Yet may it chance察O Son of Kunti that a governed mind Shall some time

feel the sense´storms sweep察 and wrest Strong self´control by the roots。
Let him regain His kingdom let him conquer this察and sit On Me intent。
That man alone is wise Who keeps the mastery of himself If one Ponders
on objects of the sense察 there springs Attraction察 from attraction grows
desire察Desire flames to fierce passion察passion breeds Recklessness察then
the memoryall betrayed Lets noble purpose go察and saps the mind察Till
purpose察mind察and man are all undone。 But察if one deals with objects of
the sense Not loving and not hating察 making them Serve his free soul察
which rests serenely lord察Lo such a man comes to tranquillity察And out of
that tranquillity shall rise The end and healing of his earthly pains察Since
the will governed sets the soul at peace。 The soul of the ungoverned is not
his察Nor hath he knowledge of himself察which lacked察How grows serenity拭
and察wanting that察Whence shall he hope for happiness拭
The mind That gives itself to follow shows of sense Seeth its helm of
wisdom rent away察 And察 like a ship in waves of whirlwind察 drives To
wreck and death。 Only with him察 great Prince Whose senses are not
swayed by things of sense Only with him who holds his mastery察Shows
wisdom perfect。 What is midnight´gloom To unenlightened souls shines
wakeful day To his clear gaze察what seems as wakeful day Is known for
night察thick night of ignorance察To his true´seeing eyes。 Such is the Saint
And like the ocean察day by day receiving Floods from all lands察
which never overflows Its boundary´line not leaping察 and not leaving察
Fed by the rivers察but unswelled by those察
So is the perfect one to his soul's ocean The world of sense
pours streams of witchery察 They leave him as they find察 without
commotion察 Taking their tribute察but remaining sea。
Yea whoso察shaking off the yoke of flesh Lives lord察not servant察of
his lusts察 set free From pride察 from passion察 from the sin of ;Self察─
Toucheth tranquillity O Pritha's Son That is the state of Brahm There
rests no dread When that last step is reached Live where he will察 Die
when he may察such passeth from all 'plaining察To blest Nirvana察with the
Gods察attaining。

CHAPTER III
Arjuna。 Thou whom all mortals praise察Janardana If meditation be a
nobler thing Than action察wherefore察then察great Kesava Dost thou impel
me to this dreadful fight拭Now am I by thy doubtful speech disturbed Tell
me one thing察and tell me certainly察By what road shall I find the better
end拭
Krishna。 I told thee察blameless Lord there be two paths Shown to this
world察two schools of wisdom。
First The Sankhya's察 which doth save in way of works
PrescribedFN#4А by reason察 next察 the Yog察 which bids Attain by
meditation察spiritually此Yet these are one No man shall 'scape from act By
shunning action察nay察and none shall come By mere renouncements unto
perfectness。 Nay察and no jot of time察at any time察Rests any actionless察his
nature's law Compels him察even unwilling察into act察。For thought is act in
fancyА He who sits Suppressing all the instruments of flesh察Yet in his idle
heart thinking on them察Plays the inept and guilty hypocrite此But he who察
with strong body serving mind察 Gives up his mortal powers to worthy
work察 Not seeking gain察 Arjuna such an one Is honourable。 Do thine
allotted task Work is more excellent than idleness察 The body's life
proceeds not察 lacking work。 There is a task of holiness to do察 Unlike
world´binding toil察which bindeth not The faithful soul察such earthly duty
do Free from desire察and thou shalt well perform Thy heavenly purpose。
Spake Prajapati In the beginning察when all men were made察And察 with
mankind察the sacrifice ;Do this Work sacrifice Increase and multiply
With sacrifice This shall be Kamaduk察Your 'Cow of Plenty' giving back
her milk Of all abundance。 Worship the gods thereby察The gods shall yield
thee grace。 Those meats ye crave The gods will grant to Labour察when it
pays Tithes in the altar´flame。 But if one eats Fruits of the earth察rendering
to kindly Heaven No gift of toil察that thief steals from his world。;
Who eat of food after their sacrifice Are quit of fault察 but they that
spread a feast All for themselves察 eat sin and drink of sin。 By food the
living live察food comes of rain察And rain comes by the pious sacrifice察And
sacrifice is paid with tithes of toil察Thus action is of Brahma察who is One察

The Only察All´pervading察at all times Present in sacrifice。 He that abstains
To help the rolling wheels of this great world察Glutting his idle sense察lives
a lost life察 Shameful and vain。 Existing for himself察 Self´concentrated察
serving self alone察 No part hath he in aught察 nothing achieved察 Nought
wrought or unwrought toucheth him察 no hope Of help for all the living
things of earth Depends from him。FN#5АTherefore察thy task prescribed
With spirit unattached gladly perform察Since in performance of plain duty
man Mounts to his highest bliss。 By works alone Janak and ancient saints
reached blessedness Moreover察for the upholding of thy kind察Action thou
should'st embrace。 What the wise choose The unwise people take察 what
best men do The multitude will follow。 Look on me察Thou Son of Pritha
in the three wide worlds I am not bound to any toil察no height Awaits to
scale察no gift remains to gain察Yet I act here and察if I acted not Earnest
and watchfulthose that look to me For guidance察 sinking back to sloth
again Because I slumbered察would decline from good察And I should break
earth's order and commit Her offspring unto ruin察 Bharata Even as the
unknowing toil察wedded to sense察So let the enlightened toil察sense´freed察
but set To bring the world deliverance察and its bliss察Not sowing in those
simple察busy hearts Seed of despair。 Yea let each play his part In all he
finds to do察 with unyoked soul。 All things are everywhere by Nature
wrought In interaction of the qualities。 The fool察cheated by self察thinks察
;This I did; And ;That I wrought察 butah察thou strong´armed Prince A
better´lessoned mind察knowing the play Of visible things within the world
of sense察And how the qualities must qualify察Standeth aloof even from his
acts。 Th' untaught Live mixed with them察knowing not Nature's way察 Of
highest aims unwitting察 slow and dull。 Those make thou not to stumble察
having the light察 But all thy dues discharging察 for My sake察 With
meditation centred inwardly察Seeking no profit察satisfied察serene察Heedless
of issuefight They who shall keep My
