rise察Spread his bright wines察and glitter in the skies。 And over desert lands

and azure seas察Will seek his home 'mid palm and cedar trees。 So察as he

passed the belfry every day察The boy would look if it were flown away察

Each day surprised to find it watching there察Above him察as he crossed the

ancient square察 To seek the great cathedral察 that had grown A home for

himmysterious and his own。

Dim with dark shadows of the ages past察St。 Bavon stands察solemn and

rich and vast察The slender pillars察in long vistas spread察Like forest arches

meet and close o'erhead察 So high that察 like a weak and doubting prayer察

Ere it can float to the carved angels there察 The silver clouded incense

faints in air此 Only the organ's voice察 with peal on peal察 Can mount to

where those far´off angels kneel。 Here the pale boy察beneath a low side´

arch察Would listen to its solemn chant or march察Folding his little hands察

his simple prayer Melted in childish dreams察 and both in air此 While the

great organ over all would roll察Speaking strange secrets to his innocent

soul察Bearing on eagle´wings the great desire Of all the kneeling throng察

and piercing higher Than aught but love and prayer can reach察until Only

the silence seemed to listen still察 Or gathering like a sea still more and

more察Break in melodious waves at heaven's door察And then fall察slow and

soft察in tender rain察Upon the pleading longing hearts again。

Then he would watch the rosy sunlight glow察 That crept along the

marble floor below察Passing察as life does察with the passing hours察Now by

a shrine all rich with gems and flowers察 Now on the brazen letters of a

tomb察 Then察 leaving it again to shade and gloom察 And creeping on察 to

show察 distinct and quaint察The kneeling figure of some marble saint此 Or

lighting up the carvings strange and rare察 That told of patient toil察 and

reverent care察Ivy that trembled on the spray察and ears察Of heavy corn察and

slender bulrush spears察And all the thousand tangled weeds that grow In

summer察 where the silver rivers flow察And demon´heads grotesque察 that

seemed to glare In impotent wrath on all the beauty there此Then the gold

rays up pillared shaft would climb察And so be drawn to heaven察at evening

time。 And deeper silence察darker shadows flowed On all around察only the

                                                                                               50

windows glowed With blazoned glory察like the shields of light Archangels

bear察who察armed with love and might察Watch upon heaven's battlements at

night。 Then all was shade察 the silver lamps that gleamed察 Lost in the

daylight察in the darkness seemed Like sparks of fire in the dim aisles to

shine察Or trembling stars before each separate shrine。 Grown half afraid察

the child would leave them there察 And come out察 blinded by the noisy

glare That burst upon him from the busy square。

The church was thus his home for rest or play察And as he came and

went again each day察The pictured faces that he knew so well察Seemed to

smile on him welcome and farewell。 But holier察 and dearer far than all察

One sacred spot his own he loved to call察Save at mid´day察half´hidden by

the gloom察 The people call it The White Maiden's Tomb此 For there she

stands察her folded hands are pressed Together察and laid softly on her breast察

As if she waited but a word to rise From the dull earth察and pass to the

blue skies察Her lips expectant part察she holds her breath察As listening for

the angel voice of death。 None know how many years have seen her so察Or

what the name of her who sleeps below。 And here the child would come察

and strive to trace察Through the dim twilight察the pure gentle face He loved

so well察 and here he oft would bring Some violet blossom of the early

spring察And climbing softly by the fretted stand察Not to disturb her察lay it

in her hand察Or察whispering a soft loving message sweet察Would stoop and

kiss the little marble feet。 So察 when the organ's pealing music rang察 He

thought amid the gloom the Maiden sang察With reverent simple faith by

her he knelt察And fancied what she thought察and what she felt。 ;Glory to

God察─re´echoed from her voice察And then his little spirit would rejoice察Or

when the Requiem sobbed upon the air察His baby tears dropped with her

mournful prayer。

So years fled on察 while childish fancies past察 The childish love and

simple faith could last。 The artist´soul awoke in him察the flame Of genius察

like the light of Heaven察came Upon his brain察and as it will察if true It

touched his heart and lit his spirit察too His father saw察and with a proud

content Let him forsake the toil where he had spent His youth's first years察

and on one happy day Of pride察before the old man passed away察He stood

with quivering lips察and the big tears Upon his cheek察and heard the dream

of years Living and speaking to his very heart ´ The low hushed murmur at

the wondrous art Of him察 who with young trembling fingers made The

great church´organ answer as he played察And察as the uncertain sound grew

full and strong察Rush with harmonious spirit´wings along察And thrill with

master´power the breathless throng。

The old man died察and years passed on察and still The young musician

bent his heart and will To his dear toil。 St。 Bavon now had grown More

dear to him察 and even more his own察 And as he left it every night he

prayed A moment by the archway in the shade察Kneeling once more within

the sacred gloom Where the White Maiden watched upon her tomb。 His

hopes of travel and a world´wide fame察Cold Time had sobered察and his

fragile frame察 Content at last only in dreams to roam察 Away from the

tranquillity of home察Content that the poor dwellers by his side Saw in him

but the gentle friend and guide察The patient counsellor in the poor strife

And petty details of their common life察 Who comforted where woe and

grief might fall察Nor slighted any pain or want as small察But whose great

heart took in and felt for all。

Still he grew famousmany came to be His pupils in the art of

harmony。 One day a voice floated so pure and free Above his music察that

he turned to see What angel sang察and saw before his eyes察What made his

heart leap with a strange surprise察His own White Maiden察calm察and pure察

and mild察As in his childish dreams she sang and smiled察Her eyes raised

up to Heaven察her lips apart察And music overflowing from her heart。 But

the faint blush that tinged her cheek betrayed No marble statue察 but a

living maid察 Perplexed and startled at his wondering look察 Her rustling

score of Mozart's Sanctus shook察The uncertain notes察like birds within a

snare察Fluttered and died upon the trembling air。

Days passed察each morning saw the maiden stand察Her eyes cast down察

her lesson in her hand察Eager to study察never weary察while Repaid by the

approving word or smile Of her kind master察 days and months fled on察

One day the pupil from the choir was gone察Gone to take light察and joy察

and youth once more察 Within the poor musician's
