I察 thy mother察 Almost long to see thee die。 Sleep察 my darling察 thou art
weary察God is good察but life is dreary。
I have watched thy beauty fading察And thy strength sink day by day察
Soon察I know察will Want and Fever Take thy little life away。 Famine makes
thy father reckless察Hope has left both him and me察We could suffer all察
my baby察Had we but a crust for thee。 Sleep察my darling察thou art weary察
God is good察but life is dreary。
Better thou shouldst perish early察Starve so soon察my darling one察Than
in helpless sin and sorrow Vainly live察as I have done。 Better that thy angel
spirit With my joy察my peace察were flown察Than thy heart grew cold and
careless察 Reckless察 hopeless察 like my own。 Sleep察 my darling察 thou art
weary察God is good察but life is dreary。
I am wasted察 dear察 with hunger察And my brain is all opprest察 I have
scarcely strength to press thee察 Wan and feeble察 to my breast。 Patience察
baby察God will help us察Death will come to thee and me察He will take us to
his Heaven察 Where no want or pain can be。 Sleep察 my darling察 thou art
weary察God is good察but life is dreary。
Such the plaint that察late and early察Did we listen察we might hear Close
beside usbut the thunder Of a city dulls our ear。 Every heart察as God's
bright Angel察 Can bid one such sorrow cease察 God has glory when his
children Bring his poor ones joy and peace Listen察nearer while she sings
Sounds the fluttering of wings

VERSE此 GOD'S GIFTS
God gave a gift to Earth此 a child察 Weak察 innocent察 and undefiled察
Opened its ignorant eyes and smiled。
It lay so helpless察so forlorn察Earth took it coldly and in scorn察Cursing
the day when it was born。
She gave it first a tarnished name察For heritage察a tainted fame察Then
cradled it in want and shame。
All influence of Good or Right察All ray of God's most holy light察She
curtained closely from its sight。
Then turned her heart察her eyes away察Ready to look again察the day Its
little feet began to stray。
In dens of guilt the baby played察Where sin察and sin alone察was made
The law that all around obeyed。
With ready and obedient care察He learnt the tasks they taught him there察
Black sin for lessonoaths for prayer。
Then Earth arose察 and察 in her might察 To vindicate her injured right察
Thrust him in deeper depths of night。
Branding him with a deeper brand Of shame察he could not understand察
The felon outcast of the land。

God gave a gift to Earth此 a child察 Weak察 innocent察 and undefiled察
Opened its ignorant eyes and smiled。
And Earth received the gift察 and cried Her joy and triumph far and
wide察Till echo answered to her pride。
She blest the hour when first he came To take the crown of pride and
fame察Wreathed through long ages for his name。
Then bent her utmost art and skill To train the supple mind and will察
And guard it from a breath of ill。
She strewed his morning path with flowers察 And Love察 in tender
dropping showers察Nourished the blue and dawning hours。
She shed察in rainbow hues of light察A halo round the Good and Right察
To tempt and charm the baby's sight。

And every step察of work or play。 Was lit by some such dazzling ray察
Till morning brightened into day。
And then the World arose察and said ´ Let added honours now be shed
On such a noble heart and head
O World察 both gifts were pure and bright察 Holy and sacred in God's
sight此 God will judge them and thee aright

VERSE此 A TOMB IN GHENT
A smiling look she had察a figure slight察With cheerful air察and step both
quick and light察A strange and foreign look the maiden bore察That suited
the quaint Belgian dress she wore Yet the blue fearless eyes in her fair face察
And her soft voice told her of English race察And ever察as she flitted to and
fro察She sang察。or murmured察rather撮 soft and low察Snatches of song察as if
she did not know That she was singing察but the happy load Of dream and
thought thus from her heart o'erflowed此And while on household cares she
passed along察The air would bear me fragments of her song察Not such as
village maidens sing察and few The framers of her changing music knew察
Chants such as heaven and earth first heard of when The master Palestrina
held the pen。 But I with awe had often turned the page察Yellow with time察
and half defaced by age察And listened察 with an ear not quite unskilled察
While heart and soul to the grand echo thrilled察And much I marvelled察as
her cadence fell From the Laudate察 that I knew so well察 Into Scarlatti's
minor fugue察how she Had learned such deep and solemn harmony。 But
what she told I set in rhyme察as meet To chronicle the influence察dim and
sweet察'Neath which her young and innocent life had grown此Would that
my words were simple as her own。
Many years since察an English workman went Over the seas察to seek a
home in Ghent察Where English skill was prized察nor toiled in vain察Small察
yet enough察his hard´earned daily gain。 He dwelt alonein sorrow察or in
pride。 He mixed not with the workers by his side察He seemed to care but
for one present joy ´ To tend察to watch察to teach his sickly boy。 Severe to
all beside察yet for the child He softened his rough speech to soothings mild察
For him he smiled察with him each day he walked Through the dark gloomy
streets察to him he talked Of home察of England察and strange stories told Of
English heroes in the days of old察And察。when the sunset gilded roof and
spire撮 The marvellous tale which never seemed to tire此 How the gilt
dragon察glaring fiercely down From the great belfry察watching all the town察
Was brought察a trophy of the wars divine察By a Crusader from far Palestine察
And given to Bruges察and how Ghent arose察And how they struggled long
