Song and joy and starry pleasures Crown the happy smiling hours此
Slowly察heavily察and sadly察Time with weary wings must flee察Marked by
pain察and toil察and sorrow察Where I fain would be
Where I am察the great and noble Tell me of renown and fame察And the
red wine sparkles highest察To do honour to my name此 Far away a place is
vacant察By a humble hearth察for me察Dying embers dimly show it察Where I
fain would be
Where I am察are glorious dreaminess察Science察genius察art divine察And
the great minds whom all honour Interchange their thoughts with mine此 A
few simple hearts are waiting察Longing察wearying察for me察Far away where
tears are falling察Where I fain would be
Where I am察all think me happy察For so well I play my part察None can
guess察who smile around me察How far distant is my heart ´ Far away察in a
poor cottage察Listening to the dreary sea察Where the treasures of my life
are察Where I fain would be

VERSE此 WISHES
All the fluttering wishes Caged within thy heart Beat their wings
against it察 Longing to depart察 Till they shake their prison With their
wounded cry察Open wide thy heart to´day察And let the captives fly。
Let them first fly upward Through the starry air察Till you almost lose
them察 For their home is there察 Then察 with outspread pinions察 Circling
round and round察Wing their way察wherever Want and woe are found。
Where the weary stitcher Toils for daily bread察 Where the lonely
watcher Watches by her dead察Where with thin weak fingers察Toiling at the
loom察Stand the little children察Blighted ere they bloom。
Where察 by darkness blinded察 Groping for the light察 With distorted
conscience Men do wrong for right察 Where察 in the cold shadow察 By
smooth pleasure thrown察Human hearts by hundreds Harden into stone。
Where on dusty highways察With faint heart and slow察Cursing the glad
sunlight察Hungry outcasts go此Where all mirth is silenced察And the hearth
is chill察For one place is empty察And one voice is still。
Some hearts will be lighter While your captives roam For their tender
singing察Then recal them home察When the sunny hours Into night depart察
Softly they will nestle In a quiet heart。

VERSE此 THE PEACE OF GOD
We ask for Peace察oh Lord Thy children ask Thy Peace察Not what the
world calls rest察That toil and care should cease察That through bright sunny
hours Calm Life should fleet away察 And tranquil night should fade In
smiling day察 It is not for such Peace that we would pray。
We ask for Peace察oh Lord Yet not to stand secure察Girt round with
iron Pride察Contented to endure此Crushing the gentle strings That human
hearts should know察Untouched by others' joy Or others' woe察 Thou察oh
dear Lord察wilt never teach us so。
We ask Thy Peace察oh Lord Through storm察and fear察and strife察To
light and guide us on察Through a long struggling life此While no success or
gain Shall cheer the desperate fight察Or nerve察what the world calls察Our
wasted might此 Yet pressing through the darkness to the light。
It is Thine own察oh Lord察Who toil while others sleep察Who sow with
loving care What other hands shall reap此They lean on Thee entranced察In
calm and perfect rest此Give us that Peace察oh Lord察Divine and blest察Thou
keepest for those hearts who love Thee best。

VERSE此 LIFE IN DEATH AND
DEATH IN LIFE
I。
If the dread day that calls thee hence察 Through a red mist of fear
should loom察。Closing in deadliest night and gloom Long hours of aching
dumb suspense撮 And leave me to my lonely doom。
I think察 beloved察 I could see In thy dear eyes the loving light Glaze
into vacancy and night察And still say察 God is good to me察And all that He
decrees is right。;
That察 watching thy slow struggling breath察 And answering each
imperfect sign察I still could pray thy prayer and mine察And tell thee察dear察
though this was death察That God was love察and love divine。
Could hold thee in my arms察and lay Upon my heart thy weary head察
And meet thy last smile ere it fled察 Then hear察 as in a dream察 one say察
;Now all is overshe is dead。;
Could smooth thy garments with fond care察And cross thy hands upon
thy breast察And kiss thine eyelids down to rest察And yet say no word of
despair察But察through my sobbing察 It is best。;
Could stifle down the gnawing pain察And say察 We still divide our life察
She has the rest察and I the strife察And mine the loss察and hers the gain此My
ill with bliss for her is rife。;
Then turn察and the old duties take ´ Alone nowyet with earnest will
Gathering sweet sacred traces still To help me on察and察for thy sake察My
heart and life and soul to fill。
I think I could check vain weak tears察And toilalthough the world's
great space Held nothing but one vacant place察And see the dark and weary
years Lit only by a vanished grace。
And sometimes察when the day was o'er察Call up the tender past again此
Its painful joy察its happy pain察And live it over yet once more察And say察

;But few more years remain。;
And then察when I had striven my best察And all around would smiling
say察 See how Time makes all grief decay察─Would lie down thankfully to
rest察And seek thee in eternal day。
II。
But if the day should ever rise ´ It could not and it cannot be ´ Yet察if
the sun should ever see察Looking upon us from his skies察A day that took
thy heart from me察
If loving thee still more and more察And still so willing to be blind察I
should the bitter knowledge find察That Time had eaten out the core Of love察
and left the empty rind察
If the poor lifeless words察 at last察 。The soul gone察 that was once so
sweet撮 Should cease my eager heart to cheat察And crumble back into the
past察And show the whole a vain deceit察
If I should see thee turn away察And know that prayer察 and time察 and
pain察Could no more thy lost love regain察Than bid the hours of dying day
Gleam in their mid´day noon again察
If I should loose thy hand察and know That henceforth we must dwell
apart察Since I had seen thy love depart察And only count the hours flow By
the dull throbbing of my heart察
If I should gaze and gaze in vain Into thine eyes so deep and clear察And
read the truth of all my fear Half mixed with pity for my pain察And sorrow
for the vanished year察
If not to grieve thee overmuch察 I strove to counterfeit disdain察 And
weave me a new life again察Which thy life could not mar察or touch察And so
smile down my bitter pain察
The ghost of my dead Past would rise And mock me察and I could not
dare Look to a future of despair察Or even to the eternal skies察For I should
still be
