fierce career�察�Battlement�察�and plank�察�and pier�察                �Rushed headlong to 

the sea。

    Alone stood brave Horatius�察               �But constant still in mind�察�Thrice 

thirty   thousand   foes   before�察        �And   the   broad   flood   behind。   ``Down

the noble river           That rolls by the towers of Rome。

     ``Oh�察   �Tiber�   �Father   Tiber�          �To    whom     the  Romans     pray�察  �A 

Roman's life�察�a Roman's arms�察               �Take thou in charge this day��'' So he 

spake�察�and speaking sheathed               The good sword by his side�察�And with 

his harness on his back�察           �Plunged headlong in the tide。

    No   sound   of   joy   or   sorrow        Was   heard   from   either   bank�察  �But 

friends   and   foes   in   dumb   surprise�察  �With   parted   lips   and   straining   eyes�察�

Stood gazing where he sank�察�And when above the surges�察                      �They saw 

his crest appear�察�All Rome sent forth a rapturous cry�察�And even the ranks 

of Tuscany            Could scarce forbear to cheer。

     But   fiercely   ran   the   current�察     �Swollen   high   by   months   of   rain�此�

And   fast   his   blood   was   flowing�察        �And   he   was   sore   in   pain�察  �And 

heavy with his armor�察            �And spent with changing blows�此�And oft they 

thought him sinking�察            �But still again he rose。

    Never�察  �I   ween�察  �did   swimmer�察          �In   such   an   evil   case�察  �Struggle 

through such a raging flood              Safe to the landing place�此�But his limbs
