great man helped the poor察 And the poor man loved the great此Then
lands were fairly portioned察 Then spoils were fairly sold此 The
Romans were like brothers In the brave days of old。
XXXIII
Now Roman is to Roman More hateful than a foe察 And the
Tribunes beard the high察 And the Fathers grind the low。 As we wax
hot in faction察 In battle we wax cold此Wherefore men fight not as
they fought In the brave days of old。
XXXIV
Now while the Three were tightening Their harness on their
backs察The Consul was the foremost man To take in hand an axe此
And Fathers mixed with Commons Seized hatchet察 bar察 and crow察
And smote upon the planks above察 And loosed the props below。

XXXV
Meanwhile the Tuscan army察 Right glorious to behold察 Come
flashing back the noonday light察 Rank behind rank察 like surges bright
Of a broad sea of gold。 Four hundred trumpets sounded A peal of
warlike glee察As that great host察with measured tread察And spears advanced察
and ensigns spread察Rolled slowly towards the bridge's head察 Where
stood the dauntless Three。
XXXVI
The Three stood calm and silent察 And looked upon the foes察
And a great shout of laughter From all the vanguard rose此And forth
three chiefs came spurring Before that deep array察 To earth they
sprang察 their swords they drew察 And lifted high their shields察 and flew
To win the narrrow way察
XXXVII
Aunus from green Tifernum察 Lord of the Hill of Vines察 And
Seius察 whose eight hundred slaves Sicken in Ilva's mines察 And
Picus察long to Clusium Vassal in peace and war察Who led to fight
his Umbrian powers From that gray crag where察 girt with towers察 The
fortress of Nequinum lowers O'er the pale waves of Nar。
XXXVIII
Stout Lartius hurled down Aunus Into the stream beneath察
Herminius struck at Seius察 And clove him to the teeth察 At Picus
brave Horatius Darted one fiery thrust察And the proud Umbrian's
gilded arms Clashed in the bloody dust。

XXXIX
Then Ocnus of Falerii Rushed on the Roman Three察 And
Lausulus of Urgo察 The rover of the sea察And Aruns of Volsinium察
Who slew the great wild boar察The great wild boar that had his den Amidst
the reeds of Cosa's fen察 And wasted fields察 and slaughtered men察
Along Albinia's shore。
XL
Herminius smote down Aruns此 Lartius laid Ocnus low此Right to
the heart of Lausulus Horatius sent a blow。 ``Lie there'' he cried察
``fell pirate No more察 aghast and pale察 From Ostia's walls the
crowd shall mark The track of thy destroying bark。 No more Campania's
hinds shall fly To woods and caverns when they spy Thy thrice
accursed sail。''
XLI
But now no sound of laughter Was heard among the foes。 A
wild and wrathful clamor From all the vanguard rose。 Six spears'
lengths from the entrance Halted that deep array察And for a space no
man came forth To win the narrow way。
XLII
But hark the cry is Astur此 And lo the ranks divide察And the
great Lord of Luna Comes with his stately stride。 Upon his ample
shoulders Clangs loud the four´fold shield察 And in his hand he
shakes the brand Which none but he can wield。
XLIII
He smiled on those bold Romans A smile serene and high察He

eyed the flinching Tuscans察 And scorn was in his eye。 Quoth he察
``The she´wolf's litter Stand savagely at bay此 But will ye dare to
follow察 If Astur clears the way''
XLIV
Then察whirling up his broadsword With both hands to the height察
He rushed against Horatius察 And smote with all his might。 With
shield and blade Horatius Right deftly turned the blow。 The blow察
though turned察came yet too nigh察It missed his helm察but gashed his thigh此
The Tuscans raised a joyful cry To see the red blood flow。
XLV
He reeled察 and on Herminius He leaned one breathing´space察
Then察like a wild cat mad with wounds察 Sprang right at Astur's face。
Through teeth察and skull察and helmet So fierce a thrust he sped察The
good sword stood a hand´breadth out Behind the Tuscan's head。
XLVI
And the great Lord of Luna Fell at that deadly stroke察As falls
on Mount Alvernus A thunder smitten oak此 Far o'er the crashing
forest The giant arms lie spread察And the pale augurs察 muttering
low察 Gaze on the blasted head。
XLVII
On Astur's throat Horatius Right firmly pressed his heel察And
thrice and four times tugged amain察 Ere he wrenched out the steel。
``And see'' he cried察 `the welcome察 Fair guests察that waits you here
What noble Lucomo comes next To taste our Roman cheer''
XLVIII
But at his haughty challange A sullen murmur ran察Mingled of
wrath察 and shame察 and dread察 Along that glittering van。 There
lacked not men of prowess察 Nor men of lordly race察For all Etruria's

noblest Were round the fatal place。
XLIX
But all Etruria's noblest Felt their hearts sink to see On the earth
the bloody corpses察 In the path the dauntless Three此And察from the
ghastly entrance Where those bold Romans stood察All shrank察like
boys who unaware察Ranging the woods to start a hare察Come to the mouth
of the dark lair Where察growling low察a fierce old bear Lies amidst
bones and blood。
L
Was none who would be foremost To lead such dire attack察But
those behind cried察 `Forward'' And those before cried察 `Back''
And backward now and forward Wavers th
