VERSE此 A PARTING
Without one bitter feeling let us part ´ And for the years in which your
love has shed A radiance like a glory round my head察I thank you察yes察I
thank you from my heart。
I thank you for the cherished hope of years察A starry future察dim and
yet divine察Winging its way from Heaven to be mine察Laden with joy察and
ignorant of tears。
I thank you察 yes察 I thank you even more That my heart learnt not
without love to live察But gave and gave察and still had more to give察From
an abundant and exhaustless store。
I thank you察and no grief is in these tears察I thank you察not in bitterness
but truth察For the fair vision that adorned my youth And glorified so many
happy years。
Yet how much more I thank you that you tore At length the veil your
hand had woven away察Which hid my idol was a thing of clay察And false
the altar I had knelt before。
I thank you that you taught me the stern truth察。None other could have
told and I believed撮 That vain had been my life察 and I deceived察 And
wasted all the purpose of my youth。
I thank you that your hand dashed down the shrine察Wherein my idol
worship I had paid察Else had I never known a soul was made To serve and
worship only the Divine。
I thank you that the heart I cast away On such as you察though broken察
bruised and crushed察 Now that its fiery throbbing is all hushed察 Upon a
worthier altar I can lay。
I thank you for the lesson that such love Is a perverting of God's royal
right察That it is made but for the Infinite察And all too great to live except
above。
I thank you for a terrible awaking察And if reproach seemed hidden in
my pain察 And sorrow seemed to cry on your disdain察 Know that my
blessing lay in your forsaking。
Farewell for ever now此 in peace we part察And should an idle vision of

VERSE此 THE GOLDEN GATE
Dim shadows gather thickly round察and up the misty stair they climb察
The cloudy stair that upward leads to where the closed portals shine察
Round which the kneeling spirits wait the opening of the Golden Gate。
And some with eager longing go察still pressing forward察hand in hand察
And some with weary step and slow察look back where their Beloved stand
´ Yet up the misty stair they climb察led onward by the Angel Time。
As unseen hands roll back the doors察the light that floods the very air
Is but the shadow from within察of the great glory hidden there ´ And morn
and eve察and soon and late察the shadows pass within the gate。
As one by one they enter in察and the stern portals close once more察The
halo seems to linger round those kneeling closest to the door此The joy that
lightened from that place shines still upon the watcher's face。
The faint low echo that we hear of far´off music seems to fill The
silent air with love and fear察and the world's clamours all grow still察Until
the portals close again察and leave us toiling on in pain。
Complain not that the way is longwhat road is weary that leads there拭
But let the Angel take thy hand察and lead thee up the misty stair察And then
with beating heart await察the opening of the Golden Gate。

VERSE此 PHANTOMS
Back察 ye Phantoms of the Past察 In your dreary caves remain此 What
have I to do with memories Of a long´forgotten pain拭
For my Present is all peaceful察And my Future nobly planned此 Long
ago Time's mighty billows Swept your footsteps from the sand。
Back into your caves察 nor haunt me With your voices full of woe察 I
have buried grief and sorrow In the depths of Long´ago。
See the glorious clouds of morning Roll away察 and clear and bright
Shine the rays of cloudless daylight ´ Wherefore will ye moan of night拭
Never shall my heart be burthened With its ancient woe and fears察 I
can drive them from my presence察I can check these foolish tears。
Back察ye Phantoms察leave察oh leave me To a new and happy lot察Speak
no more of things departed察Leave mefor I know ye not。
Can it be that 'mid my gladness I must ever hear you wail察Of the grief
that wrung my spirit察And that made my cheek so pale拭
Joy is mine察but your sad voices Murmur ever in mine ear此Vain is all
the Future's promise察While the dreary Past is here。
Vain察oh worse than vain察the Visions That my heart察my life would fill察
If the Past's relentless phantoms Call upon me still

VERSE此 THANKFULNESS
My God察I thank Thee who hast made The Earth so bright察So full of
splendour and of joy察Beauty and light察So many glorious things are here察
Noble and right
I thank Thee察too察that Thou hast made Joy to abound察So many gentle
thoughts and deeds Circling us round察 That in the darkest spot of Earth
Some love is found。
I thank Thee MORE that all our joy Is touched with pain察 That
shadows fall on brightest hours察That thorns remain察So that Earth's bliss
may be our guide察And not our chain。
For Thou who knowest察Lord察how soon Our weak heart clings察Hast
given us joys察tender and true察Yet all with wings察So that we see察gleaming
on high察Diviner things
I thank Thee察 Lord察 that Thou hast kept The best in store察 We have
enough察yet not too much To long for more此A yearning for a deeper peace察
Not known before。
I thank Thee察Lord察that here our souls察Though amply blest察Can never
find察although they seek察A perfect rest ´ Nor ever shall察until they lean On
Jesus' breast

VERSE此 HOME´SICKNESS
Where I am察the halls are gilded察Stored with pictures bright and rare察
Strains of deep melodious music Float upon the perfumed air此 Nothing
stirs the dreary silence Save the melancholy sea察 Near the poor and
humble cottage察Where I fain would be
Where I am察 the sun is shining察And the purple windows glow察 Till
their rich armorial shadows Stain the marble floor below此 Faded Autumn
leaves are trembling察 On the withered jasmine tree察 Creeping round the
little casement察Where I fain would be
Where I am察the days are passing O'er a pathway strewn with flowers察
Song and joy and starry pleasures Crown the happy smiling hours此
