it has been察
For it tells察in its terrible crying察The fearful sights it has seen。 It clatters
loud at the casements察 Round the house it hurries on察And shrieks with
redoubled fury察When we say ;The blast is gone ─Hark to the voice of the
wind
It has been on the field of battle察Where the dying and wounded lie察
And it brings the last groan they uttered察And the ravenous vulture's cry。 It
has been where the icebergs were meeting察And closed with a fearful crash察
On shores where no foot has wandered察It has heard the waters dash。 Hark
to the voice of the wind
It has been on the desolate ocean察When the lightning struck the mast察
It has heard the cry of the drowning察 Who sank as it hurried past察 The
words of despair and anguish察That were heard by no living ear察The gun
that no signal answered此It brings them all to us here。 Hark to the voice of
the wind
It has been on the lonely moorland察Where the treacherous snow´drift
lies察Where the traveller察spent and weary察Gasped fainter and fainter cries察
It has heard the bay of the bloodhounds察On the track of the hunted slave察
The lash and the curse of the master察And the groan that the captive gave。
Hark to the voice of the wind
It has swept through the gloomy forest察Where the sledge was urged to
its speed察 Where the howling wolves were rushing On the track of the
panting steed。 Where the pool was black and lonely察It caught up a splash
and a cry ´ Only the bleak sky heard it察And the wind as it hurried by。 Hark

to the voice of the wind
Then throw more logs on the fire察Since the air is bleak and cold察And
the children are drawing nigher察For the tales that the wind has told。 So
closer and closer gather Round the red and crackling light察And rejoice
while the wind is blowing We are safe and warm to´night。 Hark to the
voice of the wind

VERSE此 TREASURES
Let me count my treasures察All my soul holds dear察Given me by dark
spirits Whom I used to fear。
Through long days of anguish察 And sad nights察 did Pain Forge my
shield察Endurance察Bright and free from stain
Doubt察 in misty caverns察 'Mid dark horrors sought察 Till my peerless
jewel察Faith to me she brought。
Sorrow察 that I wearied Should remain so long察 Wreathed my starry
glory察The bright Crown of Song。
Strife察that racked my spirit察Without hope or rest察Left the blooming
flower察Patience察on my breast。
Suffering察that I dreaded察Ignorant of her charms察Laid the fair child察
Pity察Smiling察in my arms。
So I count my treasures察 Stored in days long past ´ And I thank the
givers察Whom I know at last

VERSE此 SHINING STARS
Shine察ye stars of heaven察On a world of pain See old Time destroying
All our hoarded gain察All our sweetest flowers察Every stately shrine察All
our hard´earned glory察Every dream divine
Shine察 ye stars of heaven察 On the rolling years See how Time察
consoling察Dries the saddest tears察Bids the darkest storm´clouds Pass in
gentle rain察While upspring in glory察Flowers and dreams again
Shine察ye stars of heaven察On a world of fear See how Time察avenging察
Bringeth judgment here察 Weaving ill´won honours To a fiery crown察
Bidding hard hearts perish察Casting proud hearts down。
Shine察 ye stars of heaven察 On the hours' slow flight See how Time察
rewarding察Gilds good deeds with light察Pays with kingly measure察Brings
earth's dearest prize察Or察crowned with rays diviner察Bids the end arise

VERSE此 WAITING
;Wherefore dwell so sad and lonely察By the desolate sea´shore察With
the melancholy surges Beating at your cottage door拭
;You shall dwell beside the castle Shadowed by our ancient trees察And
your life shall pass on gently察Cared for察and in rest and ease。;
;Lady察one who loved me dearly Sailed for distant lands away察And I
wait here his returning Hopefully from day to day。
;To my door I bring my spinning察Watching every ship I see察Waiting察
hoping察till the sunset Fades into the western sea。
;After sunset察at my casement察Still I place a signal light察He will see
its well´known shining Should his ship return at night。
;Lady察 see your infant smiling察 With its flaxen curling hair ´ I
remember when your mother Was a baby just as fair。
;I was watching then察and hoping此Years have brought great change to
all察To my neighbours in their cottage察To you nobles at the hall。
;Not to mefor I am waiting察And the years have fled so fast察I must
look at you to tell me That a weary time has past
;When I hear a footstep coming On the shingleyears have fled ´ Yet
amid a thousand others察I shall know his quick察light tread。
;When I hear to´night it may be Some one pausing at my door察 I
shall know the gay soft accents察Heard and welcomed oft before
;So each day I am more hopeful察He may come before the night此Every
sunset I feel surer He must come ere morning light。
;Then I thank you察noble lady察But I cannot do your will此Where he left
me察he must find me。 Waiting察watching察hoping察still ─
